The new online counter appears at the top of group chats displaying the number of members currently online. This is a slight upgrade from the stable version, which shows the names of some active group members and a typing indicator.

The counter only reflects users who have WhatsApp open on their devices and not those actively engaging with the group. It does not display the names of online members. Moreover, users who have disabled their ‘Online’ status for privacy reasons will not be included in the count.

This feature could be useful for timing messages in group chats such as sharing updates or starting conversations when most members are online.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp has also updated the typing indicator in group chats moving it to the bottom of the screen and just above the message typing box for a new look.

Apple is set to debut its in-house cellular modem in select Apple devices by 2025. After spending over five years developing the tech, many tech experts look at this advancement as a major milestone. However, early reports suggest the first-generation modem codenamed Sinope won’t be able to match the performance of Qualcomm’s chips currently used in iPhones just as yet.

Bloomberg’s Apple reporter Mark Gurman, in one of his recent reports, highlights that Apple modem is “not as advanced” as Qualcomm’s latest offerings.

Apple’s 2025 In-House Modem

Gurman writes, “Sinope [modem’s codename] isn’t as advanced as the latest modems from San Diego-based Qualcomm, meaning the first Apple modem is a downgrade from the component currently in the iPhone 16 Pro.”

image

“Unlike today’s high-end Qualcomm parts, the Sinope modem won’t support mmWave, a type of 5G technology used by Verizon Wireless and other carriers, primarily in major cities, that can theoretically handle download speeds of as much as 10 gigabits per second. Instead, the Apple component will rely on the Sub-6 standard, a more prevalent technology used by the current iPhone SE,” he further adds.

The first Apple 5G modem will reportedly debut in two iPhone models iPhone SE 4 in spring 2025 and the iPhone 17 Air in fall 2025.

Moreover, we may also get to see some low-end iPads feature the modem later in the year. The iPhone SE 4 will have a new design with an edge-to-edge screen and support for Apple Intelligence apart from the new modem.

Gurman, in his report, also shares some details of the first Apple model expected to be used in the 2025 Apple devices. He writes, “The first Apple modem will also only support four-carrier aggregation, a technology that combines bands from several wireless providers simultaneously to increase network capacity and speeds. Modems from Qualcomm can support six or more carriers at the same time. In lab tests, the first Apple modem caps out at download speeds of about 4 gigabits per second, less than the top speeds offered by non-mmWave Qualcomm modems.”

Apple In-House Modem – Future Upgrades in 2026 and 2027

However, Gurman also specifies that Apple has bigger plans for its modem technology.

  • 2026 Modem – Expected to be part of the iPhone 18 lineup and high-end iPads, it will feature significant advancements, including mmWave support, download speeds of up to 6Gbps and advanced carrier aggregation capabilities.
  • 2027 Modem – Apple aims to surpass Qualcomm with a third-generation modem featuring built-in satellite support and enhanced overall performance.

While the first-generation modem might not rival Qualcomm’s chips, it appears Apple has long-term plans in place. The Cupertino giant is riding on hopes that it delivers a modem that not only matches but potentially outperforms competitors by 2027.

 FAQs

Q1. When will Apple debut its first in-house 5G modem?

Answer. Apple is set to debut its first in-house 5G modem, codenamed Sinope, in select devices by 2025.

Q2. What are the limitations of Apple’s modem compared to Qualcomm’s modems?

Answer. The first Apple modem, Sinope, is not as advanced as Qualcomm’s latest offerings, lacking mmWave support and capping download speeds at about 4 Gbps with only four-carrier aggregation.

Q3. What advancements does Apple plan for its modem technology in the future?

Answer. Apple plans to introduce a modem in 2026 with mmWave support and download speeds up to 6 Gbps and by 2027, a modem with built-in satellite support and enhanced performance.

It has been widely reported earlier the Apple is advancing its ambitious plan to replace Qualcomm with its own modem technology in various Apple devices.  A more recent Bloomberg report now suggests that Apple’s multi-year roadmap for the same is ready and the company is all set to bring in-house modem chips to the iPhone and iPad.

Bloomberg, in a follow-up report, also revealed that Apple is also exploring cellular connectivity for Macs for the first time in the company’s history.

Here’s a quick recap of the recent Bloomberg report.

Cellular Connectivity for Macs by 2026

According to the report, Apple could introduce cellular connectivity to Macs as early as 2026. This will most likely powered by Apple’s second-generation modem. Cellular connectivity would allow Mac users to access the internet without relying on Wi-Fi.

“With its own modem in the pipeline, Apple is investigating the idea of bringing cellular connectivity to the Mac for the first time. That means users wouldn’t need Wi-Fi to get online. To date, that capability has been reserved for the iPhone, Apple Watch, and iPad,” Bloomberg stated.

However, this feature will only roll out after 2026 as Apple plans to introduce a more advanced modem by then, offering faster speeds and improved capabilities.

Apple is expected to transition to its custom cellular modem starting next year with three devices including iPhone SE 4, iPhone 17 Air and Base model iPad. Meanwhile, a higher-end version of the modem with faster 5G connectivity is expected to launch in 2025 with the iPhone 18 Pro.

Vision Pro and AR Glasses with Cellular Support

Bloomberg report also reveals that Apple is eyeing cellular support for its Vision Pro headset. The report notes, “The company is also discussing bringing cellular support to headsets, including future models of the Vision Pro. Someday, the technology may also be used in lightweight augmented reality glasses, though such a device is years away.”

These efforts suggest Apple’s broader goal of integrating its custom modem technology across its ecosystem to provide faster connectivity while also reducing reliance on external suppliers.

OnePlus Introduces Green Line Worry-Free Solution

0

Highlights

  • Advanced Display Technology, Rigorous Quality Control, and Extended Lifetime Warranty to Address AMOLED Display Concerns in the Industry.
  • OnePlus has partnered with industry leaders to develop an Enhanced Edge Bonding Layer using advanced PVX materials.

OnePlus today unveiled a comprehensive solution designed to directly address industry concerns regarding green lines on AMOLED displays found in smartphones in India.

This initiative, dubbed the “OnePlus Green Line Worry-Free Solution,” aims to reassure users through advanced display technology, stringent quality control, and an extended service policy of a lifetime warranty.

“OnePlus was the first brand across the industry to respond swiftly with technological solutions to mitigate display risks in the Indian market,” said Robin Liu, Chief Executive Officer of OnePlus India. “Not only are we accelerating technology upgrades in AMOLED displays, but we are also the first brand to offer a lifetime warranty for Indian users, showcasing our confidence in our technology and our user-first approach.”

The OnePlus Green Line Worry-Free Solution operates in three key areas to provide users with assurance in quality and, most importantly, peace of mind regarding their potential concerns.

Advanced Display Technology: Adding a Superior Protective Layer

Advanced Display Technology: Adding a Superior Protective Layer

OnePlus has made significant strides in display technology by partnering with industry leaders to tackle technical challenges, particularly those posed by environmental factors.

The standout advancement is the integration of the Enhanced Edge Bonding Layer, which utilizes superior PVX edge-sealing materials in all OnePlus AMOLED displays.

PVX is a high-performance material renowned for its exceptional resistance to weathering and chemicals, making it ideal for enhancing durability in extreme conditions.

By overcoming technical and craftsmanship challenges, the PVX layer acts as a barrier, significantly slowing moisture and oxygen penetration over time, thereby extending the lifespan of the display.

Since the introduction of this technology, all OnePlus AMOLED displays have incorporated this innovation, effectively minimizing the occurrence of green line issues to the lowest level in the industry, even in India’s extreme heat and humidity, while ensuring stable and high performance.

“We understand the unique climate challenges posed by prolonged high temperatures and humidity faced by Indian users, and we’ve worked diligently to ensure that OnePlus devices can meet those demands,” said Ramagopala Reddy P, Vice President at OnePlus India and former Director of the company’s Hyderabad R&D Center. “With the PVX Enhanced Edge Bonding Layer as a key component of our Green Line Worry-Free Solution, we are committed to delivering a superior display experience that stands the test of time.”

Rigorous Quality Control: Exceeding Industry Standards

Rigorous Quality Control: Exceeding Industry Standards

OnePlus’s commitment to quality is underscored by its rigorous quality control processes.

The OnePlus Quality Engineering Lab conducts over 180 comprehensive tests on all phones, simulating extreme real-world conditions to ensure reliability and durability.

These tests include electrical performance checks, structural assessments, and environmental aging evaluations.

A key test is the “Double 85” test, where displays are subjected to temperatures of 85°C and 85% humidity for extended periods, multiple times.

These extreme conditions help assess the durability and performance of the devices under stress.

Recognizing that the green line issue stems from a combination of factors rather than a single cause, OnePlus has diversified its scenario testing to ensure product reliability across various conditions, further mitigating the green line issue.

Lifetime Warranty: Extending Hassle-Free Commitment to All Devices

Demonstrating its dedication to an exceptional user experience, OnePlus is extending its lifetime warranty against the green line issue to all its smartphone models.

Whether users own an older model or are considering the latest releases, they can rest assured that their investment is protected from display issues.

This represents the strongest commitment in the market, unmatched by competitors primarily due to operational constraints.

“Last year, we took a bold step by being the first smartphone brand to offer a lifetime warranty for our older models to support affected users,” said Robin Liu, CEO of OnePlus India. “Building on that, we’re excited to extend this warranty to every OnePlus phone, reinforcing our belief in the quality and reliability of our products. More importantly, as a community-driven brand, we hope these measures provide users with a worry-free experience throughout the lifespan of their OnePlus devices.”

OnePlus’ Promise to Its Users

As OnePlus continues to innovate and improve, the brand’s commitment to delivering reliable, high-quality products remains steadfast.

The Green Line Worry-Free Solution embodies more than just technological advancements; it reflects the company’s dedication to user experience and consumer trust.

At every layer, the latest One UI protects personal data while providing all types of users with choice, transparency, and integrated security settings — because in the era of AI, there is no privacy without holistic security.

Knox Matrix Unlocks Ultimate Transparency

Knox Matrix is Samsung’s vision for the future, enhancing protection through multi-layered, intelligent threat monitoring between connected Samsung devices. One UI 7 sets the foundation for the next frontier of security.

  • Knox Matrix monitors devices through Trust Chain, a secure private blockchain — and the new Knox Matrix dashboard introduces an easier way to maintain transparent security across a connected device ecosystem. With One UI 7, it’s more intuitive than ever to check the security status of multiple Samsung smart devices, including Galaxy mobile devices, TVs, and home appliances, at a glance. When all connected devices are up to date and no risks are detected, they will show as ‘green,’ or secure. Users can also see if a device is at risk, and the dashboard will prompt an actionable recommendation to mitigate the threat.
  • A new recovery method for Enhanced Data Protection adds ease and convenience to the process of retrieving data stored on Samsung Cloud. Enhanced Data Protection keeps connected devices synchronized and secure, also ensuring that if access to a trusted device is lost, users have a backup plan to prevent the loss of their data. With One UI 7, users can now transfer recovered, private data to a new device by verifying the lock screen factor – whether pin, pattern, or password – of their previous device.
  • As part of Knox Matrix’s Credential Sync, Samsung has developed new ways to manage and secure identities and credentials for today’s hyperconnected world in the form of passkeys. With One UI 7, users can now create and use passkeys to log into their Samsung Account. As digital authentication credentials, passkeys enable a faster, easier way to securely log in to apps, devices, and websites — so users can safely sign into their TVs, AI Family Hub refrigerator, and more, simply by using the fingerprint sensor on their smartphones.

Maximum Restrictions Boost User Control

image

Maximum Restrictions establishes a powerful line of defense against today’s cyber threats. One UI 7 further enhances user choice with new features designed to protect those who may need additional safeguards.

  • Maximum Restrictions has been updated with added controls for network connections so users can enjoy the peace of mind that comes from boosted protection without losing access to key device functionalities.
  • Thanks to the added controls, users have the choice to block 2G service and prevent data from being intercepted when connected to potentially unsafe networks.
  • Users can also prevent unintended automatic reconnection to certain Wi-Fi networks that may be less secure, ensuring data remains private while still having the option to connect manually if desired.

This update enhances Maximum Restrictions’ existing suite of protections for Samsung Messages and Samsung Gallery, which allows users to:

  • Remove location data in shared photos,
  • Prevent automatic attachment downloads, and
  • Block hyperlinks, previews, and shared albums.

More Security Settings Bring Added Device Protection

One UI 7 introduces a redesigned lock screen experience featuring Now Bar

One UI 7 introduces even more ways users can adjust security settings to best suit the ways in which they use their device.

  • Users can choose to block USB connections to prevent any other access through the USB port while the device is locked, except for battery charging.
  • To protect against malicious apps that come from sideloading, One UI 7’s new Safe Install system works alongside Auto Blocker to send a warning when a user attempts to download from an unauthorized source, alerting them of security risks and preventing unintentional sideloading on Galaxy devices worldwide.

Theft Protection Enhances Data Privacy

One UI 7 introduces new features available only on Galaxy devices to the Android suite of theft protection solutions, enhancing the safeguards in place to ensure personal data remains secure even when devices are lost or stolen.

  • In addition to Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock, Galaxy users can now leverage additional security measures in Identity Check, an opt-in feature designed for when a device’s PIN becomes compromised.
    • When in an unfamiliar location, biometric authentication will be required to make any changes to important security settings that could put personal information at risk.
    • As an added safeguard, a one-hour security delay will prevent unauthorized users from making any immediate changes to the device.

One UI 7 is the next step in Samsung’s commitment to privacy on AI, introducing advanced security features to ensure complete protection in the era of AI. The official One UI 7 release will commence with upcoming Galaxy S series devices, featuring additional AI capabilities including enhanced, hardware-dependent on-device AI functions, starting from the first quarter of 2025.

The One UI 7 beta program will be first available for Galaxy S24 series devices in Germany, India, Korea, Poland, the UK, and the US, from December 5. Galaxy S24 series users can apply to join the beta program via Samsung Members.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to keep the policy repo rate unchanged at 6.5% for the 11th meeting in a row.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das announced the decision, which reflects a neutral stance supported by a 4:2 majority.

“Monetary policy has a wide-ranging impact, price stability is important for every segment of society,” Das said during his final Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) statement.

The repo rate has remained at 6.5% since February 2023 following a series of six rate hikes totalling 250 basis points between May 2022 and February 2023.

The RBI’s decision to hold rates comes despite inflationary concerns and GDP growth slowing to 5.4% in Q2 FY25. Das highlighted key risks including weather disruptions, financial volatility and geopolitical tensions, which could push inflation higher.

“Food inflation is likely to persist, with relief likely only in Q4,” Das cautioned, adding that the central bank’s CPI inflation projection for FY25 stands at 4.8%. He reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to balancing growth and inflation:

“Our aim is to adhere to the flexible inflation target,” Das added.

Apart from the repo rate, the following key rates also remain unchanged –

  • Standing Deposit Facility (SDF): 6.25%
  • Marginal Standing Facility (MSF): 6.75%
  • Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR): 4.5%
  • Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR): 18%

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive for India & SE Asia at Cushman & Wakefield Anshul Jain said, “Amidst lingering inflationary concerns, RBI has decided to keep the repo rate unchanged at 6.5% for the 11th consecutive time, despite GDP growth tapering to 5.4% in Q2FY25 and recent rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve. While a neutral stance signals flexibility and remains focused on stabilizing the macroeconomic environment, a rate cut would have provided the necessary boost to the GDP while also improving homebuyer’s sentiment in the mid-and-affordable housing segment.”

Jain added, “However, we do anticipate that the RBI would provide the much-needed stimulus soon in the February-2025 MPC meet, to bolster the overall consumer spending. For the housing sector, in particular, lower lending rates would serve as a catalyst for a sustained momentum.”

This MPC meeting was the last for Governor Shaktikanta Das, whose term ends next week. Reflecting on his tenure, Das emphasized the RBI’s use of tools like the repo rate, reverse repo rate and CRR to maintain inflation within the mandated range of 2% to 6%.

For now, markets now look ahead to the February 2025 meeting.
