Apple has responded to complaints about scratches and imperfections on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air, especially in the darker finishes. Durability tests have shown that the camera plateau is one of the most vulnerable areas of these new flagships, sparking user concerns.

Apple’s Response

As reported by 9to5Mac, the publication reached out to Apple for clarification after users noticed visible marks on demo units displayed with MagSafe stands in some stores. Apple explained that these are not actual scratches but rather “material transfer” that can be cleaned off.

The company added that it is working to replace worn MagSafe stands in retail stores to prevent the issue.

However, Apple’s explanation regarding scratches on the camera plateau may not reassure all buyers.

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max use an aluminium build instead of the titanium alloy seen in earlier models. While this improves heat dissipation, it makes the devices more susceptible to visible scratches. Apple compared the edges of the camera plateau to the anodised aluminium chassis used on MacBooks, which also develops scratches over time.

According to Apple, such abrasions are “entirely normal” and part of regular wear and tear. While long-term MacBook owners may be familiar with this, customers argue that scratches appearing so quickly on premium smartphones are far from ideal.

Apple’s trillion-dollar reputation rests on delivering high-quality products and this durability concern may test that image. 9to5Mac, in its report, notes, “When Apple announced the iPhone 17 lineup, it touted that the phones use a “lightweight aerospace-grade 7000-series aluminum alloy.” The anodization layer on the phones also exceeds industry standards for microhardness. Apple emphasizes that its products undergo rigorous durability tests during development, including scratch tests. The goal is to make sure the products withstand normal, real-life use. Still, it’s clear there are some durability tradeoffs with the new design compared to the previous-gen titanium frame.”

“I’d also encourage some skepticism when you see images of scratched or damaged iPhones on social media. I’ve seen multiple posts where the damage was clearly intentional, but the person tried to pass it off as normal use. I also don’t think demo units in Apple Stores are a great gauge of durability in general, as they are handled by hundreds, if not thousands, of shoppers every day,” the report further adds.

Since the iPhone 17 series only launched last week across several markets, it may be best to wait for feedback from everyday users who put the devices through daily use over the coming weeks.

Xiaomi wrapped up its major launch event by announcing the global rollout of smart wearables that were previously unveiled in China. The Xiaomi Watch S4 41mm and the Xiaomi OpenWear Stereo Pro wireless earbuds are now making their way to European markets. Here’s more on both the newly launched Xiaomi wearables.

The Xiaomi OpenWear Stereo Pro is an open-ear wireless earbud designed for comfort, weighing just 9.7 grams per piece. It features a five-unit acoustic system that includes a custom 1813 super-large dynamic woofer for deep bass, a dual dynamic iron tweeter module, and a piezoelectric ceramic driver for crisp high frequencies.

The tuning has been done in collaboration with Harman’s Golden Ear team. Users also get spatial audio, 360-degree head tracking, and multiple EQ presets.

For durability and fit, the earbuds come with 0.6mm titanium memory wire ear hooks tested for over 5,000 bends. These hooks offer a 45mm adjustable range to suit various ear shapes. The earbuds use a liquid silicone shell and a three-point ergonomic fit design. Since they don’t fully seal the ear canal, they allow better breathability but may cause sound leakage. To counter this, Xiaomi integrated an anti-leakage sound system that uses reverse-phase sound waves, certified by China’s National Institute of Metrology.

A new series of six drop tests by YouTube channel PhoneBuff pits the iPhone 17 Pro Max against the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s titanium alloy frame, revealing how both flagships perform under pressure.

While both aluminium and titanium alloys have their own benefits, the outcome heavily depends on the angle and surface of the drop. PhoneBuff’s updated testing methodology ensured fair results with drops carried out from 1 meter and 1.5 meters on different sides of each device.

Here’s a breakdown of how each smartphone fared –

1-Meter Drops

Back Drop – The iPhone 17 Pro Max’s rear glass cracked, though less severely than the Galaxy S25 Ultra, which showed major damage around its telephoto lenses and a cracked laser autofocus unit.

Corner Drop – This is where Apple’s aluminium design struggled. The iPhone 17 Pro Max developed visible scuffs and a dent, highlighting aluminium’s malleability. By contrast, the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s titanium frame proved much more resilient.
Front Drop – Both devices suffered cracked displays. On the iPhone, fractures reached the front camera, causing lens flares, though Face ID remained functional. Samsung’s phone also cracked, but its fingerprint sensor kept working.

1.5-Meter Drops

Announcing the new updates, Mahbod wrote, “Google Play is more than just a place to download apps and games. It’s an experience built entirely around you, with curated content and timely information during the moments that matter most. Here’s just a few ways Play is bringing users more from their favorite apps and games, so they can spend less time searching and more time enjoying the content they love.”

Unified Gaming Experience on Google Play

A new gamer profile is being introduced, letting users track achievements and gameplay statistics across devices. Players can also customise their profiles with Gen AI Avatars.

Google is expanding its Play Points rewards program, which will now span both mobile and PC platforms. Users can earn rewards that include exclusive merchandise and even VIP event access at Comic Con San Diego.

Another big highlight is the launch of Play Games Leagues, kicking off on October 10 with Subway Surfers. Running until October 23, these leagues will reward players with Play Points while fostering community competition.

Play Games Sidekick Overlay

Google is also introducing Play Games Sidekick, an in-game overlay powered by Gemini Live. This tool delivers curated tips and real-time assistance without leaving gameplay.
