Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Buds 3 series could be ditching swipe gestures in favour of a more intuitive pinch control system.
This comes according to information uncovered by Android Authority through an APK teardown in partnership with AssembleDebug,
Pinch sensors that were spotted when browsing through the 5.0.00.11 version of the Samsung Members application.
This also includes images of the earbuds and gestures about them.
Although it is not clear yet whether the pinch sensors and gestures will be on both the Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro models or just one variant, the discovery indicates a radical change in user interaction for Samsung’s wireless earbuds.
The pinch gestures have been integrated into the earbuds of several prominent brands like Apple, Xiaomi, and Nothing among others.
In most of these models, one can perform a single-finger pinch to pause or play, perform two pinches to skip to the next in line, and triple pinch to go back.
Another essential action is the pinching-and-hold action, which toggles between noise cancellation and transparency modes.
According to Rita El-Khoury of Android Authority, pinch gestures can offer a superior user experience over touch or swipe controls.
Pinch and squeeze gestures are more deliberate actions in and of themselves, which greatly reduce the risk of accidental activations caused by hair or adjustments to the earbuds’ positioning.
While the specifics of how Samsung will implement pinch gestures remain unknown, it is reasonable to expect a similar approach to industry standards.
Users could potentially control media playback, volume, and noise cancellation/transparency modes through intuitive pinch combinations.
The leaked images also reveal a more conventional earbud design for the Galaxy Buds 3 series, featuring a stem.
Interestingly, the earbuds appear to have red or blue lights at the root of the stem, potentially aligning with the recently leaked “blade lights” feature for the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro.
