Gaming: A Sleeping Giant Exploded in 2021

0

The growth of Gaming and Esports in 2021 is attributed to the rise in the young population, increased use of smartphones, easy availability and accessibility of technology and internet, to name a few

When COVID-19 halted traditional sports events in India, the esports and gaming industry quickly pivoted and offered virtual entertainment. With entire populations staying home, online viewership has skyrocketed. The credit for this majorly goes to the rise in the young population, increased use of smartphones, easy availability and accessibility of technology and internet, rising investment by capitalists, and appropriate distribution network. Publishers like Garena, Riot, Krafton etc. are actively involved in investing and growing esports in India. Here’s how the year fared for platforms, organisations and brands and their upcoming plans for the year 2022:

Abhishek Aggarwal, Co-founder and CEO, Trinity Gaming, India’s top gaming talent management company

How have businesses been in 2021?

Things were uncertain for sure, at least towards the beginning of the year. However, I would say we rather sailed through it pretty smoothly. I am glad that we have a strong team and even though challenges were there, together we made everything possible and simple. Trinity Gaming continued to support the talents while associating them with brands like Truke, CellBell, Coca-Cola, etc. enabling them to monetize.

What will be your focus area for 2022? Tell us about your plans.

We aim to bring more diverse talents under the Trinity Gaming banner. We are constantly doing R&D, identifying talents, even penetrating Tier II, Tier III locations, and beyond. We are even exploring the vernacular content creators as that still demands more attention and has high potential. Creators who have a great command in vernacular languages and can stream in native language making their content more relatable to a classified section of the population is a great format to explore. We are on a mission to build a stronger esports community by supporting these talents. We want our creators to monetize through their passion for esports.

The Smart Generation: The Evolution of Tech Requirement and Consumer Needs

0

Smart technology had embedded into our lives before we even realised it. Let’s take a glimpse on how.

We avoid going out to eat anymore. We order in from Zomato or Swiggy
Our kids have the option of studying online from any part of the globe
We don’t go out to play football in our neighbourhood park anymore. We play Battleground or Freefire on our smartphones and laptops
We instead of going to the offices, we work remotely from our laptops
We don’t go to weddings anymore. We attend them on Zoom.
We don’t use colours, brushes, and paper to paint anymore. We have multiple editing apps for that.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has driven 7.9 billion people indoors, we have become reliant on digital technology to remain sane while maintaining social distancing norms. It has become the majority of our lifeline, resulting in excessive screen time. A study revealed that 65% of the children have become savvy to electronic devices, while 50% cannot stay away from their gadgets for even half an hour.

This is just a small instance. To meet the growing demand for newer technology and smarter gadgets, R&D teams of almost all consumer tech manufacturers are clocking in overtime. Today, innovation isn’t an expectation anymore; it’s a demand. The technological advancements are so rapid that with each passing year, the latest model of the smart appliance or gadget of this year becomes obsolete the next year. To remain relevant in this rapidly changing market, smart device and digital technology manufacturers are required to deliver better devices with better features, better performance, better battery life, safer viewing experience, and multi-functionality.

“The technological advancements are so rapid that with each passing year, the latest model of the smart appliance or gadget of this year becomes obsolete the next year. To remain relevant in this rapidly changing market, smart device and digital technology manufacturers are required to deliver better devices with better features, better performance, better battery life, safer viewing experience, and multi-functionality”

Let’s understand how smart technology requirements have changed in the past few years and what we can expect in the coming days:

The Race Toward Larger RAM

Multitasking is a major element that influences consumers’ purchasing decisions. Be it a smartphone, tablet, or laptop, people love to split their screens to get more work done at a time. Therefore, almost all application developers create widgets or settings to optimally perform in half the screen. Many consumers often do not entirely exit from the opened applications. It consumes large volumes of data and increases RAM pressure. Today, even 4GB RAM isn’t enough. There is a growing demand for larger RAM capacity.

Better Gaming Experience

India’s virtual gaming industry has grown exponentially. In 2021, the market has recorded revenues worth INR 136 billion ($1.80 billion) and it is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 21 per cent to INR 290 billion ($3.84 billion) in the next five years. This growth can be attributed to people spending most of their time at home. Games like Call of Duty, Battlegrounds, Free Fire, PUBG, Asphalt 9: Legends, etc. consume huge amounts of data and space, which results in lagging performance, screen tearing or staggering, heating of devices during longer gameplay, poor colours on-screen, and delay in the responsiveness of touch screen. Proprietary Dar Link Technology, developed by Infinix, addresses all these pain points and amplifies the user’s sensory, interaction, and visual experience.

Remote-Work Compatibility

The rapidly changing world has boosted the gig economy and WFH situations. While some companies have chosen to shift to 100% remote work, some opted for hybrid work culture. Regardless, work-from-home is today’s reality. The pandemic has made laptops indispensable for everyone, especially the students, working professionals and young entrepreneurs. India’s laptop market has grown from 64.3% in 2018 to 87% in Q2 of 2021.

Consumers are looking for a laptop that is ultra-light, sleek, stylish, cost-effective, offers better performance and connectivity, does not lag, has good battery backup, brighter and clearer display, and comes with advanced gaming specifications.

To meet all these needs into one single device, Infinix ventured out to the laptop market and launched its first revolutionary notebook series INBook X1 (available in three processor variants i3 (256 GB), i5 (512GB), and the top speed i7 (512GB)). The INBook series is built for today’s mobile-first users, who expect seamless communication, sustainable productivity, and immersive entertainment—all in one device.

To Conclude

The debate over how society today has become too dependent on smart technology and its role amid the pandemic in connecting the world can’t be discounted. Over time, people’s need for technology has evolved, and it has made life easier, safer, and more enjoyable in numerous ways. We should find a balance in how we utilise technology. It should be used in a way that complements our lifestyle.

Ever since the transition to a homebound economy, smartphones have increasingly become an integral part of an individual’s everyday lifestyle. As per a new study by CyberMedia Research, Indian consumers are now prioritizing audio quality as a key smartphone purchase driver. The study – aimed at understanding how consumers are consuming content – underlined the importance given to audio quality and what users seek while purchasing their next smartphone. The findings showcased that 69% smartphone users seek enhanced audio experience on smartphones. The study also established that for smartphone users in India, Dolby Atmos is essential for an enhanced and immersive audio experience. In this regard, Ramesh Kumar Raja talks to Ashim Mathur, Senior Regional Director, Japan & Emerging Markets, Dolby Laboratories, to discuss the current audio consumption pattern in the new normal and how Dolby is enhancing and elevating the experience for smartphone users through Dolby Atmos, whether in terms of music, episodic content, gaming etc. Excerpts:

Why is audio becoming so important for a smartphone user? What factors are driving this trend?

In these times of a homebound work, there is an exponential rise in online video content consumption by the masses thereby creating a significant demand for richer smartphone audio quality that consumers do not want to compromise on.

To understand this changing consumer sentiment, Cyber Media Research (CMR), a leading research and consulting firm, conducted the study titled, “What Audio Means for Smartphone Users?”. The study reveals consumer insights on audio for smartphones and consumer preference for quality audio experiences. Consumers are more tuned into ‘audio quality’, possibly driven by long hours spent alone in a homebound economy. In doing so, they are also seeking better, immersive experiences whenever and wherever they go and across use cases.

What are the most preferred content forms driving people to take the audio quality seriously while purchasing a smartphone?

After a year and more of social distancing, audio consumption trends have further intensified. The consumer relationship with audio is constantly evolving. Audio is playing a key role in consumer lives across content types – episodic shows, music, movies, live sports, or mobile gaming. According to the CMR study, movies (86%), music (82%), user-generated content (68%) are the three most-preferred content forms for consumers on their smartphones. Beyond movies and music, consumers consume audio across specific use contexts, including Live TV (75%), Gaming (68%), and watching sports (58%) amongst others. Long-form content consumption is on the rise. There has been a 67% increase in consumers watching longer content online (>2 hours) than a year ago. In 2021, consumers made a leap from freemium to premium on OTT platforms. There is 9% rise in paid subscription over last year.

Which age group is more inclined towards the smartphone audio quality?

The study reveals that across the board- digital natives (18-24 years), digital dependents (25-30 years), or digital laggards (31-40 years), smartphone audio quality is the top-most purchase driver (69%), ahead of camera and battery.

How does Dolby Atmos provide an enhanced immersive experience for smartphone users?

Dolby Atmos for mobile is an audio technology that revolutionizes how you and your customers will experience various content. With Dolby Atmos, sounds envelop them in a rich soundscape with astonishing clarity, depth, and detail. Dolby Atmos renders each sound with lifelike detail and clarity, making it easier to detect the subtle, but game-changing sounds that would normally be stifled by competing sounds. It is a premium entertainment experience that helps you feel a deeper connection to the movies, shows, music, sports, and games you love.

The survey highlights that three in every four smartphone users are aware of Dolby Atmos technology and 90% are willing to recommend Dolby Atmos enabled content or smartphone to their family and friends.

“Dolby Atmos for mobile is an audio technology that revolutionizes how you and your customers will experience various content. With Dolby Atmos, sounds envelop them in a rich soundscape with astonishing clarity, depth, and detail. Dolby Atmos renders each sound with lifelike detail and clarity, making it easier to detect the subtle, but game-changing sounds that would normally be stifled by competing sounds”

How is Dolby leveraging this trend? How is it exactly benefitting the OEMs?

Online content consumption – movies and music, have witnessed tremendous growth over the past few years. Content consumption on the go, and at home has risen considerably with the increase in affordable and value for money smartphones. People love to binge watch on video streaming platforms, cutting across genres, including episodic content and user-generated video content on social media. In this new normal, immersive, and enhanced smartphone audio is a key priority for consumers.

Smartphone brands are responding to these emerging consumer needs, with advanced technology solutions, such as Dolby Atmos. The consumer survey points out that consumers seek Dolby Atmos-enabled smartphone audio experiences for their favourite content- movies (88%), music (79%) and mobile gaming (65%) more than ever before. As we move forward, the battleground will keep shifting. Smartphone OEMs will seek to respond to consumer demand for best-in-class experiences.

What’s your plan for the India market to take audio experience to the next level?

It is our constant endeavor to deliver breakthrough experiences to billions of people worldwide through a collaborative ecosystem spanning artists, businesses, and consumers. We wish to continue our work with content creators by providing them the tools that enable them to bring the end consumer closer to their stories and to their original intent. We will continue our work with delivery platforms like broadcast and OTT services both for streaming video and music content. And last but not the least, with the playback ecosystem of devices across living room and mobile. We believe when the content, the service and the device are in Dolby, the consumers get the best experience.
