Samsung Account Mandatory for Galaxy Store Access Starting September 25

Highlights

  • Samsung now will require users to sign in with a Samsung account to access the Galaxy Store.
  • This will be applicable starting September 25.
  • Samsung account will be mandatory for both downloading and updating apps.
  • This change affects Galaxy Store-exclusive updates
  • It won’t impact apps downloaded from the Google Play Store.

While most users worldwide use the Google Play Store for app downloads and updates, the Samsung Galaxy Store also has its fair share of users. If you are one of those Samsung phone users and have been using Galaxy Story, this news update is for you.

Samsung will soon require users to sign in with a Samsung account to access the Galaxy Store.

According to multiple media reports, the change will take effect starting September 25 and was announced in the latest Galaxy Store update (v6.6.13.10).

Many users on X (previously Twitter) shared a new notice published by Samsung displaying the requirement of a Samsung Account logged in to use the Galaxy Store.

While the source of this notice cannot be confirmed, it be being circulating across social media and tech forums.

Samsung users previously could download and update apps, including automatic updates, without a Samsung account or signing in.

However, in a couple of weeks, all Galaxy Store activities, from browsing to updating apps, will require a Samsung account.

While users will always have the option to get their apps and updates from the Google Play Store, several Samsung apps and features receive updates exclusively through the Galaxy Store.

This means a Samsung account will eventually be necessary for Samsung users if they want to download or update the Galaxy Store-exclusive apps.

Though the update is not showing up for all users yet, it signals Samsung’s ongoing push for Galaxy users to create and sign in with a Samsung account.

As seen in recent years, the South Korean tech company has been frequently encouraging users to move towards the Samsung ecosystem and having a Samsung account is the first step.

It is important to note that this change will not impact apps downloaded through the Google Play Store.
