Instagram Faces Backlash Over New Location-Sharing Feature, Mosseri Says Users “Confused” Amid Privacy Concerns

0

Highlights

  • Instagram’s new Map tool shows users’ last active location, prompting backlash over fears of stalking and unwanted tracking.
  • Instagram head Adam Mosseri clarified that location sharing is off by default and requires double consent.
  • Influencers and privacy experts advise users to disable the feature manually.

Meta recently launched a new Instagram Map feature aimed at helping users “stay up-to-date with friends” by sharing their “last active location.” The tool, which functions similarly to Snapchat’s Snap Map, shows users where their friends are posting from.

In a blog post announcing the feature, Meta emphasised that location sharing is off unless you opt in.”

However, backlash quickly followed as many users claimed they were not notified before their location became visible. Among the critics was Bachelor alum and lifestyle influencer Kelley Flanagan, who warned followers to “turn off” the feature, suggesting it could lead to unwanted tracking or even stalking.

Social media analyst Lia Haberman, author of the ICYMI newsletter, told NBC News she wasn’t surprised by the uproar. “Meta doesn’t have the shiniest history when it comes to protecting user privacy, she said, referencing a recent case in which a California jury ruled that Meta had violated the state’s Invasion of Privacy Act in relation to the Flo period-tracking app. Meta has publicly disagreed with the verdict.

“User data is the company’s golden goose,” Haberman added. “They’ve built an empire selling it to advertisers, usually within legal boundaries, but not always.”

On Threads, multiple users voiced similar concerns. “I can’t believe Instagram launched a map feature that exposes everyone’s location without any warning,” one user wrote.

Another added, Instagram randomly updating their app to include a maps feature without actually alerting people is so incredibly dangerous to anyone who has a restraining order and is actively making sure their abuser can’t stalk their location online… Why.”

Instagram Responds to Criticism

In response to the backlash, Instagram head Adam Mosseri addressed the concerns on Threads, attributing the alarm to user confusion. “We’re double checking everything, but so far it looks mostly like people are confused and assume that, because they can see themselves on the map when they open, other people can see them too,” he wrote.

Mosseri also clarified that the feature includes multiple consent layers, “Quick Friend Map clarification, your location will only be shared *if* you decide to share it, and if you do, it can only shared with a limited group of people you choose. To start, location sharing is *completely off.*”

A Meta spokesperson echoed this to CNBC, stating that “Instagram Map is off by default, and your live location is never shared unless you choose to turn it on. If you do, only people you follow back — or a private, custom list you select — can see your location.”

How to Turn Off Location Sharing on Instagram?

To disable Instagram’s new location-sharing feature –

  • Open Settings in the Instagram app.
  • Tap on “Story, live and location”.
  • When the map view opens, tap the settings icon in the top-right corner.
  • Under “Who can see your location”, select “No one”.
  • Tap “Done” to save your preferences.

For teens using Instagram under parental supervision tools, guardians will be alerted if their child enables location sharing. Parents can also approve or block the setting and view who the teen shares their location with.

FAQs

Q1. Is Instagram’s new location-sharing feature turned on by default?

Answer. No. According to Meta and Instagram head Adam Mosseri, the feature is off by default. Users must actively opt in and choose who can see their location. It includes multiple consent layers to ensure privacy.

Q2. Why are users upset about the Instagram Map feature?

Answer. Many users felt blindsided, claiming they weren’t properly notified before their location became visible. Critics, including influencers and privacy analysts, warned it could enable stalking or tracking, especially for vulnerable individuals.

Q3. How can I turn off Instagram’s location-sharing feature?

Answer. To disable it – Open Settings in the Instagram app > Tap “Story, live and location” > In the map view, tap the settings icon (top-right corner) > Under “Who can see your location”, select “No one” > Tap “Done” to save your preferences.

Truecaller to End Call Recording Support on iPhones from September 30 – Here’s How to Save Your Recordings

0
Truecaller iOS
Automatically blocks calls not from approved contacts or flagged as potential spam

Highlights

  • Truecaller will discontinue its call recording feature for iPhones.
  • iOS users will lose access to saved recordings after September 30 unless they export them or switch storage to iCloud.
  • The move follows Apple’s rollout of native call recording and transcription in iOS 18.1, making third-party workarounds like Truecaller’s obsolete.

Truecaller has announced it will discontinue its call recording feature on iPhones by the end of next month. The company shifts focus toward strengthening its core features such as automatic spam call blocking and real-time spam detection via Live Caller ID. Here’s more on the change.

No Trucaller Call Recording Support on iPhones

Starting September 30, the caller ID app will no longer support call recording on iOS devices. Confirming the change to TechCrunch, Nakul Kabra, Product Director iOS at Truecaller, stated that the decision was made to enhance the app’s anti-spam capabilities instead.

According to the report, this change will affect only iPhone users. From September 30 onward, not only will iOS users lose the ability to record calls using Truecaller, but they will also lose access to any previously recorded calls stored within the app.

To prevent data loss, users are advised to back up their recordings, share them via messaging apps, or switch the storage preference to iCloud.

How to Save Your Call Recordings on iPhone?

To ensure you don’t lose your call recordings on iPhone, follow these steps:

  • Open the Truecaller app.
  • Tap the Record tab at the bottom.
  • Tap the Settings (gear icon) in the top-right corner.
  • Go to Storage Preference and select iCloud storage.

If you’re unable to choose iCloud as the storage option, follow the below steps –

  • Open Settings on your iPhone.
  • Tap your Apple ID profile.
  • Go to iCloud > tap Saved to iCloud.
  • Enable the toggle next to Truecaller.

Users should make sure to complete these steps before September 30 to keep their call recordings safe.

Truecaller initially rolled out the call recording feature for paid iOS subscribers in June 2023, alongside call transcription support. Both features launched in India last year.

However, with iOS 18.1 now offering native call recording support, Truecaller is phasing out its own iOS solution. While the feature remains simple to use on Android, iOS restrictions make third-party call recording difficult. Truecaller had to rely on a workaround by merging calls through a recording line, which Kabra said added to both cost and complexity.

FAQs

Q1. Why is Truecaller removing call recording support on iPhones?

Answer. Truecaller is discontinuing the feature to focus on enhancing its core functionalities like automatic spam call blocking and real-time spam detection via Live Caller ID. The company also cited the complexity and cost of maintaining the iOS workaround for call recording.

Q2. What will happen to my existing call recordings in Truecaller after September 30?

Answer. After September 30, iPhone users will lose access to previously recorded calls stored within the Truecaller app. To avoid data loss, users should back up their recordings or switch the storage preference to iCloud before the deadline.

Q3. How can I save my Truecaller call recordings to iCloud on iPhone?

Answer. To save recordings to iCloud – Open the Truecaller app and go to the Record tab > Tap the Settings (gear icon) and select Storage Preference > iCloud. If iCloud isn’t available – Go to iPhone Settings > tap your Apple ID > iCloud > enable Truecaller under Saved to iCloud.

iPhone 17 Pro May Start at 256GB Storage as $50 Price Hike Rumours Intensify

0

 Highlights

  • Apple may raise prices across the iPhone 17 lineup due to rising component costs and tariffs.
  • The iPhone 17 Pro is now rumoured to start with 256GB storage.
  • Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 series on September 9 with new features and design updates.

If you’re planning to purchase the iPhone 17 Pro, it’s worth preparing for a potentially higher starting price. Apple is expected to raise prices across the entire iPhone 17 lineup. One analyst predicted a $50 increase for every model. Notably, the iPhone 17 Pro is now rumoured to start with 256GB of storage, which may be part of Apple’s effort to justify the price hike. Here’s what we know so far.

17 Pro To Start At 256GB

image

Caption – Tipster Instant Digital’s post on Weibo. (Translated via Google Translate)

The leaker known as Instant Digital on the Chinese app Weibo has doubled down on previous rumours, stating that the iPhone 17 series will be unveiled on Tuesday, September 9. They also speculated that the $50 price increase might come alongside a storage upgrade for some models.

By increasing the base storage of the iPhone 17 Pro to 256GB, Apple would align it with the Pro Max model and effectively offer more value at the new price point. Compared to the current iPhone 16 Pro with 256GB, this change would amount to an effective $50 price cut.

If the reports of price hike hold true, the base iPhone 17 could launch at $849, while the top-tier iPhone 17 Pro Max might start at $1,249 and reach up to $1,649 for higher storage variants.

Currently, the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, and 16 Pro all start with 128GB of base storage, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max begins at 256GB. Their respective starting prices are $799, $899, $999, and $1,199.

Analysts at Jefferies have also projected that Apple would introduce a $50 price hike across the iPhone 17 range to account for increased component costs and tariffs from China.

Similarly, a report by The Wall Street Journal in May suggested that Apple was weighing price increases for the iPhone 17 lineup. However, rather than citing tariffs, the company reportedly plans to justify the higher prices with design updates and new features.

Apple has yet to officially confirm any details.

FAQs

Q1. Will the iPhone 17 Pro be more expensive than its predecessor?

Answer. Yes. Analysts predict a $50 price hike across all iPhone 17 models, with the iPhone 17 Pro expected to start at $1,049, up from $999 for the iPhone 16 Pro.

Q2. What is the expected base storage for the iPhone 17 Pro?

Answer. 256GB. Rumours suggest Apple will upgrade the base storage of the iPhone 17 Pro to 256GB, matching the Pro Max and offering more value at the higher price.

Q3. When is the iPhone 17 series expected to launch?

Answer. September 9. The iPhone 17 lineup is rumoured to be unveiled on Tuesday, September 9, though Apple has not officially confirmed this date.

OpenAI Launches GPT-5 – Major Leap in AI with Smarter, Faster and More Natural Chat Experience

0

Highlights

  • GPT-5 introduces major upgrades in reasoning, speed and contextual understanding, making conversations feel expert-level and intuitive.

OpenAI has officially introduced GPT-5, its next-generation artificial intelligence model, in a livestreamed event. This latest release marks a major advancement in the company’s AI journey, reinforcing its push to stay at the forefront of global AI innovation.

Introducing GPT-5, OpenAI said, “Today we’re introducing GPT‑5, OpenAI’s smartest, fastest, most useful model yet, and a major step towards placing intelligence at the center of every business. GPT‑5 unites and exceeds OpenAI’s prior breakthroughs in frontier intelligence, spanning 4o, OpenAI o-series reasoning, agents, and advanced math(opens in a new window) capabilities. […] GPT‑5 delivers leaps in accuracy, speed, reasoning, context recognition, structured thinking, and problem-solving. The true magic will happen when businesses start applying GPT‑5 to imagine new use cases.”

Described as a significant upgrade in terms of creative writing, complex reasoning, and computer programming, GPT-5 aims to elevate the ChatGPT experience. “For the first time,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, “it really feels like talking to an expert in any topic.”

“GPT‑5 is a unified system with a smart, efficient model that answers most questions, a deeper reasoning model (GPT‑5 thinking) for harder problems, and a real‑time router that quickly decides which to use based on conversation type, complexity, tool needs, and your explicit intent (for example, if you say “think hard about this” in the prompt). The router is continuously trained on real signals, including when users switch models, preference rates for responses, and measured correctness, improving over time. Once usage limits are reached, a mini version of each model handles remaining queries. In the near future, we plan to integrate these capabilities into a single model,” OpenAI further added.

OpenAI, which introduced ChatGPT nearly three years ago using GPT-3.5, has steadily evolved its models to support a wide range of use cases, including reasoning, coding, and autonomous agent workflows.

New Personalities and Smarter Processing

To enhance user interaction, OpenAI has introduced four experimental personality presets in ChatGPT – Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Nerd. These are available as part of a research preview.

GPT-5 also includes a new capability that allows it to autonomously determine how deeply it should process a user’s query, eliminating the need for manual toggling between simple and complex modes. This is expected to improve both performance and efficiency by optimising server load.

Altman Says GPT-5 Made Him Feel ‘Useless’

The debut of GPT-5 has been highly anticipated, especially after Altman hinted earlier this year that the model would exceed expectations. During a recent podcast, he shared a personal anecdote about GPT-5’s intelligence.

“I got emailed a question that I didn’t quite understand and I put it in the model — this is GPT-5 — and it answered it perfectly,” he said. “I felt useless relative to the AI.”

Nick Turley, who leads the ChatGPT team at OpenAI, emphasised that GPT-5 not only responds faster but also delivers more accurate results. “When you’re talking to this thing, it feels just a little bit more natural,” he noted.

GPT-5 Availability

GPT-5 is now accessible to users across all ChatGPT plans, which includes Team, Pro, Plus, and even the free tier. Free users will initially access GPT-5 but will switch to GPT-5 mini after reaching usage limits.

Enterprise and Education customers will gain access next week. OpenAI also plans to release GPT-5 Pro soon, which it describes as “a version with extended reasoning for even more reliable and detailed answers,” available to Team, Enterprise, and Edu users.

Developers using the OpenAI API will have access to GPT-5, GPT-5 mini, and GPT-5 nano models.

Know more about GPT-5 from OpenAI’s official announcement livestream below –

FAQs
