According to multiple media reports, Gmail users are now facing a new threat in which AI is being used to drive phishing attacks. Hackers are now adopting machine learning technology to generate emails that look similar to authentic communications.

These emails are convincing and can put billions of Gmail users at risk. Here’s everything we know about the latest Gmail scams –

What Are AI-Generated Phishing Emails Harder to Detect?

Firstly, AI-generated phishing emails usually have a lot of personal information including the receiver’s name, address or sometimes even details from past interactions. All this works in making the email seem highly authentic.

The attackers usually create the emails in such a way that receivers click on malicious links or share sensitive information. This includes leaking login credentials or payment details as well.

What makes this attack even more dangerous is the addition of fake phone calls from Google Assistant.

The caller often claims the call is from Google. Moreover, you may also receive a follow-up email that will look and sound genuine.

Here are some warning signs to look out for in email –

  • You receive a Google account recovery notification that you didn’t initiate.
  • Google doesn’t contact users directly unless you have a Google Business Profile, so unsolicited calls are suspicious.
  • The email you receive may have a “To” address that isn’t connected to a Google domain.
  • Check your account for any unusual active sessions—there should be none apart from your own.
  • Email headers might show how the email was spoofed, so it’s important to review them carefully.
  • Reverse searching the number may reveal others who received similar scam calls.

How to Protect Yourself from AI-Powered Phishing Emails?

  • Be wary of requests for personal information: Legitimate companies will never ask for sensitive information like passwords or credit card details via email.
  • Verify the sender’s email address: Even small changes in the email address can indicate a phishing attempt.
  • Check links before clicking: Hover over links to see where they lead. If it looks suspicious or unfamiliar, don’t click.
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): Adding this extra security step makes it harder for hackers to access your account, even if they have your password.
  • Keep your software up to date: Regularly updating your antivirus, browser, and operating system helps protect against potential vulnerabilities.

You can save yourself from AI-powered phishing emails by staying alert and following the above-mentioned tips.

Moreover, always be cautious when receiving unexpected calls or emails, especially those asking for personal details.

CERT-In Advisory Android & Chrome

Meanwhile, in two recent advisories number CIVN-2024-0319 and CIVN-2024-0318, CERT-In highlighted multiple high-severity vulnerabilities in Google Chrome and Android operating systems.

These vulnerabilities expose millions of Android and Gmail users to cyberattacks enabling cybercriminals to execute arbitrary codes.

Online “Digital Arrest” Scam: How Scammers Are Duping People?

Recently, there has been a noticeable rise in a new scam known as the “Digital Arrest” scam.

This is where fraudsters pose as government officials to scare people into sharing financial or personal information and scam for money. Here are some recent incidents.

Scammers Pretending to Be Government Officials

A man in New Delhi recently fell victim to the digital arrest scam. He lost nearly Rs. 6 lakhs.

The scammers pretended to be from the Department of Telecommunications contacted him and falsely linked his phone number to illegal activities. They even transferred the call to another scammer posing as an official from Mumbai Crime Department.

In a similar case, a retired university professor was duped out of Rs. 75 lakhs. The scammers pretending officers from the Enforcement Directorate.

These scams are part of a larger trend where fraudsters use intimidation and fear to trick people into giving away their money.

How Do Digital Arrest Scammers Operate?

What makes this recently popular Digital Arrest scam so effective is how well-prepared the scammers are.

The scammers use rehearsed scripts and create convincing setups including showing fake police stations on video calls. All this makes the experience seem more real.

Scammers also use the publicly available information. This includes phone numbers and bank account details, which makes it convincing for people to believe they are from real authorities.

Protecting Yourself from the Digital Arrest Scam

The important thing is to stay informed about current fraud tactics if want to stay safe from these types of scams.

It is often advised to look out for official government statements that can clarify such situations.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) even issued a statement earlier this year warning people about scammers threatening to disconnect their mobile numbers or claim they are linked to criminal activities.

Tip to protect yourself –

  • Avoid answering unknown calls especially those from foreign country codes.
  • Hang up immediately and block the number if you hear a pre-recorded message about deactivating your phone number.
  • Never share personal details like your email ID, alternative phone numbers, or birthdate.
  • Never share financial information like account or credit card numbers over the phone with anyone even if they claim to be from the bank.
  • By staying cautious and informed, you can avoid falling prey to these scams and keep your personal information safe.

How to Unlock Maximum Fast Charging on Xiaomi Phones?

0

Highlights

  • Xiaomi puts a limit on fast charging speed by default to protect battery health.
  • Users can unlock the full potential of fast charging via hidden settings.
  • Regular use of maximum fast charging can shorten battery life.

Almost all Xiaomi smartphones today come equipped with impressive fast charging speeds.

However, the company limits the charging speed by default in order to protect the battery’s health. Have you ever wondered if your Xiaomi phone can actually charge faster than it currently does?

Well, there is always no harm in exploring the maximum fast charging capacity for your Xiaomi phones if you can.

It can be helpful in situations when you need to quickly charge your device and have a really short time in hand.

In this post, we are sharing a step-by-step guide on how to charge your Xiaomi phone faster.

Once you go through this post, you will know every detail of how you can unlock the full potential of fast charging with just a few simple steps.

Unlock Maximum Fast Charging on Xiaomi Phones

First of all, you will need an app called HyperOS Downloader to unlock your Xiaomi phone’s fastest charging capabilities.

This app is available for free and helps you access hidden system settings. It also provides information about the updates on your device.

The easy steps to enable the highest fast charging speeds are as follows –

image
HypeOS Downloader App (Image credit – XiaomiTime)
  • First, download and install the HyperOS Downloader app on your Xiaomi phone.
  • Once the app is installed, open it and scroll to the bottom of the screen.
image

  • Tap on the “Hidden Settings” option and you can adjust several system preferences.
  • In the “Hidden settings,” look for the option named “Boost Charging Speed.”
  • Tap on Boost Charging Speed and you’ll be directed to a new menu.
  • Once the new menu pops on the screen, you’ll need to enable the “Increase charging speed” option.

Once you enable this setting, your Xiaomi phone will unlock its maximum fast charging capacity.

If you’re experiencing slower-than-expected charging speeds, a simple restart of your Xiaomi smartphone may help resolve the issue.

It is important to note that fast charging speed completely depends on the model of the phone. Whether your device supports 120W, 67W or any other charging speed. When you enable the settings, it will allow you to use the highest possible speed.

Why Does Xiaomi Limit Charging Speeds?

Most Xiaomi smartphones come equipped with fast charging technology, but it may not be enabled by default.

Xiaomi always puts a limit on the maximum charging speed of Xiaomi phones by default. This is usually done to make sure the battery’s health remains good for a longer period of time.

Regular smartphone users should note that high-speed charging often generates extra heat inside the device. This can eventually impact battery performance with time.

The phone avoids unnecessary strain during everyday use by limiting the charging speed.

When to Use Maximum Fast Charging?

When it comes to charging your smartphone, using a wall socket with the dedicated charger provided by the manufacturer is generally the faster.

It can be really helpful to unlock maximum fast charging during situations where you need a quick power boost. The fast charging feature surely gives you a quick and convenient solution.

However, it is important to use this option cautiously.

If you start charging your Xiaomi phone regularly at full speed, it can shorten the battery’s life over time.

Q4.How is the design of realme narzo 70 turbo 5G?

Answer. The “eye-catching Motorsport-inspired design” of Realme Narzo 70 Turbo is exactly that – eye-catching.

We had the Turbo Green colour variant for this review and it is something that we never go unnoticed in your hands. The phone is lightweight and slim, which adds to the overall ease of handling. This is also a plus for gamers to get a comfortable gaming experience.

The back of the phone is shiny and changes colour when tilted in different directions. The finish is smooth. We especially loved the camera module, which is both neat and not intruding at all. The steel frame around the camera phone looks stylish.

It comes with something called 2.8D equal-depth micro-curve design. This gives the back cover of the phone curved edges that merge with the middle frame smoothly.

It comes with an IP65 rating, so you can wave off some worry for dust & water splashes.

Overall, we loved the design of the phone. As for colour options, in case the Turbo Green is not something you instantly like, Realme is also releasing Turbo Yellow and Turbo Purple colours that are worth checking out.

Q5.What is exceptional about the display of realme narzo 70 turbo ?

Answer. The colour reproduction is fantastic though. With 16.7 million colours and a 106% NTSC colour gamut, it brings everything to life. Again an advantage for gamers.

The Pro-XDR display technology also enhances the visual quality. It makes images and videos look more detailed.

As for durability, the screen is protected by AG DT Star 2 glass and has a Protective Film Touch.

Q6.How is the battery life of realme narzo 70 turbo 5G?

Answer. The Realme Narzo 70 Turbo 5G is packed with a 5000mAh battery and 45W ultra-fast charging. To be honest, this is basic for a decently good gaming phone. But Realme works well with these specifications.

On a full charge, the phone easily supports up to 9 hours of continuous use or even hours of heavy gameplay. It is one last tickmark that makes it ideal for gamers.

The plus point here is you can get up to 1.7 hours of gameplay with just a quick 10-minute charge — perfect for those last-minute gaming sessions.

Realme also built in 38 safety protections like overvoltage and overcurrent protection, ensuring the battery is safe and reliable. Even after 1600 full charge cycles, the battery still retains 80% capacity. This mainly means it is durable for up to 4 years, which is great for long-term use.

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Pushes for Auction of Satellite Spectrum Amid Competition with Elon Musk’s Starlink

  • This opposes the administrative allocation suggested by TRAI.

Reliance is reportedly pushing for a spectrum auction for home satellite broadband instead of a government allocation.

The reports are coming after the telecom regulator suggested that the spectrum for home satellite broadband should be allocated by the government and not auctioned.

This is now being looked at as a clash between Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance and Elon Musk’s Starlink.

The controversy over how to allocate spectrum for satellite services in India has been brewing since last year.

Many global giants such as Musk’s Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper have supported the idea of administrative allocation. However, it is now clear that home-grown Reliance is advocating for an auction-based process.

The issue is about how we interpret Indian laws.

According to a recent Reuters report, some experts believe that the spectrum allocation of last aligns with what Musk has been proposing. However, Reliance has continuously maintained that there are no existing provisions for satellite broadband services.

As per a Business Today report, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is currently conducting a public consultation on the matter.

Reliance has called for the process to be restarted in a private letter dated October 10. The home-grown conglomerate claimed that TRAI has pre-emptively interpreted the situation in favour of allocation.

“TRAI seems to have concluded, without any basis, that spectrum assignment should be administrative,” wrote Kapoor Singh Guliani Reliance’s senior regulatory affairs official, in a letter to Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

On the other hand, the TRAI consultation paper suggested that Indian laws mandate administrative allocation of spectrum. A senior TRAI official reportedly stated that a due process is being followed. The official also encouraged Reliance to submit its feedback during the consultation period.

The outcome of TRAI’s recommendations will play a major role in shaping the government’s decision on spectrum allocation.

Reliance’s letter to Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has not been made public.

Deloitte predicts that India’s satellite broadband market could grow by 36% annually. This has the potential to reach $1.9 billion by 2030.

Meanwhile, Musk’s Starlink is eager to launch in India, but unresolved issues around spectrum allocation are slowing progress.

Starlink favours administrative licensing and have argued that it’s in line with global practices. On the other hand, Reliance insists that auctions are critical to maintaining a level playing field, especially as foreign competitors may enter the Indian voice and data services market.

Reliance Jio currently leads the telecom sector in India with 480 million users.

Reliance has written a formal request to Minister Scindia on auctioning the satellite spectrum.

It also suggested reissuing TRAI’s consultation paper to ensure fair competition between satellite communications and traditional networks.

Jio has highlighted that several global satellite constellations including Starlink and Amazon Kuiper are seeking spectrum and market access in India. These companies aim to offer services that could compete directly with traditional mobile and fixed wireless networks.

“Given that terrestrial networks acquire spectrum through auctions for mobile and fixed wireless access, a fair and transparent auction system for satellite services is essential for level competition,” Jio stated.

This letter follows an earlier request to TRAI chairman AK Lahoti, in which Jio sought revisions to the consultation paper on spectrum pricing, arguing that the issue of a level playing field has been overlooked.

The Broadband India Forum (BIF), whose members include OneWeb and Amazon, dismissed Jio’s concerns, claiming that the call for a level playing field reflects a misunderstanding of both technology and the law.

In its recent letter, Jio pointed out that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had previously referenced the need for fairness when consulting TRAI. However, Jio feels that the regulator has not addressed this vital issue.

“We respectfully request your intervention so TRAI addresses these issues in its consultation paper and ensures that its recommendations on spectrum assignment uphold fairness, transparency, and competition as mandated by the Telecommunications Act and Supreme Court rulings,” Jio urged.

Jio also noted that the DoT has not specified a method for spectrum assignment, leaving the issue open for discussion under Section 4 of the Telecommunications Act.

“TRAI seems to have concluded, without any basis, that spectrum assignment should be administrative and based on a ‘first-come, first-served’ approach,” Jio stated.

FAQs

Q1. What does Reliance want for the home satellite broadband spectrum?

Answer. Reliance advocates for an auction-based process for satellite broadband spectrum, opposing the government’s preference for administrative allocation.

Q2. What is the purpose of TRAI’s public consultation on spectrum allocation?

Answer. TRAI is conducting a public consultation on spectrum allocation, and Reliance urges a restart, citing fairness and competition, particularly against foreign competitors.

Q3. What are Deloitte’s forecasts for India’s satellite broadband market?

Answer. Deloitte forecasts 36% annual growth for India’s satellite broadband market, potentially reaching $1.9 billion by 2030, highlighting the market’s significance.

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has recently ordered Amazon Retail India to refund ₹40,325 to the customer for selling a hacked phone.

As per a recent Times of India report, the hacked phone sold to an Amazon customer exposed customer data and was also used for making unauthorised purchases.

Moreover, the retail giant has been also fined a total of ₹18,000, which includes ₹10,000 to the complainant as compensation for mental agony and harassment and ₹8,000 as the cost of litigation.

The case happened with Amazon customer Sumita Das, a resident of Sector 12 in Chandigarh.

Das recently purchased a smartphone from the Amazon website but later discovered the delivered device was already hacked. She faced fraud and financial loss due to the hacked device.

The fraudsters managed to gain access to her personal information via the hacked phone in September 2023.

Some unauthorised purchases were also made from her Amazon account by the fraudsters.

Das has informed that the fraudsters also hacked her ICICI Bank credit card along with her email using her hacked phone.

She claimed that suspicious activities were immediately reported to Amazon. However, the company failed to any appropriate action in time and didn’t cancel the fraud transactions.

It was also reported that Amazon initially promised that a refund of the fraudulent transaction amount would be processed.

However, the e-commerce company later cancelled the refund and Das did not receive any amount back.

Meanwhile, Amazon India and Amazon Pay in their combined reply to the consumer court mentioned that they had cancelled the fraudulent orders. The company claimed that it provided “proper and efficient assistance” to the complainant. Amazon Pay is the platform used to make transaction payments on the Amazon retail website.

“Considering the complainant’s grievance that her account was hacked, we immediately checked internally and assisted the complainant with sanitising/suppressing her account and ensuring all orders were cancelled to avoid any further issues,” the statement added.

Das alleged, “The act of demand made it clear that amount has not been refunded by Amazon Retail India and Amazon Pay Later, and the amount collected has illegally been retained by them despite numerous requests for refund having been made.”

Amazon India and Amazon Pay Later, in their reply, reportedly said, “The complainant contacted our customer support team wherein all orders which were placed had been cancelled and proper and efficient assistance was provided to the complainant against the cancelled orders. Considering the complainant’s grievance that her account was hacked, they immediately checked internally and assisted the complainant with sanitising/suppressing her account and ensuring all orders were cancelled to avoid any further issues.”

“It is a general practice of online platforms that particularly a product before collection at the time of return is verified thoroughly by the collecting agent and the same is collected only after the same is found to be the same as the item delivered. In case of any difference, the product is never collected by the collecting agent. More so, this plea was never communicated at any stage to the complainant and seems an afterthought of Amazon Retail India,” the commission said.

“We are of the considered opinion that all the transactions of sale, collection of amount, ensuring delivery of a product, processing cancellation request, return request and refund of amount are controlled and managed by Amazon only. But in the present case, the act of Amazon for not properly handle the situation despite having complete knowledge of the suspicious activity and not taking prompt action on the complaint of the complainant and ignoring the genuine repeated requests of the complainant, and forcing her to indulge in the present litigation proves deficiency in service on their part,” ruled Singh.

However, the response failed to satisfy the consumer court.

The consumer court maintained that it should be a regular practice for any seller or agent who delivers products from any online platform to “thoroughly verify” the product before delivering it to the customer.

The court added that Amazon has clearly failed to “act promptly” even though they were made aware of the suspicious activity by the customer. The court, in the end, ruled in favour of the complainant in this matter.

FAQs

Q1. What did the Consumer court order when Amazon delivered a hacked phone?

Answer. The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ordered Amazon Retail India to refund ₹40,325 to the customer and fined Amazon ₹18,000, including ₹10,000 as compensation for mental agony and ₹8,000 as the cost of litigation.

Q2. What issues Sumita Das faced due to the hacked phone purchased from Amazon?

Answer. Sumita Das faced fraud and financial loss due to the hacked device. The fraudsters gained access to her personal information, made unauthorized purchases, and hacked her ICICI Bank credit card along with her email.

Q3.What was the allegation by Das & what was the reaction from amazon & commission?

Answer .Das alleged, “The act of demand made it clear that amount has not been refunded by Amazon Retail India and Amazon Pay Later, and the amount collected has illegally been retained by them despite numerous requests for refund having been made.”

Amazon India and Amazon Pay Later, in their reply, reportedly said, “The complainant contacted our customer support team wherein all orders which were placed had been cancelled and proper and efficient assistance was provided to the complainant against the cancelled orders. Earlier rumours suggested that the iPhone SE 4 might include an Action Button similar to the iPhone 15 Pro.

Apart from this, reports have already suggested that the upcoming iPhone SE will have a 6.1-inch OLED display, a powerful 48MP camera, USB-C and Face ID.

Mark Gurman last cited some internal sources to report that Apple is nearing production of an updated iPhone SE — codenamed V59.

The next iPhone SE is rumoured to feature the A18 chip. It is the same processor found in the latest iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.

This would bring significant performance improvements and support for Apple’s AI-driven features. The upcoming device is also expected to come with a 5G modem developed by Apple. This will potentially deliver faster network speeds.
