Leaks around Apple’s next-generation iPhone 18 Pro lineup continue to surface, with fresh claims now shedding light on the size of its redesigned Dynamic Island. Recent rumours have consistently pointed to a smaller cutout on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Now, a new leak has offered specific measurements.

According to well-known tipster Ice Universe @UniverseIce on X, the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro models will be around 35 percent narrower compared to the one found on the iPhone 17 Pro series. The leaker claims the new cutout will measure roughly 13.5mm in width, down from about 20.7mm on current models.

A mock-up image was also shared to illustrate how the slimmer Dynamic Island could appear on the display.

These dimensions reportedly refer to the default appearance of the Dynamic Island when the display is active. This includes the surrounding black pixels that frame the actual cutouts for the Face ID sensors and the front-facing camera. As seen on existing iPhones, the Dynamic Island is expected to temporarily expand when showing Live Activities, alerts, or other on-screen information.

Earlier reporting from The Information suggested that Apple planned to introduce under-display Face ID on the iPhone 18 Pro models. That report claimed the phones would feature only a hole-punch selfie camera positioned in the top-left corner, eliminating the familiar pill-shaped cutout.

However, newer information indicates that only the Face ID flood illuminator may be moved beneath the display this year. As a result, Apple may reduce the size of the Dynamic Island rather than remove it entirely.

Display industry analyst Ross Young has also weighed in, stating that the smaller Dynamic Island design is expected to remain in place through at least 2027. This suggests that a fully seamless, uninterrupted iPhone display could still be several years away.

While Ice Universe has previously shared accurate information about iPhone dimensions, the leaker’s track record is not flawless. Still, the new details add weight to ongoing speculation about Apple’s gradual approach to redesigning the front of its flagship devices.

Apple will most likely announce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September 2026.

Apple has approached an Indian court seeking to prevent India’s antitrust regulator from demanding access to its worldwide financial records as part of an ongoing probe into the company’s App Store practices. According to court documents, the move comes as Apple separately challenges the validity of the legal framework governing penalties under India’s competition law.

The US-based technology giant is currently embroiled in a major legal dispute with the Competition Commission of India (CCI). The Commission has accused Apple of abusing its dominant position through its App Store policies.

Apple has argued that it faces potential penalties of up to $38 billion if the regulator applies a calculation based on the company’s global turnover. The company has already challenged India’s 2024 penalty rules in court and that case is still pending.

Despite the ongoing legal challenge, the CCI proceeded with the investigation and issued a confidential order on December 31 seeking Apple’s financial information. In response, Apple filed a petition dated January 15, requesting that the Delhi High Court direct the CCI to refrain from taking any action against the company for now and to pause the investigation altogether. The filing is not publicly available.

In its submission, Apple contended that complying with the financial disclosure request at this stage would undermine its primary legal challenge to the penalty framework. The CCI, however, has defended the rules, stating that they are essential to deter violations by multinational corporations.

The Delhi High Court is expected to hear the matter on January 27.

Apple has denied all allegations made by the regulator. But neither Apple nor the CCI responded to media requests for comment.

FAQS

Q1. Why has Apple approached the Delhi High Court?

Answer. Apple filed a petition to block India’s antitrust regulator (CCI) from demanding its global financial records during an ongoing App Store practices probe.

Q2. What penalties does Apple fear under India’s competition law?

Answer. Apple argues it could face fines of up to $38 billion if penalties are calculated based on its worldwide turnover.

Q3. When will the Delhi High Court hear Apple’s petition?

Answer. The matter is scheduled to be heard on January 27, following the CCI’s confidential order issued on December 31.

India Opens Lower 6GHz Band for Licence-Free Wi-Fi Use, Sets Strict Power and Usage Limits

0

Highlights

  • India’s DoT has de-licensed 500MHz in the lower 6GHz band (5925–6425MHz) for licence-free Wi-Fi use.
  • Low-power indoor devices can operate up to 30dBm, while very low-power outdoor devices are capped at 14dBm.
  • The band cannot be used on vehicles, boats, oil platforms, or drones with exceptions only for aircraft above 10,000 feet.
(Photo by Dreamlike Street on Unsplash)
(Photo by Dreamlike Street on Unsplash)

The Indian government has officially permitted licence-free use of the lower 6GHz spectrum band. This will significantly improve indoor Wi-Fi speeds and accelerate the adoption of next-generation wireless standards such as Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7.

The decision was notified by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on January 20 and allows low-power indoor and very low-power outdoor wireless systems to operate without a licence in the 5925–6425MHz frequency range.

This development follows months of discussions and disagreements between telecom operators and technology companies over how the 6GHz spectrum should be utilised.

500MHz of 6GHz Spectrum De-licensed for Wi-Fi

The DoT has issued the “Low Power and Very Low Power Wireless Access System Rules, 2026,” under which 500MHz of spectrum in the lower 6GHz band has been de-licensed.

As per the notification, Wi-Fi and radio local area network equipment can be deployed without a licence as long as the devices function on a shared, non-exclusive basis and adhere to defined technical standards related to power output, emissions, and bandwidth.

Low-power indoor devices will be allowed to operate at a maximum equivalent isotropic radiated power of 30dBm, while very low-power outdoor devices will be capped at 14dBm.

According to the government, these limits are designed to deliver faster Wi-Fi performance while avoiding interference with licensed services, including satellite communications and backhaul networks. Devices operating in this band must use contention-based protocols and integrated antennas that meet approved technical standards.

Usage Restrictions and Interference Safeguards Outlined

The notification also introduces several operational restrictions to minimise interference. Indoor use of the lower 6GHz band is not permitted on land vehicles, boats, or aircraft, except when aircraft are flying above 10,000 feet. The use of this spectrum on oil platforms has been prohibited, and communication with or control of drones and unmanned aerial systems is not allowed.

In addition, strict out-of-band emission limits have been specified to further protect existing licensed services operating in adjacent frequency bands.

The decision comes nearly six months after the government released a draft proposal in May 2025 to open up the lower 6GHz band. It also follows sustained lobbying by technology companies, which argued that current Wi-Fi networks are unable to fully extend the capacity of fibre broadband and 5G services indoors.

Global technology firms including Apple, Amazon, Cisco, Meta, HP, and Intel have been advocating for the de-licensing of the entire 6GHz band for Wi-Fi use. On the other hand, Reliance Jio has maintained that the full 6GHz spectrum should be auctioned for mobile services.

FAQs

Q1. What has the Indian government announced regarding the 6GHz spectrum?

Answer. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has de-licensed 500MHz in the lower 6GHz band (5925–6425MHz), allowing licence-free use for low-power indoor and very low-power outdoor Wi-Fi systems.

Q2. What are the power limits for devices using the lower 6GHz band?

Answer. Indoor devices can operate at a maximum of 30dBm, while very low-power outdoor devices are capped at 14dBm, with strict technical standards to avoid interference.

Q3. Are there restrictions on where this spectrum can be used?

Answer. Yes. It cannot be used on land vehicles, boats, oil platforms, or drones. Aircraft use is only permitted above 10,000 feet, and strict emission limits apply to protect licensed services.

Deepinder Goyal, founder and Group CEO of Eternal, the parent company of Zomato and Blinkit, has announced that he is stepping away from the top executive role. Goyal said the responsibilities of leading a listed company no longer allow him the freedom to pursue the kind of high-risk ideas he is increasingly interested in exploring.

In a letter addressed to shareholders and shared on social media, Goyal revealed that he will transition to the role of Vice Chairman, subject to shareholder approval. Taking over as the new Group CEO of Eternal will be Albinder Dhindsa, who currently leads the company’s quick commerce arm, Blinkit.

Following the announcement, Eternal’s shares closed at Rs 283.40 on the BSE on Wednesday, marking a gain of 4.98%.

Why Deepinder Goyal Is Stepping Aside?

Explaining his decision, Goyal said he wants to focus on ideas that involve “significantly higher-risk exploration and experimentation.” He clarified that these initiatives fall outside Eternal’s strategic priorities and risk framework and are therefore better pursued independently of a public company.

“If these ideas belonged inside Eternal’s strategic scope, I would have pursued them within the company. They do not,” Goyal wrote in his letter.

He added that while he personally has the capacity to manage multiple responsibilities, the legal and governance expectations that come with being the CEO of a publicly listed company in India require complete and undivided attention.

According to Goyal, the leadership transition will allow Eternal to remain focused and disciplined. At the same time, it will give him the flexibility to work on projects beyond the company’s defined business scope.

Albinder Dhindsa will now take charge as Eternal’s Group CEO with the operational “centre of gravity” shifting to him. Dhindsa will oversee daily execution, business priorities, and key decision-making across the group.

Highlighting Dhindsa’s track record, Goyal noted, “Blinkit’s journey from acquisition to breakeven happened under his leadership.” He described him as a “battle-hardened founder” with a stronger execution focus. Blinkit will continue to be Eternal’s primary growth driver and Dhindsa’s main area of attention.

Goyal emphasised that he is not exiting the company. In his new role, he will remain closely involved in shaping long-term strategy, company culture, leadership development, and governance. He also stated that his financial future remains closely linked to Eternal.

As part of the transition, Goyal said all of his unvested ESOPs will be returned to the ESOP pool. This move, he explained, is intended to help create wealth for the next generation of leaders without increasing dilution for existing shareholders.

“Eternal remains my life’s work,” Goyal wrote, adding that his long-term vision is for the company to become India’s most valuable firm, serve a billion customers, and generate livelihoods for millions.

He described the leadership change as a shift in title rather than a reduction in commitment.

The announcement also comes at a time of strong financial performance for the group. Eternal reported a 73% rise in quarterly profit. Blinkit, meanwhile, posted adjusted core earnings of 40 million rupees, compared with a loss of 1.56 billion rupees in the previous quarter.

FAQs

Q1. Why did Deepinder Goyal step down as Eternal’s Group CEO?

Answer. Goyal said leading a listed company limits his ability to pursue high-risk, experimental ideas outside Eternal’s strategic priorities. He will now serve as Vice Chairman.

Q2. Who is taking over as Eternal’s new Group CEO?

Answer. Albinder Dhindsa, head of Blinkit, will become Eternal’s Group CEO. He will oversee daily execution, business priorities, and decision-making across the group.

Q3. How will Deepinder Goyal remain involved with Eternal?

Answer. Goyal emphasised he is not exiting the company. As Vice Chairman, he will focus on long-term strategy, culture, leadership development, and governance, while returning his unvested ESOPs to support future leaders.

Netflix Plans Vertical Video Feed and Major App Redesign

Highlights

  • Netflix plans a major mobile app redesign in late 2026.
  • It might feature swipeable vertical video feeds similar to TikTok and Instagram Reels, aimed at boosting engagement.

Netflix is all set to take on video streaming platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram that continue to dominate how users watch content on smartphones. During its fourth-quarter earnings call recently, the streaming giant announced plans to expand its short-form video feature and roll out a redesigned mobile app.

As for financials, Netflix reported revenue of $45.2 billion in 2025, with more than $1.5 billion coming from advertising. The company also crossed 325 million paid subscribers globally in the fourth quarter, underscoring its continued scale even as competition intensifies.

Coming to the possible app redesign, it is a move that could also help promote its newly launched original video podcasts. Here’s what we know about this so far.

Netflix Plans App Redesign

Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters confirmed that a refreshed version of the mobile app is slated to launch in late 2026. According to him, the redesign is aimed at supporting the company’s long-term growth by allowing continuous testing and optimisation of the app experience.

A key part of this revamp is the deeper integration of vertical videos.

Netflix has been testing this feature since late May. The new system will allow clips whether from movies, shows, or other content to appear in a swipeable vertical format, similar to Instagram Reels or TikTok videos.

Speaking during the earnings call, Peters said, “You can imagine us bringing more clips based on new content types, like video podcasts.” It suggests that Netflix sees short, swipeable videos as an effective way to attract users and keep them engaged on the platform for longer.

Netflix is also pushing into the video podcast space, a segment traditionally dominated by YouTube. The company recently launched its first video podcasts in partnership with well-known personalities such as Michael Irvin and Pete Davidson. It is also collaborating with major podcast industry players like Spotify and iHeartMedia.

Netflix says this effort is designed to improve content discovery and encourage deeper engagement, mirroring how users interact with social platforms.

However, Netflix insists this experiment is not about copying rivals. CTO Elizabeth Stone, speaking at the TechCrunch conference, said the vertical video feature is still in the testing phase and is focused on improving entertainment discovery through mobile-first innovation, rather than replicating TikTok’s model.

Co-CEO Ted Sarandos also addressed the broader shift in the entertainment landscape during the results call. He noted that streaming platforms are now competing with the entire entertainment ecosystem, not just each other.

“There’s never been more competition for creators, for consumer attention, for advertising and subscription dollars, and the competitive lines around TV consumption are already blurring. TV is not what we grew up on. TV is now just about everything. The Oscars and the NFL are on YouTube…Apple’s competing for Emmys and Oscars, and Instagram is coming next,” Sarandos said.

Sarandos further pointed out that Netflix has been rethinking its movie strategy as well including changes to its theatrical release approach. This reflects how the company is adapting to the increasingly blurred lines between social media, streaming, and traditional film experiences.

FAQs
