Audio chat platform Clubhouse opens up for everyone

0

Ending an invitation-only mode, social audio platform Clubhouse has opened its virtual rooms to all comers. Anyone could join using smartphones powered by Apple or Google-backed Android software, said Clubhouse which did away with its waiting list.

Paul Davison and Rohan Seth, the founders of the popular audio chat forum, said, “We’re thrilled to share that Clubhouse is now out of beta, open to everyone, and ready to begin its next chapter.”

“Everyone in the world should have access to meaningful conversations,” they said in a blog post.

Clubhouse made its debut a year ago and has grown to hosting half a million “rooms” daily, with the average listener spending more than an hour a day in the online community, as per the founders. Davison and Seth said, “We suspect there will be many more ups and downs as we scale, and competition from the large networks will be fierce.”

According to AppMagic, Clubhouse has been downloaded over 18 million times since December.

Interestingly, Twitter also jumped into the live audio sector by launching Spaces in December and Facebook came up with Live Audio Rooms.

Swedish online music streaming platform Spotify last month launched a live audio app called Greenroom, which is akin to Clubhouse.

If reports are to be believed, these platforms also have to compete with Discord, which has been offering live audio since 2015 and has more than 140 million users.

Join a group call even after missing it on WhatsApp

0

You may now join a group video or voice call on WhatsApp after it’s started and was missed initially. The popular messaging platform owned by Facebook has started rolling out this – joinable group calls – feature, which will help users join a group call even if they initially miss a call when their phone rings.

The all-new update, as per the company, also brings an easy way to let you drop-off and rejoin a group WhatsApp call — as long as the call is still ongoing. Up until now, WhatsApp users were not given a native option to join a group call. However, participants in an active call could add members during a voice or video call on the platform.

In a blog post, WhatsApp said that joinable calls reduce the burden of answering a group call as it starts and bring the spontaneity and ease of in-person conversations to group calling on the platform. You will see a Tap to join option in the call log on WhatsApp to join an ongoing group call even if it was missed originally. All you need to do is to just hit that option to join the call.

The instant messaging platform has also created a new call info screen that will allow users to see who all have been invited for the conversation but not yet joined. You can also look at the active participants of the call from the call info screen instead of getting their details after joining the call. Besides, the call info screen has an Ignore button to let you ignore a call and join it later from the Calls tab in WhatsApp.

Earlier, WhatsApp was spotted testing joinable calls on the platform. WhatsApp for iOS beta version 2.21.140.11 carried the new experience for iPhone users. It also included the call screen that looked similar to Apple’s FaceTime interface. Shortly after the iOS release, it brought joinable calls to beta testers on Android. The overall experience looks similar on both iOS and Android versions.

Although WhatsApp has not provided exact details on when you’ll get joinable calls on your phone, it is expected to arrive on the latest versions of WhatsApp for Android and iOS soon.

WhatsApp came up with group calling feature in 2018. Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the adoption of group calls increased like never before due to social distancing norms.

iPhone 13 leak hints at always-on display feature and more

0

The new iPhone 13 launch is still a couple of months away but the leaks have long spoilt the surprise Apple has planned for this year’s model. Over the past few months, we have heard a lot about the next iPhone series, thanks to all the rumors and leaks that have been coming out. In fact, we have seen leaks regarding its performance, design, camera, display and more. We already know that the range is expected to have 4 models, which will include, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. A recent leak now suggests that the iPhone 13 series may have an always-on display feature similar to the one on the Apple Watch. The same feature has been present on Android devices for many years.

Specifically, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg has shared some leaks related to the next-gen iPhones in the latest ‘Power On’ newsletter. He writes that Apple’s iPhone 13 display will be far better than what we have been seen before. According to Bloomberg’s journalist, the next generation of iPhone flagship is also expected to have an improved battery life, better video recording, a smaller notch on the screen, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a faster A15 chip.

Gurman reports that Apple has tasked suppliers with building up to 90 million new iPhones for this fall, which is a 20 per cent increase over the 75 million units Apple planned in 2020. The new iPhone will likely be variable in nature and the transition will be based on the work you do on your phone.

Earlier, a leakster Max Weinbach had hinted that Apple may use the same low temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) similar to its Watches on future iPhones. Apple uses LTPO panels on its Watches as they can support the always-on display feature. It dynamically adjusts screen refresh rates of Watch to conserve battery life. Another earlier report by Bloomberg reported that at least one of the four new iPhones will have an LTPO display. A noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, earlier this year, had also said that the new iPhone will pack LTPO displays and 120Hz refresh rates. According to him, iPhone 13 is expected to pack an ultra-wide lens with autofocus. This will mark a change from the present iPhone 12 Pro series where the ultra-wide camera has fixed focus and cannot focus on a specific object. The analyst also believes that iPhone 13 Pro’s ultra-wide lens will have six elements, instead of five.

Apart from upgrades in display, the next gen iPhone 13 may come in two new color options, that is, Pearl and Sunset Gold. It will likely to support Wi-Fi 6E and on the camera module on the Pro model is reported to be larger than its predecessor. In addition to this, the new iPhone is reported to feature improved wide-angle lens and faster wireless charging over the last generation of iPhones.

A new iPhone series will also likely to bring a few improvements to the device’s performance. The entire series might get storage options of up to 1 TB and retain iPhone 12 Pro Max’s dual camera set-up with a main camera and an ultra-wide camera.

While Apple may launch all the iPhone 13 models with OLED displays, most of these upgrades are expected to be reserved for the Pro variant. Most Android smartphones with OLED panel support the always-on display mode, which is customizable. Users can add settings toggles such as those for LED flashlight, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and cellular data on select phones. As per the previous reports, only the Pro variants will get the LTPO display technology along with the improved cameras. The smaller notch is likely to come on all the models and the bigger battery life could be reserved for the Max variant.

Last year, Apple re-introduced a flat-edged design for the iPhone, and the 2021 iPhone will likely build on that design. It is expected to be slightly heavier and thicker to accommodate the larger batteries and more advanced displays. However, none of this is likely to be officially confirmed until the Apple’s iPhone 13 series launches.

iPhone 13 release date and price

Apple is expected to release the 2021 iPhone, also known as the iPhone 13 series in mid-September. It will likely release them to the public after a short pre-order period in mid-to-late September. If we talk about the pricing of new iPhone 13 series, with one leak suggesting the structure is expected to remain the same. The iPhone 13 Mini will likely come in at around $700. The standard iPhone 13 will come in around $800, while the iPhone 13 Pro will cost $1,000, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max will cost $1,100.

“No-code will be the future of app development”

0

Digital transformation is the need of the hour. One who doesn’t embrace it, will get lost in the crowd. The same applies to businesses which have been hampered badly by COVID-induced lockdowns that have brought to fore the flimsiness of various processes of organizations that weren’t considered weaknesses until then. However, organizations have rapidly realized the needs and benefits of going fully digital because of the pandemic, which has caused an acceleration (and in some cases creation) of digital roadmaps. Quixy is one such cloud-based no-code application development platform that allows business users with no coding skills to automate workflows and processes, and build enterprise-grade applications, using simple drag and drop design, 10 times faster compared to the traditional approach. Quixy provides dozens of pre-built solutions for various sectors from education to finance and FMGC to tech. Gautam Nimmagadda, Founder and CEO, Quixy, shares with Ramesh Kumar Raja the nitty-gritty of the emerging trend, the way forward and the future of no code/low code platform in India and abroad. Excerpts:

What’s so unique about Quixy at a time when there are a number of companies/ platforms offering services of app development?

Our competitors fall under two categories. The first category is no-code platforms that can be used to build basic applications without writing any code. The flip side here is that these platforms cannot be used to develop complex enterprise-grade applications. The second category is low-code platforms that can be used to develop enterprise-grade applications. However, low-code platforms require some degree of coding and can only be used by professional developers.

This is where Quixy has an edge, as it falls in the sweet spot between the two categories with its “Advanced No-Code” capabilities. Business users themselves can use Quixy to build powerful enterprise-grade applications at a rate that is 10 times faster and with 60% fewer resources without writing any code.

Can you please tell us about the technicalities involved in no-code application development and how it is different from the conventional method?

When any business requires digitization of their processes, the available options are procurement of a COTS product or bespoke development done by an external IT vendor or an internal IT team. COTS products, by default, have limited customization options. Any additional customization is either not possible or attracts hefty customization cost and time. Bespoke development, on the other hand, costs businesses time and money. It is also often unsuccessful since business requirements are lost in translation as the business users are not involved throughout the development life cycle. Effectively, both of these alternatives cost business time and money without ensuring success hindering business growth and competitive edge in the market.

No-code application development stands out as the perfect option in this regard. Platforms like Quixy help business users to develop enterprise-grade applications with absolutely no coding skills. Quixy platform features a powerful UI builder, workflow builder, database management, reporting, dashboarding, integrations, ready-to-use templates, effortless deployment, and a ton of offerings that make building high-functioning apps in no time.

“Quixy platform features a powerful UI builder, workflow builder, database management, reporting, dashboarding, integrations, ready-to-use templates, effortless deployment, and a ton of offerings that make building high-functioning apps in no time”

What makes no-code tools so appealing to people?

Currently, only 0.03% of the world population can write code and develop applications. Quixy platform empowers any citizen with basic computer knowledge to build applications without writing any code. The platform can be compared to Lego blocks, as business users can use Quixy’s building blocks to create any application according to their needs.

The platform also helps businesses cut downtime and costs typically involved with application development. Organizations across various industries have used the Quixy platform to digitally transform their business at least 10 times faster with 75% fewer resources. The saved time and money can instead be spent on processes that are more strategic and crucial for business success.

What kinds of solutions are most sought after in Indian market and how Quixy is leveraging the trends?

Gartner predicts that by 2023, 65% of all software development will be done through low-code/no-code platforms.

Quixy is leveraging these trends by establishing a strong presence as a leading no-code platform. It serves customers in 15+ industry verticals across 6 continents spanned across various sizes and industries. The solutions they built on the platform are also quite diverse. Some of the enterprise-grade solutions that were built on the platform include Procurement & Inventory, Project Management, Budget & Expenditure, Container-Freight-Station (CFS) management system, an Insurance Claim processing process, and an end-to-end HRMS system. Therefore, Quixy is a pioneer in realizing the true potential of the no-code transformation and is empowering organizations to create solutions across various processes.

The COVID-19 lockdowns are a blessing in disguise for companies like Quixy as people now realize the importance of digital transformation of their businesses. How has been the experience so far for you?

COVID-19 has spotlighted the fragility of various processes (internal and external) of organizations that weren’t considered weaknesses until then. Organizations have quickly realized the needs and benefits of going fully digital because of the pandemic, which has caused an acceleration (and in some cases creation) of digital roadmaps.

Quixy’s advanced no-code platform has enabled organizations to:

  • Quickly build solutions for their specific needs
  • Iterate fast and improve using the feedback received from their stakeholders
  • High business user participation leads to higher quality solutions, as the business users generally know the business’s needs better than IT teams.

This has helped organizations embrace the pandemic-led digital transformation successfully and have been able to effectively leverage the no-code disruptor.

What are your pain points in dealing with the people/clients to make them understand the whole concept of app building, as many of the old-fashioned businessmen still hesitate in giving a digital makeover to their businesses?

Prior to the pandemic, while businesses talked about digital transformation, they were still taking their own sweet time to get started. But the pandemic broke the manual processes for businesses, leaving them no choice but to switch to digital solutions.

However, no-code platforms are still relatively new for businesses. Therefore, we need to educate them about the benefits of no-code over custom app development using professional developers or using one-size-fits-all solutions. Businesses also need help with adoption and governance strategies to embrace and succeed with no-code platforms like ours successfully.

Please share your recent traction details with us. What is your monetization model and what are the segments you offer to attract users?

Quixy is an industry agnostic solution, and we currently have customers of all sizes from various industry segments such as Ports, Construction, Manufacturing, Banking, Hospitality, FinTech, Education, Energy, Consulting, etc. We are currently offering the platform on a monthly and annual subscription basis where our customers can pay for the solutions they build on our platform or for the number of their users who use the platform. We also offer custom price plans for large enterprises.

“We are currently offering the platform on a monthly and annual subscription basis where our customers can pay for the solutions they build on our platform or for the number of their users who use the platform. We also offer custom price plans for large enterprises”

What is the size of app market in India and where does Quixy fit in driving businesses?

The global low-code no-code development platform market is predicted to generate a revenue of $187.0 billion by 2030, rising from $10.3 billion in 2019. This market is expected to advance at a fast pace of 31.1% CAGR during the forecast period (2020-2030). We plan to grow at a rate that is double the industry standard, considering the uniqueness of our pioneering platform. The market size is still very big and our differentiator is advanced no-code, for which we are gaining impressive traction that is bound to increase with time.

Do you wish to make Quixy global? What are your plans to extend its reach?

Quixy has already made its presence globally. It was founded in 2019 and was mainly focused on catering to Indian clients who we reached out through platforms like LinkedIn. We were eager to expand our client base and encourage digital transformation across the globe.

After 18 months of hard work, Quixy is now serving customers in over 15 industry verticals, including Manufacturing, Infrastructure, Construction, BFSI, Pharmaceutical, Energy, and Education. We have customers worldwide, including North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Europe, and Australia.

What according to you is going to be the future market trends in terms of app development?

No-code will be the future of app development and overtake the traditional approach. We believe that 70-80% of enterprises will start using no-code for app development in the next 3-4 years. This is in line with Gartner’s prediction that by 2024, 75% of large enterprises will be using at least four low-code no-code development tools for IT application development and citizen development initiatives. This shift to no-code will further spur innovation in this space, which will further improve no-code platforms’ capabilities with time, creating a snowball effect.

We will also see no-code spread extensively beyond app development to a much broader digital landscape due to the unique advantages of democratization, speed, and agility. The future is bright for no-code, and I am incredibly excited for Quixy to reach new heights as we progress ahead.
