Google recently announced key product updates at the tenth edition of the Google for India event highlighting the company’s commitment and plans for the country. The theme of the event was ‘AI for Every Indian’. It showcased the latest in AI innovation with Google India MD Roma Chobey’s opening keynote.

Roma Datta Chobey kicked off the tenth edition of Google for India 2024 and said, “Remember those days, when booking a train ticket meant hours in line or paying bills was a day-long task? In the past 20 years, India has surged forward with Google in step. India’s digital revolution is rewriting the rules with the world’s lowest data cost, video is the gateway, UPI has revolutionised payments, and orders are being delivered in under ten minutes.”

According to Budaraju, “This can be a game changer for teachers, entrepreneurs, artists, and everyone, as we are making it even more accessible with the power of your voice, as over 40 per cent of Gemini Indian language users are already using the voice feature.”
“Gemini is constantly learning and growing, and our Gemini models are also helping us reimagine Google Search for you. It’s helping us unlock entirely new types of questions and transforming the way information is organised in search to make sense of what’s out there,” Budaraju said.

Sugandh Saxena, CEO, Fintech Association for Consumer Empowerment: “Giving people safe platforms to access digital financial services rests on several pillars. Our work tells us that fraudsters are misusing open web links to distribute malicious apps to harm customers in various ways. Google’s enhanced fraud protection pilot will be a vital toolkit to plug a critical gap in protecting customers from financial crimes. We believe this initiative will help combat such frauds and we look forward to contributing to the program.”

Manish Agrawal, Senior Executive Vice President & Head – Credit Intelligence & Control, HDFC Bank Limited: “Rapid digitisation of financial transactions in India over the past few years has spelled convenience to millions of people. It also requires consumers to be vigilant against cyber fraudsters. HDFC Bank is committed to educating about safe digital banking practices with multiple initiatives through the year. Google’s new pilot, Google Play Protect Enhanced Fraud Protection, is another step towards user security and app protection. The new feature proposes to protect the user against harmful apps and malware being downloaded onto their device. In the ongoing fight against digital frauds, concerted efforts by all stakeholders are the key to make a safe digital banking environment for all.”

“Technology and AI is going to be the biggest binder of the unification of India and to bridge the gaps of diversities. With data-driven decision-making, it will bring about revolutionary change to India’s future,” said Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat during the event.

“Our objective is to make the promise of AI real for every Indian, illustrating the many ways it can supercharge our collective potential. AI can galvanize the ways in which every citizen can become as unlimited as their imagination, revolutionize critical areas like healthcare and agriculture, and help transform India’s demographic advantage into a true demographic dividend,” Google mentioned in a blog.

iPhone 16 Pro Max Production Cost Estimate (BOM) Revealed

0

Highlights

  • The estimated BOM for the iPhone 16 Pro Max is $485.
  • It is slightly higher than the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s $453.
  • BOM excludes other significant expenses such as research, development, marketing, and distribution.

The first cost estimate for manufacturing the iPhone 16 Pro Max has surfaced online after the teardown video.

In industry terms, it is also known as the Bill of Materials (BOM). Before we explore the iPhone Pro Max cost sheet released by research firm TD Cowen, it is important to note a few details.

First of all, this estimated cost of manufacturing only reflects the direct costs of production. It does not include various other significant expenses such as research, development, marketing, and distribution.

Tim Cook has famously said that BOM estimates don’t accurately capture the actual expenses as the real cost of production is much higher.

However, BOM analyses provide an interesting insight.  It also gives an idea of how hardware upgrades contribute to price changes.

image

According to research firm TD Cowen, the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s production cost is estimated at $485. This is only slightly higher when compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s BOM of $453.

It is interesting to note that even with a larger 6.9-inch display, a bigger battery, a new Camera Control button and the faster Apple A18 Pro processor in iPhone 16 Pro Max, the overall production cost hasn’t risen too much.

The TD Cowen report reveals that the most expensive components are the larger display and the Tetraprism camera system. These also have seen a small price increase.

Moreover, the new LPDDR5X memory technology, storage, and chipset are also expensive when compared to the cost of these same components in the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The new pressure-sensitive Camera Control button is not a major cost factor. It adds only $19 to the total BOM.

This also means that Apple’s gross margin on the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which is also its latest flagship device, remains substantial. We can conclude that Apple earns a 60% gross margin on its flagship.

FAQs

Q1. What is the estimated cost of manufacturing the iPhone 16 Pro Max?

Survey: Android Users Upgrade Their Phones More Frequently Than iPhone Users

0

Highlights

  • A CIRP survey reveals that 57% of Android users upgrade their phones within two years.
  • Compared to this, only 34% of iPhone users upgrade their devices.

In the Android Vs iPhone battle, we now have another data point to debate about. A recent survey conducted by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) revealed Android users are quicker to upgrade their phones compared to iPhone users.

The CIRP survey covered the year ending in June 2024 and showed that around 57% of Android users replaced their last phone within two years as compared to only 34% of iPhone users doing the same.

On the other hand, iPhone users usually hold onto their phones for a longer period of time.

The survey found that 32% of iPhone users kept their previous phones for over three years. Compared to this, only 21% of Android users continue using their phones for that long a period.

image

One of the most obvious reasons for this could be the wide range of Android phones available at different price points in the market.

Moreover, the flooding of budget-friendly Android models in the smartphone market could also be a reason.

Most entry-level phones are not built to last and specs usually become outdated in a short span of time. This can often compel users to update their Android Devices faster, sometimes within three or fewer years.

Another factor contributing to Android users upgrading more frequently is affordability.

Low-cost Android phones make it easier for users to purchase a new device sooner.

Moreover, Android devices are produced by a wide range of manufacturers, who often provide different features. It gives Android users the option to switch brands to find phones with specific capabilities.

We have seen studies previously highlighted the fact that iPhones retain more value over time.

And if we compare the software updates available both both types of smartphones, the picture gets clearer.

Both Samsung and Google offer around seven years of Android system updates for their flagship models. Other Android phones available in the market often lose support earlier than that. In comparison, iPhones usually receive updates for longer.

The survey also reveals interesting insights for users who prefer buying second-hand phones. It is suggested that Android users are trading in many devices that are under two years old.

These phones often still have modern processors and features similar to current models. It makes these phones a good option for budget-conscious buyers.

In contrast, the second-hand market for iPhones isn’t that viable.

For example, Apple this year introduced its Apple Intelligence feature. To support this AI technology, iPhones need at least 8GB of RAM. This basically means that only newer models like the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will be able to run Apple Intelligence. That too when these iPhones roll out iOS 18.1.

This makes finding a second-hand iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max more challenging.

Also, second-hand iPhone prices could be high, which isn’t always convincing to pay when buying a used gadget.

However, the whole iPhone users upgrade less frequently theory may finally see a change. The new iPhone 16 model that supports Apple Intelligence is an attractive option to upgrade for anyone who wants to try Apple Intelligence.

FAQs

Q1. How often do Android users upgrade their phones compared to iPhone users?

Answer. According to a CIRP survey, 57% of Android users upgrade their phones within two years, whereas only 34% of iPhone users do the same.

Q2. Why do Android users upgrade their phones more frequently than iPhone users?

Answer. Android users often upgrade more frequently due to the wide range of affordable options available. Budget-friendly models with specs that become outdated quickly encourage more frequent upgrades.

Q3. What challenges exist in the second-hand market for iPhones?

Answer. The second-hand market for iPhones is less viable because newer models required for features like Apple Intelligence are hard to find and often priced high. This makes it difficult for buyers to find affordable, recent iPhone models.

Android 16’s Codename Leaks, Interesting Insights Revealed

0

Highlights

  • Android 16’s internal codename is rumoured to be “Baklava.”
  • It breaks Google’s tradition of alphabetical dessert names for updates.
  • This change is tied to Google’s trunk stable project.
  • The change in naming pattern suggests a shift in Google’s approach to Android development.

We are still waiting for Android 15 to complete release but it appears rumours and leaks about Android 16 have already started. The recent update gives a hint about the potential code name for Android 16. Here’s what we know so far.

According to a recent Android Authority report, Android 16’s internal codename will be “Baklava”.

If true, this will be breaking Google’s tradition of alphabetical dessert names for Android updates.

We may not have seen Google use dessert names for Android versions publicly, but the company continues to do so for its internal communication. Android 15, for example, is codenamed Vanilla Ice Cream.

Google followed this pattern in 2009 when Android 1.5 was launched with the codename Cupcake. This was followed by Donut for Android 1.6, Éclair for Android 2.0/2.1, Froyo for Android 2.2 and so on.  As per the sequence after Android 15 was codenamed Vanilla Ice Cream, the Android 16 codename should start with “W.” However, it appears Google now moving away from the alphabetical order with Android 16.

According to a tip from developer teamb58 as reported by Android Authority, some recent AOSP code changes indicate that Baklava is the internal codename for Android 16.

image

One change revealed that the min_sdk_version field for next year’s Android release was set to Baklava, while the field for Android 15 was set to Vanilla Ice Cream.

Another code change mentioned checking if the SDK codename matches Baklava during development.

During the early stages of Android development, Google typically uses the codename for the SDK version until the final SDK is released. For example, in Android 15 Beta 3, the name changed from Vanilla Ice Cream to Android 15 once the platform reached stability.

image

Similarly, Android 16’s early builds will show Baklava instead of the final SDK version 36.

The shift in naming is tied to Google’s trunk stable project. This has changed how the company develops Android. This project first impacted Android with the release of Android 14 QPR2. It features a new build ID naming scheme. Instead of starting with U for Upside Down Cake (Android 14’s codename), build IDs beginning with A. As a result, Android 15 QPR2 and Android 16’s build IDs will start with B, such as BP1A, following this new system.

image

Android 15’s codename Vanilla Ice Cream does not follow the alphabetical pattern that would have suggested a name starting with A. This is probably because Google had already decided on this name before the development process changed.

Many experts were expecting Android 16’s codename to start with W. However, recent leaks of “Baklava” to be the codename reflect a broader change in Android’s development structure.

Here’s a quick look at all Android version codenames over the years –

  • Android 1.0 – No codename
  • Android 1.1 – Petit Four
  • Android 1.5 – Cupcake
  • Android 1.6 – Donut
  • Android 2.0/2.1 – Éclair
  • Android 2.2 – Froyo
  • Android 2.3 – Gingerbread
  • Android 3.0 – Honeycomb
  • Android 4.0 – Ice Cream Sandwich
  • Android 4.1-4.3 – Jelly Bean
  • Android 4.4 – KitKat
  • Android 5.0/5.1 – Lollipop
  • Android 6.0 – Marshmallow
  • Android 7.0/7.1 – Nougat
  • Android 8.0/8.1 – Oreo
  • Android 9 – Pie
  • Android 10 – Quince Tart
  • Android 11 – Red Velvet Cake
  • Android 12/12L – Snow Cone
  • Android 13 – Tiramisu
  • Android 14 – Upside Down Cake
  • Android 15 – Vanilla Ice Cream
  • Android 16 – Baklava (as per leaks)

No matter what your personal opinion about Apple is, whether you are an Apple fan or would prefer to die on the ship with an Android in hand, you cannot deny that Apple has been pioneering in many ways. The Cupertino giant changed the smartphone industry forever when it introduced the iPhone without a physical keyboard.

And for those of you who aren’t aware, Apple has similar goals for its MacBooks as well.

A series of patents for many years have hinted at Apple’s ongoing work toward making an all-screen MacBook. Apple plans on replacing the traditional keyboards and trackpads with virtual ones.

While many tech enthusiasts often have cast doubts on whether this innovation will ever see the light of day, a new patent continuation published recently confirms that this ambitious project is still in development.

From Physical to Virtual Keys

It was back in 2007 when Apple launched the iPhone. At that time, Steve Jobs highlighted the benefits of a virtual keyboard. He explained how virtual buttons can be more customizable and can be changed based on the app in use.

Future updates can be used to add or remove buttons with ease. This small detail about flexibility has remained a core feature of Apple’s iPhones and iPads.

However, we have seen Apple move away from this core Steve Jobs idea. Since then, the brand has often acknowledged the importance of having physical keyboards in some situations.

For example, at times when you have to do extensive typing, it will be difficult to replace physical keyboards with anything.

Apple launched the Magic Keyboard for iPads as it recognised the importance of physical keys.

Apple once even experimented with soft keyboards on the MacBook side through the Touch Bar.

Meanwhile, we have seen physical buttons on Apple’s devices such as the Action Button or the recent Camera Control button on the iPhones.

Haptic Technology to Become A Substitute For Physical Keyboard

It is clear that Apple believes it can replicate the feel of real keys using haptic feedback.

This idea isn’t new. MacBook trackpads already use haptics to simulate a click. The sensation is incredibly realistic.

It appears Apple is hoping to achieve something similar with keyboards as well.

The challenges are definitely greater for keyboards. People rely on the tactile feel of keys while typing.  Moreover, the physical cushioning of keys makes typing more comfortable. Many tech experts have expressed doubts about whether a glass surface can yet replicate that experience.

Apple Patents All-Glass MacBooks

The company has been trying to replicate the comfort and sensation of a physical keyboard in an all-glass MacBook for years.

In 2018, Apple explained its approach to achieve this, “When pressed, the user’s finger may form a depression in the keyboard surface beneath the finger. The pixelated capacitive sense layer may detect the depth and/or location of the depression to determine both an amount and a location of a force.”

“The haptic actuators may induce a physical sensation that is similar to or representative of a mechanical key.”

“The electrostatic charge may cause an actual or perceived change in friction or surface roughness between an object (e.g., the user’s finger) and the input surface by electrostatically attracting the user’s finger to the surface.”

Over the years, Apple has filed multiple patents exploring ways to solve this problem.

The latest patent papers, as per a recent 9to5Mac report, show that the company is still actively working on it. However, the recent papers don’t show any groundbreaking new concepts. So, it looks like we will have to wait for a few years before we see an all-screen MacBook.

We recently reported on iFixit’s teardowns of the iPhone 16 and now the repair engineers have completed teardowns of Apple’s latest AirPods 4 and updated AirPods Max. It appears Apple has not moved away from the tried and tested engineering.

The teardowns reveal very few internal changes, especially when it comes to repairability. Here’s everything that iFixit’s latest videos reveal.

Firstly, you can watch iFixit’s full teardown video here –

iFixit Teardown of AirPods 4

iFixit

iFixit’s findings reveal they are quite similar to the AirPods 3 in terms of internal design.

No changes from the previous design also means these new AirPods are just as difficult to repair as they were previously. The new AirPods earned the lowest possible repair score of 0/10.

A major limitation is the inability to easily replace the battery in the AirPods case. This lack of repairability in design makes Apple’s design look outdated when we compare it to other earbuds available today.

iFixit

Other competing brands in the market such as Samsung and Sony have already addressed this of repairability in their products.

The teardown also focused on the AirPods 4 without active noise cancellation. A noticeable difference between this model and previous versions is the addition of “a single outward-facing microphone.”

iFixit Teardown of AirPods Max

The teardown of the new AirPods shows it is still not repairable by end users, while the AirPods Max with USB-C are almost the same as the Lightning version it replaced.

The updated AirPods Max teardown also shows almost no internal changes.

This was almost evident from the launch since the only update in the new model is the switch from Apple’s Lightning port to a USB-C charging port.

iFixit Shares AirPods 4 and USB-C AirPods Max Teardown Video

Other than that, AirPods Max is pretty much the same device. It still lacks Apple’s latest AirPods features. Fans have already expressed disappointment over this lack of innovation.

iFixit teardown video concludes:

“So here we are again, another year and another AirPod teardown that totally disappoints on the repairability front. And it’s a shame too, because Apple has made a functionally amazing piece of hardware that brings some real quality-of-life improvements, but at the expense of creating a device that’s totally disposable.

The AirPods Max, however, remains unchanged from the 2020 release model. We still don’t have parts or manuals for these $500 headphones, and the entry process into the cups is awkward at best.

With this in mind, the AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC receive a provisional score of 0 out of 10 on our repairability scale. And the AirPods Max USB-C version score remains unchanged at a provisional 6 out of 10.”

What we can conclude from the teardowns is that Apple’s new AirPods have seen minimal updates and remain difficult to repair.

FAQs

Q1. What changes in the AirPods 4 compared to the AirPods 3?

Answer. iFixit found that the AirPods 4 are quite similar to the AirPods 3 in terms of internal design. The main difference is the addition of a single outward-facing microphone. Unfortunately, they remain difficult to repair, with a repairability score of 0/10.

Q2. Did iFixit highlight any drawbacks in the new AirPods 4?

iPhone 16 series was launched with the new Camera Control Button as one of the main highlights. It gives quick access to the camera and camera settings. The button basically turns your iPhone into a handheld camera.

The Camera Control button follows the Action button, which debuted on the iPhone 15 Pro models last year. After the introduction of the Camera and Action button, all iPhone 16 models come equipped with both the Camera Control and Action buttons.

Many experts have already pointed out that the entire button system of iPhones will evolve eventually. It has been also speculated that how iPhone buttons look and work may also change in future. Now, recent rumours in the tech community are hinting that things will change as soon as the next iPhone.

The recent rumours suggest Apple is in the process of replacing the Action button and Volume Keys with a single button.

This might sound unusual at first to some of our readers. However, it aligns with previous reports about Apple experimenting with new button designs.

The recent rumour comes from a trusted leaker Majin Bu on X (previously Twitter), known for rightfully breaking many updates in the past. He had accurately predicted the display sizes for the Apple Watch Series 10 just before its release.

We know from previous reports that Apple is already working on the iPhone 17 series, which will include a slim iPhone 17 Air model.

If the recent rumours hold any air of truth, this new button design could be part of their plans as well.

It was also hinted that the unified button would function like the Camera Control button. It might include a sapphire crystal for touch detection and a force sensor to differentiate between taps or swipes. Users could mute the phone, adjust the volume, or trigger other actions, all with a single button.

Earlier reports suggested Apple considered merging the Volume and Action buttons during the iPhone 16’s development, under internal projects codenamed “Project Atlas” and “Project Bongo.”

While that plan clearly didn’t see the light of day, there is a slight chance that the Cupertino giant could even resurface that plan with the iPhone 17 Pro.

There’s even speculation that users might be able to customize button placement. The Camera Control and the rumoured Action-Volume button could be interchangeable. If true, this would help left-handed users and they would be able to position the buttons more conveniently.

The current rumours suggest some significant iPhone 17 Pro button design is on the cards. It will be interesting to see how things end up eventually. We can expect more leaks in the coming months.

FAQs

Q1. What new button features are introduced in the iPhone 16 series?

Answer. The iPhone 16 series features a new Camera Control button for quick access to camera functions, in addition to the existing Action button from the iPhone 15 Pro models.

Q2. What rumours are circulating about the button design in future iPhone models?

Answer. Rumours suggest that future iPhones might feature a single multifunction button replacing the Action button and Volume Keys, with possible customizable placement to aid left-handed users.
