Fake Flipkart Ad Scam on Facebook Tricks Users into UPI Payments via Cashfree

Highlights

  • A fake Flipkart ad on Facebook redirected users to a counterfeit site offering unreal deals, tricking shoppers into UPI payments.
  • The fraudulent site processed payments through Cashfree Payments, raising concerns about how a suspicious domain bypassed verification.
  • The scam site remains active and users are urged to stay vigilant as cybercrime tactics evolve.

Scammers are once again finding new ways to trick unsuspecting users. According to a recent report from TheTechOutlook, one such scam has resulted in a subscriber’s mother being cheated through a fake Flipkart advertisement on Facebook. Here’s more on the full story.

How the Fake Flipkart Scam Works?

As per the report, the victim was scrolling through her Facebook feed when she encountered an advertisement that appeared to be from Flipkart. On clicking it, she was redirected to a mobile landing page designed to look exactly like Flipkart’s official website.

Text: Screenshot of a fake Flipkart website showing a counterfeit deal used in an online scam.
Fake Website Posing as Flipkart. (Screenshot by TheTechOutlook)

The fraudulent page showcased a too-good-to-be-true offer, a Saffola oil pack worth around ₹800 listed as the “deal of the day” for just ₹219. Tempted by the massive discount, she proceeded to complete the purchase through UPI. However, upon closer inspection, it was revealed that the website’s actual URL was https://rakhispecialviral-offer-sound.shop, a domain exposed via Facebook’s in-app browser.

Despite being fake, the site is still active and mimics Flipkart’s interface convincingly.

Payments Processed Through Cashfree Gateway

The fake platform lists only four to five products and each has a “Buy Now” button, which redirects users to a payment page supported by Cashfree Payments, a well-known payment aggregator.

This raises serious questions about how such a suspicious domain, without even the Flipkart name, was able to process transactions through an official payment gateway.

The report further highlights that the fraudulent site remains live, continues to accept payments, and is tricking users in real time. A recording of the full checkout process was also shared, urging Cashfree to block the merchant and initiate refunds for affected customers.

Warning for Shoppers

With scams like these on the rise, online shoppers are advised to be extra cautious, especially when elderly family members are using social media platforms. As TheTechOutlook report notes, “As technology advances, cybercrime will also continue to evolve.”

The publication confirmed that it has reached out to Cashfree Payments for clarification on this issue but has not yet received a response.

FAQs

Q1. How are scammers using fake Flipkart ads on Facebook?

Answer. Scammers post deceptive Flipkart-like ads on Facebook that redirect users to a counterfeit website mimicking Flipkart’s interface, offering unreal discounts to lure purchases.

Q2. What payment method is used on the fake Flipkart site?

Answer. The fraudulent site processes payments via the Cashfree Payments gateway, despite using a suspicious domain unrelated to Flipkart, raising concerns about verification protocols.

Q3. What precautions should Flipkart online shoppers take?

Answer. Users, especially those helping elderly family members, should verify URLs before making purchases and avoid deals that seem too good to be true, as cybercrime tactics are evolving.

Meta confirms WhatsApp patch against advanced spyware attack

Highlights

  • WhatsApp fixed a major iOS and Mac vulnerability exploited in a zero-click spyware attack targeting specific users.
  • Amnesty International revealed a 90-day operation starting in late May, where attackers used WhatsApp to steal sensitive iPhone data without user interaction.
  • This follows past incidents including the Pegasus case and a 2024 campaign targeting journalists in Italy.

WhatsApp has rolled out a crucial security fix for a vulnerability in its iOS and Mac apps that was actively exploited to compromise the devices of “specific targeted users.

The flaw tracked as CVE-2025-55177 has now been patched, according to a security advisory from the Meta-owned platform. Apple had already addressed a related bug, identified as CVE-2025-43300, which was used in combination with the WhatsApp exploit as part of what the company described as a “very sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals.”

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Donncha Ó Cearbhaill, head of Amnesty International’s Security Lab, revealed that the campaign lasted for nearly 90 days starting late May and involved an “advanced spyware operation.” One of the exploited flaws enabled a zero-click attack allowing hackers to compromise devices without any interaction from the victim.

Ó Cearbhaill further explained that the attack chain leveraged WhatsApp as a delivery method to steal sensitive data from iPhones including personal messages. WhatsApp has since issued warning notifications to affected users, though the identities of the attackers or spyware vendors behind the campaign remain unknown

Meanwhile, Meta spokesperson Margarita Franklin confirmed to TechCrunch that the vulnerability had been patched “a few weeks ago” and fewer than 200 WhatsApp users were notified. However, she declined to provide details on who was behind the operation.

This is not the first time WhatsApp has been targeted in government-linked spyware operations. In May, a U.S. court ordered Israeli spyware company NSO Group to pay WhatsApp $167 million in damages over its 2019 Pegasus spyware campaign, which infected more than 1,400 devices.

Earlier in 2024, WhatsApp also blocked a spyware campaign that targeted about 90 individuals, including journalists and civil society members in Italy. While the Italian government denied involvement, spyware maker Paragon later suspended Italy’s access to its surveillance tools.

FAQs

Q1. What vulnerability did WhatsApp patch in its iOS and Mac apps?

Answer. WhatsApp patched a critical flaw tracked as CVE-2025-55177, which was exploited in a zero-click spyware attack targeting specific users. Apple had also addressed a related bug (CVE-2025-43300) used in the same attack chain.

Q2. How did the spyware attack work and who was affected?

Answer. The attack used zero-click techniques, meaning devices were compromised without any user interaction. It targeted fewer than 200 individuals, including those with sensitive data on iPhones, and lasted nearly 90 days starting in late May.

Q3. Has WhatsApp faced similar spyware threats before?

Answer. Yes. In 2019, WhatsApp won a $167 million judgment against NSO Group over the Pegasus spyware. Earlier in 2024, it blocked another campaign targeting journalists and civil society members in Italy.

Instagram Expands DM Management Tools and Begins Testing Picture-in-Picture for Reels

Highlights

  • Instagram adds new inbox filters, customisable shortcuts and DM folders to streamline message organisation.
  • It also begins testing PiP playback, allowing users to watch Reels in a floating window while multitasking across other apps.
  • DM tools are rolling out to Professional accounts and users with over 100K followers, while PiP aims to improve retention and longer viewing sessions.

Instagram is rolling out new updates to its direct messaging (DM) system, giving users more control over how they organise and respond to messages. At the same time, the platform has reportedly also started live testing a picture-in-picture (PiP) option for Reels, allowing users to watch videos while multitasking outside the app.

New DM Filters and Inbox Management

The latest update introduces additional filters for the inbox, making it easier to manage conversations. Users can now sort their messages by Story replies, Unread, Unanswered, Followers and Verified users.

Instagram originally launched DM filters for Creator accounts in November last year, including a Verified filter. Now, these advanced options are being extended to a wider user base.

In addition, users will be able to customise their DM experience by rearranging filter shortcuts at the top of the inbox. While the “Requests” filter cannot be removed, all other filters can be added or removed as per preference.

Instagram is also introducing DM folders through the new “Folders” option, giving users another way to categorise and organise messages more efficiently.

These updates are particularly useful for creators, influencers, and businesses who receive high volumes of messages. With messaging now surpassing Stories and the main feed as the most common engagement method on Instagram, improved DM management can make communication more efficient.

According to the company, these new features will be available to all Professional accounts and personal accounts with more than 100K followers.

Instagram Tests Picture-in-Picture (PiP) for Reels

Alongside inbox upgrades, Instagram has also begun testing picture-in-picture playback for Reels. First discussed by Instagram chief Adam Mosseri back in March, PiP functionality will let users continue watching Reels in a floating window while using other apps.

App researcher Radu Oncescu shared screenshots showing prompts for selected users to try the feature, along with a new toggle in playback settings to enable PiP mode.

It’s important to note that this is a viewing feature, not a creation tool. Both TikTok and YouTube already support PiP, and Instagram’s adoption of the feature aims to keep users engaged for longer periods by allowing them to watch Reels while multitasking.

This could help boost retention rates and encourage longer video viewing sessions, as Reels can essentially continue playing in the background. Instagram confirmed to SMT that the PiP option is being tested with a small group of users.

FAQs

Q1. What new DM management features has Instagram introduced?

Answer. Instagram now offers advanced inbox filters like Story replies, Unread, Verified users, and more. Users can also rearrange filter shortcuts and use DM folders to organise conversations more efficiently.

Q2. Who can access the new DM tools on Instagram?

Answer. These features are being rolled out to Professional accounts and personal accounts with over 100K followers, especially benefiting creators and businesses handling high message volumes.

Q3. What is Instagram’s Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature for Reels?

Answer. Instagram is testing PiP playback for Reels, allowing users to watch videos in a floating window while multitasking in other apps, similar to features on TikTok and YouTube.

The newly introduced voice-enabled search assistant RIYA is designed to simplify how users explore JioHotstar’s massive content library. With thousands of hours of entertainment available, manual searching can be overwhelming. RIYA solves this by enabling natural speech commands to instantly find shows, movies, seasons, or even specific episodes.

The company explained that RIYA understands human thought and speech patterns, curating personalised recommendations and significantly reducing the need for endless scrolling.

Another major addition is Voice Print, a breakthrough feature that uses AI voice cloning and lip-sync technology to deliver localised content in multiple Indian languages.

JioHotstar stated that “Voice Print” is designed to preserve the authenticity of performances by cloning an actor’s or commentator’s voice in another language while keeping their original vocal tone and ensuring perfect lip-sync. This innovation is expected to enhance the viewing experience of sports broadcasts, such as live cricket matches, as well as movies and series.

JioLenz – Multi-Angle Viewing Experience

JioHotstar’s Growth and Content Strength

Alongside these new feature rollouts, JioHotstar highlighted its rapid platform expansion. The service now hosts over 3.2 lakh hours of content, adding nearly 30,000 hours of fresh content each year, a volume that reportedly exceeds the combined libraries of its two closest rivals.

In terms of adoption, JioHotstar has recorded remarkable growth with 600 million users in just three months of launch including 75 million connected TV viewers. Additionally, with 300 million paying subscribers, it has cemented its position as one of the world’s largest streaming platforms.

OnePlus is gearing up for its next-generation flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 15.  This model will succeed the OnePlus 13 as the company skips the number 14. Ahead of its official unveiling, the device has appeared on Geekbench, shedding light on its core specifications. Here’s what we know so far.

OnePlus 15 Geekbench Listing

According to a recent post by tipster Abhishek Yadav @yabhishekhd on X, the OnePlus 15 carrying the model number PLK110 is now listed on Geekbench with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 (also referred to as Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5).

The chipset is shown as an octa-core processor featuring two prime cores clocked at 4.61GHz and six secondary cores running at 3.63GHz. Since the benchmarked unit is still in the testing stage, the recorded scores are on the lower side.

The listing also confirms that the test device was equipped with 16GB of RAM, hinting that 16GB could be the base configuration. The phone is also seen running Android 16 out of the box, customised with OxygenOS 16.

OnePlus 15 – Design and Camera Upgrades (Rumoured)

Leaks suggest that the OnePlus 15 may undergo a major design overhaul. It could be moving away from the circular camera island found in its predecessor to a rounded rectangular module, similar to the OnePlus 13s.

Reports also indicate that OnePlus may end its long-standing Hasselblad partnership, switching instead to OPPO’s Lumo Image Engine for advanced imaging capabilities. The flagship is expected to feature a 50MP main camera sensor, a massive 7000–7500mAh battery supported by 100W fast charging and a 1.5K LTPO display with slimmer bezels.

If the display specs rumour is true, it would be a downgrade from the 2K+ LTPO screen on the OnePlus 13.
