Google Maps Adopts New Version Number System for Android and iOS

0

Highlights

  • Google Maps has changed its version numbering system.
  • It is now following a format similar to other Google software.
  • This update will unify the version numbering system for both Android and iOS.
  • The update does not bring any noticeable changes for users.

Not every change that an app development team makes to popular apps has anything to do with the users. The latest Google Map update is similar in that context.

Google Maps has been rolling out several updates recently starting from Gemini integration and a new weather feature to the teal accent colour. The latest change, however, is a shift in how the app’s version numbers are structured.

For most Google apps, version numbers don’t indicate significant updates. As noted, “When Google applications go from, for example, version 4 -> 5, it doesn’t mean that there are big changes in that update.”

Google Maps was no exception, with its version numbers previously structured like 11.155.0103. The first number, which might suggest a major version change in other apps, last shifted from 10 to 11 in 2021. (On iOS, the numbering system has been entirely different, such as 6.142.0.)

Going forward, Google Maps will adopt a version format similar to other Google software like Play Services. The new structure looks something like 24.47.01.697822364. The first number likely corresponds to the year (2024), and the second indicates the week of the year.

On Android, users can find the version numbers for Google Maps by navigating to Settings > Apps. Scroll down to Maps and tap on it for the App info page. Next, scroll down to the very bottom of the page to check the Android version number for Google Maps.

Similarly, for iOS, users open the Google Maps app on iPhone and tap the profile icon on the right side of the search bar at the top. Tap on Settings > About, terms & privacy at the bottom to check the Version number.

This better reflects the app’s frequent updates many of which are released weekly, and highlights how most new features are controlled via server-side updates rather than app versions.

One advantage of this change is that Google Maps for Android and iOS will now share the same version numbering system.

This unified approach is already live on the iOS App Store and is expected to roll out via the Play Store soon. In the future, when Google specifies which version is required for new features, this consistent system will make things easier for users.

That said, this update doesn’t bring any noticeable changes for users. It’s more about consistency and clarity for the app’s versioning across platforms.

FAQs

Q1. What recent change has Google Maps made to its version numbering system?

Answer. Google Maps has adopted a new version numbering system that reflects the year and week of release, similar to other Google software like Play Services.

Q2. How will the new version numbering system benefit users?

Answer. The new system will unify the version numbering for Android and iOS, making it easier for users to understand and track updates consistently across platforms.

Q3. Will the new version numbering system bring noticeable changes for users?

Answer. No, the update does not bring noticeable changes for users but focuses on consistency and clarity in app versioning.

Q4. How to check the Google Maps version number on Android?

Answer. On Android, users can find the version numbers for Google Maps by navigating to Settings > Apps. Scroll down to Maps and tap on it for the App info page. Next, scroll down to the very bottom of the page to check the Android version number for Google Maps.

Q5. How to check Google Maps version number on iOS?

Answer. For iOS, users open the Google Maps app on iPhone and tap the profile icon on the right side of the search bar at the top. Tap on Settings > About, terms & privacy at the bottom to check the Version number.

Redmi A4 5G Launched But With No 5G Support for Airtel Users

0

Highlights

  • The Redmi A4 5G launched in India but does not support Airtel’s 5G network.
  • It exclusively works with Jio’s 5G network.
  • The Redmi A4 5G is compatible only with SA (Standalone) 5G networks, which are not yet widely available in India.
  • The phone is available in two variants: 4GB/64GB at ₹8,499 and 4GB/128GB at ₹9,499.

The Redmi A4 5G has entered the Indian market as a budget-friendly 5G smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 chipset. The phone will be available for purchase starting November 27 via Amazon, Mi.com and offline stores.

However, the launch comes with a significant drawback – it does not support Airtel’s 5G network in India. The smartphone works exclusively with Jio’s 5G network.

Here’s a closer look at the issue.

Why Redmi A4 5G Won’t Support Airtel’s 5G?

Redmi A4 5G: A budget-friendly 5G phone with selective network support

According to Redmi’s official product page, the Redmi A4 5G is compatible only with SA (Standalone) 5G networks and does not support NSA (Non-Standalone) networks. This limitation is the main reason it cannot connect to Airtel’s 5G, which currently relies on NSA technology.

SA-only 5G compatibility limits Redmi A4’s network options.

SA 5G uses dedicated network bands and new radio technologies for a more advanced deployment, while NSA 5G leverages existing 4G LTE infrastructure, making it cheaper and faster to implement. While SA 5G is technically superior, both types of 5G networks can deliver comparable experiences, including speeds of up to 1Gbps.

Airtel has announced plans to roll out SA 5G in India, with initial tests underway in locations like Bhubaneswar, Rewari and Chennai.

Redmi A4 5G launched in India with exclusive Jio 5G support.

However, nationwide availability is still a while away. This leaves Redmi A4 5G users dependent on Jio for 5G connectivity.

For Airtel users, the phone’s key feature—5G support—becomes irrelevant, making it a less attractive option unless they are willing to switch networks.

Engineering Student Sent ₹1.1 Crore Legal Notice After Sivakarthikeyan’s Tamil Film ‘Amaran’ Used His Phone Number in Movie Scene That Was Added in Truecaller

0

Highlights

  • An engineering student has filed a ₹1.1 crore lawsuit against the makers of the Tamil movie “Amaran.”
  • His phone number was added to Truecaller after it was used in a movie scene.
  • It leads to incessant calls and further complications.

An innocent-looking scene in Sivakarthikeyan’s Tamil movie Amaran has caused unexpected distress for engineering student VV Vaageesan.

In the film, actress Sai Pallavi’s character, Indu Rebecca Verghese, casually throws a crumpled paper with a phone number on it at Sivakarthikeyan’s character, Major Mukund Varadarajan.

Unfortunately, the phone number displayed in the scene belongs to Vaageesan, leading to chaos in his life.

Vaageesan has now filed a ₹1.1 crore lawsuit against the filmmakers, accusing them of causing “untold hardships and mental agony.” He has demanded the removal of his number from the movie and compensation for the distress he has endured.

Vaageesan described the disruptions to The Hindu, which first reported the story. “Since the calls keep coming, I have to switch my phone to silent mode. I’m worried I might miss emergency calls or important messages from family or friends. I’ve had this number for two years—it’s linked to my bank accounts and shared with many contacts. I can’t afford to change it,” he explained.

He added, “I’m unable to even book a cab or call the driver because of continuous incoming calls.”

Number Added in Truecaller To Add to The Problem

To make matters worse, someone saved Vaageesan’s number on the caller ID app Truecaller under the name “Vaageesan Indu Rebbbica VV.” Truecaller allows users to manually add and label contacts and it seems a fan of the character Indu Rebecca Verghese might have linked the number with this name.

Since Vaageesan’s number was already connected to his name in Truecaller’s database, users who searched for the number saw this new and bizarre name combination.

This prompted even more calls with fans of Sai Pallavi and others trying to contact “Indu Rebecca Verghese” or “Major Mukund’s wife.”

The student reported the issue to his telecom provider, flagging the number as spam. A senior company official confirmed receiving the complaint and said they are working on a response, but no further details were provided.

Vaageesan initially tried to resolve the issue informally by tagging the movie’s director Rajkumar Periyasamy and lead actor Sivakarthikeyan on social media requesting their help.

However, he received no response, which left him with no option but to pursue legal action.

His legal notice seeks the removal of his number from the movie and compensation for the distress caused. As of now, the filmmakers have not responded to the notice.

FAQs

Q1. Why has VV Vaageesan filed a ₹1.1 crore lawsuit against the filmmakers of ‘Amaran’?

Answer. Vaageesan has filed the lawsuit because his phone number was used in a movie scene, causing him distress and leading to incessant calls and disruption in his life.

Q2. How has Truecaller contributed to Vaageesan’s problem after his number appeared in

Tamil film? Answer. Someone added Vaageesan’s number to Truecaller under the name “Vaageesan Indu Rebbbica VV,” causing even more calls from fans of the characters in the movie.

iPhone 17 Air Won’t Get 5x Optical Zoom, LG Innotech’s Upgrades Production Unit For iPhone 17 Pro cameras

0

Highlight

  • The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will not feature a 5x optical zoom lens.
  • 5x optical zoom lens will be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max only.
  • LG Innotech will upgrade its production unit to supply camera modules for the iPhone 17 Pro.
  • iPhone 17 Air Expected Features: 6.6-inch display, a standard A19 chip, Dynamic Island, a single rear camera and potentially Apple’s custom 5G modem.

There is still almost a year’s worth of wait before we can officially know what the iPhone 17 has to offer. Unofficially, however, some key aspects of the iPhone 17 and its expected models have been out in the open for quite a while.

The latest update we are hearing is about its camera system upgrades.

According to a report from The Elec, as briefed by 9to5Mac, next year’s iPhone 17 and the rumoured iPhone 17 Air will not feature a 5x optical zoom lens. Instead, this advanced zoom capability powered by Apple’s tetraprism camera system is expected to remain exclusive to the Pro models, which include the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.

Here’s what we know.

iPhone 17 Air – No 5x Zoom

Currently, the tetraprism system in models like the iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max uses a “folded” design. This allows the camera to fit into the phone while offering up to 5x optical zoom and 25x digital zoom.

However, smaller Pro models, like the iPhone 15 Pro and earlier devices, only provide up to 3x optical zoom.

Standard models, such as the iPhone 16, support up to 2x optical-quality zoom. The iPhone 17 is expected to maintain that level, but details about the iPhone 17 Air’s zoom capabilities remain unclear.

Reports suggest the Air will feature only a single 48-megapixel rear camera.

iPhone 17 Pro – Camera (Expected)

The Elec report also mentions that the LG Innotech camera module plant would probably be used in the iPhone 17 Pro camera.

According to the report, “LG Innotech announced on the 21st that it will invest 375.9 billion won to secure a new facility for the camera module (Optical Solution Division). The purpose of the investment is “to respond to new models of optical solution business and improve competitiveness” […] LG Innotech currently has the largest market share of Apple iPhone camera modules, so there is no need to significantly increase production capacity right away. For this reason, the purpose of this investment seems to be to replace equipment and facilities due to the high specification of the iPhone 17 series camera module.”

iPhone 17 Air – What Is Expected?

The iPhone 17 Air has been surrounded by mixed rumours. While it’s expected to be Apple’s thinnest iPhone ever, it will likely lack some of the features seen in the Pro models.

The Air is rumoured to feature a 6.6-inch display, a standard A19 chip, a Dynamic Island, and a single rear camera, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. It could also be one of the first devices to use Apple’s custom 5G modem, replacing Qualcomm’s modems. However, it’s unclear if this will offer noticeable benefits to consumers.

Apple’s move to introduce its custom 5G modem with the iPhone 17 Air suggests a focus on making it the first step in the company’s cellular technology roadmap.

FAQs

Q1. Will the iPhone 17 Air feature a 5x optical zoom lens?

Answer. No, the iPhone 17 Air will not feature a 5x optical zoom lens. This advanced zoom capability is expected to remain exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models.

Q2. What upgrades is LG Innotech making in relation to the iPhone 17 Pro?

Answer. LG Innotech is upgrading its production unit to secure a new facility for the camera module to meet the high specifications of the iPhone 17 Pro series camera module.

Q3. What are the expected features of the iPhone 17 Air?

Answer. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to feature a 6.6-inch display, a standard A19 chip, Dynamic Island, a single rear 48-megapixel camera, and potentially Apple’s custom 5G modem.

The Threads development team is in active mode these days as we regularly hear about new feature updates and tests.

The app is in the middle of a series of updates rolled out recently. After announcing the Custom Feeds feature last week, Meta officially launched it just a few days later.

The platform also tweaked its algorithmic feeds to improve user experience. And now the app is finally addressing long-standing user complaints with several updates including improved search functionality and enhanced trending topics.

The Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri announced the Advanced Search feature recently in a post on Threads. He called the changes “long-overdue improvements.”

View on Threads

Advanced Search Features

Threads is testing advanced search tools including the ability to search for posts within specific date ranges and account-specific searches. These features are similar to the advanced search options on X (formerly Twitter) and aim to make it easier for users to find specific posts.

Previously, the lack of advanced search on Threads meant users often relied on Google to locate specific content.

Trending Now on Threads

Mosseri announced that the app is also experimenting with AI-powered summaries for its “trending now” section, which currently displays a handful of popular topics.

The update will expand the list to show up to 15 trends, up from the current five. These AI summaries are reminiscent of X’s “Grok” feature, though it’s unclear how Meta plans to implement its summaries. Meta already uses AI to summarize discussions on Facebook, so this approach could carry over to Threads.

Landscape Videos Now Supported

Apart from Mosseri announcing the search and trending updates, the Threads Team also confirmed that the app has added the long-requested feature of support for landscape videos.

Previously, users couldn’t properly view horizontal videos on the app even in full-screen mode. Threads now allow users to watch videos and view photos in landscape mode with the latest update to the iOS app.

The Threads team confirmed the feature after users noticed the change, with the official Threads account responding, “You found it.”

View on Threads

These updates reflect Threads’ effort to stay competitive by addressing user feedback and introducing features that rival platforms already offer.

These updates also come at a time when reports of Threads facing competition from Bluesky have been making rounds. Bluesky is a rival decentralised platform that has grown to over 20 million users.

Have you ever wondered which is the most popular iPhone model sale-wise? Well, a Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) has been recently released just to give us an idea about that. Here’s a quick roundup of the report findings.

According to the CIRP report, Apple’s base model iPhones made up 42% of its smartphone sales in 2024, but the iPhone Pro Max emerged as the best-selling individual model.

The 42% share for base models includes combined sales across several generations of iPhones sold at varying price points. Meanwhile, the Pro and Pro Max models each represent sales from just the current generation.

Individually, the iPhone Pro Max led with 26% of total sales, followed by the Pro at 19% and Plus models at 13%. The Plus model’s success is particularly interesting, as it replaced the iPhone mini in 2022 and has since outperformed its smaller predecessor in market share.

The data also highlights a strong consumer shift toward larger displays.

When Apple launched its first large-screen phone iPhone 6 Plus in 2014, many doubted its appeal. Fast forward to today, and the combined sales of the Pro Max and Plus models account for 39% of all iPhones sold, reflecting a clear preference for bigger screens.

Pro Max and Plus models drive 39% of iPhone sales.

CIRP notes that larger models like the Plus and Pro Max significantly boost Apple’s average selling price and profit margins. While they share many internal components with smaller models, their larger size commands a premium price. Notably, the report excludes sales of the entry-level iPhone SE.

Apple’s tiered product lineup has successfully catered to a wide range of user preferences and price points. As CIRP puts it, Apple’s “jumbo phone experiment” has been a resounding success.

However, it’s unclear how the rumoured iPhone 17 “Air” that will be slimmer but not larger is going to fit into this strategy next year.
