Nothing Unveils Industry First Co-Created Smartphone Details?

Nothing today unveiled the final outcomes of The Community Edition Project.

The Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition is Nothing’s first co-created product, where some of its most talented followers worked directly with the Nothing Team.

From hardware to wallpapers, packaging to marketing, this smartphone has been entirely shaped by the imagination of Nothing’s community.

Nothing is pioneering a new way of working that seeks to erase the barrier between company and community. The project generated significant excitement, with over 900 entries from 47 countries around the world.

The Community Edition Project is Nothing’s first major pilot to co-create hardware, software, and content with its community, marking a key step towards shaping the future of the business together.

Winners Astrid Vanhuyse & Kenta Akasaki, Andrés Mateos, Ian Henry Simmonds, and Sonya Palma collaborated closely with Nothing’s Design Studio, Creative, Brand, and Marketing teams in London to further refine their winning concepts.

The result of this collaboration between the Nothing team and the community is Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition, a glow-in-the-dark interpretation of the popular Phone (2a) Plus.

Stage 1 – Hardware Design

Astrid Vanhuyse & Kenta Akasaki collaborated with Nothing’s Design Director Adam Bates and CMF Designer Lucy Birley, experimenting with a variety of materials and colours to bring their “Phosphorescence” concept to life, all while preserving the device’s core Nothing identity.

Using green-tinted phosphorescent material finishes, elements of the back of the phone emit a soft glow in dark environments. This feature is purely analogue, requiring no power source, and can last for hours before gradually fading until it recharges by daylight.

Stage 2 – Wallpaper Design

Building on the hardware design, Andrés Mateos used a mix of AI tools and digital design to create the “Connected Collection”.

Initially tasked with developing four wallpapers, Andrés, along with Nothing’s Software Design Director Mladen M Hoyss and Software Designer Ken Giang, decided to expand the final collection to six wallpapers.

Stage 3 – Packaging Design

Ian Henry Simmonds reinterpreted Nothing’s packaging design with his “Less is More” concept – a graphically bold, yet simple super-macro crop.

The final packaging includes reflective elements which glow in dark environments to complement the winning hardware design.

Stage 4 – Marketing Campaign

Sonya Palma brought all the elements together with her intimate and powerful campaign concept, “Find your light. Capture your light”.

This compelling campaign echoes Nothing’s very first product launch where “pure instinct” was at the campaign’s centre.

Both allude to the idea that we all have an inner power that deserves to be explored. Sonya worked with Nothing’s Creative Team to develop a suite of elevated assets, including a film campaign and digital assets that supported the launch of the product.

Rooted in Community

Co-creation is at the core of Nothing’s mission. While Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition is the Community Team’s largest project to date, Nothing is constantly working with community members to co-develop software and content. In 2022, Nothing also introduced the role of a Community Board Observer, an elected individual who represents the community at Nothing’s Board of Directors meetings.

Availability and Pricing

Community members will have priority access to purchase the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition, available at ₹29,999 for the 12+256GB variant on 12 November. Details on how to purchase this edition will be available on the Nothing community platform, where members can find all the information and register to receive a unique purchase link.

There are only 1,000 units being produced globally.

Additionally, an offline drop will be organised exclusively for community members, with further details to be shared soon through Nothing India’s social channels. To purchase the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition, being part of the Nothing community is essential.

The Community Edition Project phone is available across all markets and has been developed on Phone (2a) Plus 12+256 GB (except for Phone (2a) in Japan).

X To Speed Up Community Notes with ‘Lightning Notes’, Raises API Prices

0

Highlights

  • X is speeding up its Community Notes fact-checking system with Lightning Notes.
  • This will reduce the time for user-submitted notes to appear.
  • X announced higher prices for its API service.
  • Introduced discounted annual subscription options for developers.

Fact-checking is now an essential part of social media and X (earlier Twitter) community notes are one of the best examples of how platforms can effectively execute it.

While anyone who uses X will vouch for the fact that community notes are saving the platform in many ways, X too seems to understand the importance of this feature.

The platform is going to speed up community notes.

X is working to make its Community Notes fact-checking system faster with a new feature called Lightning Notes.

The platform announced it has redesigned the scoring system that drives Community Notes, so now user-submitted notes can appear less than 20 minutes after a post goes live.

Community Notes, which launched in 2022, lets users fact-check or add important context to posts. Contributors must provide sources, and others rate the “helpfulness” of these notes.

To discourage misinformation, creators are penalised if their posts receive Community Notes. Now, this entire process is designed to be much faster.

Lightning notes can go live in as little as 14 minutes and 33 seconds after they are written or just 18 minutes and 20 seconds after the original post.

This will take care of the common issue when fact-checks appear too late to counter viral misinformation.

A Bloomberg report earlier revealed that fact-checks on popular posts sometimes took hours to appear, reaching only a fraction of the original post’s viewers.

It remains unclear how frequently Lightning Notes will speed up the fact-checking process. X now has more than 800,000 fact-checking contributors worldwide, some posts may still take longer to go through Community Notes.

X Raises API Prices and Launches Annual Subscriptions

Meanwhile, in a separate move, X announced that it is increasing prices for its API service and introducing discounted annual subscription options.

The cost of the basic API tier has doubled from $100 to $200 and the Elon Musk app also plans to raise limits and add new endpoints for this tier, including reposts_of_me and communities search.

X shared the update on its developer community page, stating that the basic tier’s read limit will increase from 10,000 to 15,000.

image
Post on X’s developer community portal.

However, the API comparison page still shows the old limits, which could be an error.

X Developer’s account also mentioned an experimental read API for the free tier but didn’t highlight that free tier limits for posts have dropped from 1,500 to 500.

X has also introduced cheaper yearly plans for both the Basic and Pro tiers for developers interested in annual subscriptions.

The Basic annual plan now costs $2,100, while the Pro annual plan is priced at $54,000.

Xiaomi SU7 Ultra – Design and Aerodynamics

Xiaomi SU7 Ultra builds on the standard SU7 sedan’s design with a stronger focus on aerodynamics. It features sportier bumpers, a prominent 1.56-meter-wide rear spoiler and a broader body.

These changes, along with an active rear diffuser, give it a claimed downforce of 265 kilograms. The car also rides on 21-inch wheels fitted with Pirelli P Zero 5 tyres

This battery powers three electric motors, two V8s and one V6, that together produce 1,138 kW (1,526 hp) and a peak torque of 1,770 Nm.

This setup allows the SU7 Ultra to go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 1.98 seconds, hit 200 km/h in 5.86 seconds and reach a top speed of 350 km/h.

It also boasts a quarter-mile time of 9.23 seconds and includes an Asil-D torque vectoring system for enhanced handling.

Xiaomi SU7 Ultra – Braking System and Competition

For braking, Xiaomi has equipped the SU7 Ultra with the largest carbon ceramic brake discs ever on a production car.

The front discs measure 430 mm x 40 mm, while the rear discs are 410 mm x 32 mm. These brakes, paired with six-piston front and four-piston rear Akebono callipers, can withstand temperatures over 1,300°C and bring the car from 100 km/h to a stop in just 30.8 meters.

Though the SU7 Ultra prototype set a record lap time at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the production version might be slightly slower due to added weight.

The prototype had a lightweight carbon fibre body, giving it a curb weight of 1,900 kg.

At the I/O 2024 event earlier this year in May, Google introduced Project Astra hinting that it would come to Gemini Live later this year. Now at the recent Alphabet Q3 2024 earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai briefly shared some insights on both Project Astra and the Pixel 9.

Pichai explained that Google is “building out experiences where AI can see and reason about the world around you.”

He added, “We’re working to ship experiences like this as early as 2025.”

It’s uncertain if Gemini Live’s camera mode might be delayed until 2025 or if a limited version will launch this year with a broader release next year. Pichai’s mention of “experiences” hints that Astra might apply to more than one product, especially since it was demonstrated on both a phone and glasses.

Sundar Pichai says more than 25% of Google’s new code is generated by AI

Currently, Gemini Live is available for all users (both paid and free) but is limited to general information chats and does not yet integrate Gemini Extensions, Gmail or Google Calendar.

On the AI front, Pichai mentioned that Google teams are “actively working on performance improvements and new capabilities for our range of models.

He confirmed there have been “two generations of Gemini models” — likely Gemini 1.0 and 1.5 — and that Google is working on a “third generation, which is progressing well.” Rumour suggests that Gemini 2.0 will be unveiled in December.

Regarding Gemini’s integration across Google’s products, Pichai said, “…teams internally are now set up much better to consume the underlying model innovation and translate that into innovation within their products.”

Products such as Gmail, Android, Maps, Chrome, Play Store and YouTube have already rolled out initial versions with Gemini integration, with a robust roadmap ahead for 2025.

During the call, Pichai also noted that the Pixel 9 series has seen “strong demand.”

“At Made by Google, we unveiled our latest Pixel 9 series of devices, featuring advanced AI models, including Gemini Nano. We’ve seen strong demand for these devices, and they have already received multiple awards.”

The Q3 earnings call, covering July through September, included a few weeks of sales data for the Pixel 9 lineup, reflecting its early success.

Q2. What did Pichai mention about the Pixel 9 series in the earnings call?

Q3. What integrations is Gemini Live currently missing?

Answer. Currently, Gemini Live is available for all users (both paid and free) but is limited to general information chats and does not yet integrate Gemini Extensions, Gmail or Google Calendar.

We know Apple has been working on diversifying its supply chain beyond China for quite some time and this could be its latest move towards achieving that objective.

However, China’s importance in Apple’s supply chain isn’t diminishing any time soon. CEO Tim Cook has reportedly committed to continue raising Apple’s investment in China during a recent government exchange.

In its effort to reduce the dependence, the Cupertino giant has reportedly hit a milestone.

In a recent report by The Information, Wayne Ma writes, “For the first time, Apple is using an Indian factory to do the early manufacturing work for the base model of next year’s iPhone 17, according to two people with direct knowledge of the situation. The choice of an Indian factory for this stage of iPhone development—figuring out how to translate a prototype designed in Cupertino into a device that can be mass-produced—highlights the progress Apple has made in diversifying its supply chain to India from China and its confidence in the capabilities of Indian engineers.

That’s because this work is the most challenging and resource-intensive aspect of Apple’s product development, say current and former Apple employees. Internally known as New Production Introduction or NPI, the work involves tweaking the iPhone’s design and materials and experimenting with different types of equipment and manufacturing processes to ensure that millions of iPhones can be produced a day across different locations with minimal defects. The majority of this development typically takes place between October and May.”

As Ma mentions, this shift in early manufacturing strategy is only for the base iPhone 17 model.

Apple’s manufacturing partner Foxconn is conducting early development of the base iPhone 17 at a factory in Bengaluru, India, according to The Information’s Wayne Ma.

China will still be the key destination for early manufacturing and testing of high-end iPhone models including the iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and even the much-anticipated iPhone 17 Air.

Apple has been previously vocal about how hard it has been for the company to replicate China’s production expertise in other places where they have tried. In this regard, the current move of finding feet for the base model early manufacturing in a country like India is a significant development and can change tides in the future.

Assuming the plan for the iPhone 17 base works well in India, we can surely expect expansion in India’s role in Apple’s supply chain.
