Apple is Upgrading Its C1 Modem with Faster mmWave 5G, Kuo Reports

0

Highlights

  • Apple is working on a refreshed C1 modem for next year to address its lack of mmWave 5G support.
  • The new version will include mmWave transceivers and front-end components using a 28nm node.
  • The iPhone 17 Air will use the C1 modem, while other iPhone 17 models will continue using Qualcomm’s 5G modem.

Apple recently joined the small group of companies making their own 5G modems. It introduced the Apple C1 Chip inside the iPhone 16e and while Apple highlighted its power efficiency, the modem has some key limitations. This makes Apple’s first in-house 5G modem unsuitable for higher-end iPhones. Here’s what we know.

Apple To Address C1 Chip’s Lack Of mmWave 5G

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Apple is already working on a “refreshed C1” for next year, which will address its biggest drawback of lack of mmWave support.

As of now, the C1 modem only supports sub-6GHz 5G. It features a baseband built on a 4nm or 5nm process, 7nm transceivers for low and intermediate frequencies and a 55nm Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC). While some expected Apple to move to a 3nm baseband in the next version, according to Kuo that’s unlikely since it wouldn’t significantly improve power efficiency.

Apple instead plans to add mmWave transceivers and front-end components using a 28nm node, allowing for much faster 5G speeds, at least in regions where mmWave is available. Kuo notes that making mmWave work isn’t difficult, but creating a modem that is both stable and power-efficient is a bigger challenge.

Kuo writes, “(improved chip) aims to improve power consumption and transmission speed and support for mmWave (including TRx and front-end components, built on a 28nm process). While supporting mmWave isn’t particularly challenging, achieving stable performance with low power consumption remains a key hurdle.”

Kuo previously reported that the iPhone 17 Air would use the C1 modem along with Apple’s in-house Wi-Fi chip. However, the rest of the iPhone 17 lineup will continue using Qualcomm’s 5G modem while switching to Apple’s Wi-Fi chip (Apple previously relied on Broadcom for this).

It’s unclear whether Apple’s existing agreements with Qualcomm or the lack of mmWave support will keep the C1 out of most iPhone 17 models. However, more iPhone 18 models could adopt the upgraded C1 modem next year. As for a next-generation Apple C2 modem, there’s no information on that yet.

FAQs

Q1. What is the major improvement planned for Apple’s C1 modem?

Answer. Apple is working on a refreshed C1 modem for next year, addressing its biggest drawback, the lack of mmWave support, allowing for faster 5G speeds.

Q2. What does the current C1 modem support, and how is the new version different?

Answer. The current C1 modem only supports sub-6GHz 5G and is built on a 4nm or 5nm process. The new version will include mmWave transceivers and front-end components using a 28nm node.

Q3. Which iPhone models will use the C1 modem?

Answer. The iPhone 17 Air will use the C1 modem, while the rest of the iPhone 17 lineup will continue using Qualcomm’s 5G modem. More iPhone 18 models could adopt the upgraded C1 modem next year.

WhatsApp for a while has been rolling out more AI-powered features to enhance user experiences. A new Beta report suggests that the app now allows users to generate profile pictures for group chats using artificial intelligence. Here’s what we know.

WhatsApp Adds AI-Generated Group Icons

Many users have been waiting for WhatsApp to introduce AI-generated personal profile pictures based on previous reports. However, a recent report from trusted WhatsApp Beta source WABetaInfo suggests this feature is already available for some Beta users but is limited to group chats.

For users who don’t have a suitable image for their group, this tool makes things easier. Instead of searching for or taking a new picture, they can simply describe what they want, and Meta AI will create a unique, customised group icon.

This is especially useful for themed groups, like those focused on futuristic tech, fantasy, or abstract concepts, where regular images might not fully capture the group’s essence.

The feature is already appearing for some users who have installed the latest stable version of WhatsApp from the Google Play Store. Since WhatsApp has officially confirmed the rollout, it seems this update will be available to more users soon.

A More User-Friendly Meta AI Interface

Meanwhile, some reports have revealed that WhatsApp is also working on a more streamlined Meta AI interface for a future update. The new design will include a cleaner layout and quick-access tools such as a dedicated button for photo sharing.

One major improvement is that Meta AI will start listening to voice input instantly when accessed from the Chats tab. Users won’t need to tap a microphone button manually, making interactions smoother.

To ensure transparency, iOS will display a privacy indicator whenever Meta AI is actively listening, similar to how Android handles it. This ensures users always know when their voice input is being processed and prevents unintended background activity. This update will make voice interactions on WhatsApp faster and more intuitive, keeping essential tools within easy reach.

FAQs

Q1. What is the new AI-powered feature in WhatsApp for group chats?

Answer. WhatsApp now allows users to generate profile pictures for group chats using artificial intelligence by describing what they want, creating unique, customized group icons.

Q2. Is the AI-generated group icons feature available to all WhatsApp users?

Answer. No, the feature is currently available to some Beta users who have installed the latest stable version from the Google Play Store. More users will receive it soon.

Q3. What improvements are being made to WhatsApp’s Meta AI interface?

Answer. WhatsApp is working on a more user-friendly Meta AI interface, including a cleaner layout, instant voice input, quick-access tools and a privacy indicator for voice input on iOS.

Kuo: Apple’s First Foldable iPhone To Have Crease-Free Display, No Face ID and a $2000+ Price Tag

Highlights

  • Analyst Kuo reports that the foldable iPhone is expected to cost well over $2000, making it one of the most expensive iPhones ever.
  • It will reportedly have a crease-free display and will be ultra-thin, measuring 4.5mm unfolded, and 9.5mm when folded.

We have been hearing about the foldable iPhone for a while now and all recent reports suggest Apple is preparing to launch its first foldable iPhone in 2026. Now popular analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has predicted that it will be a premium, high-end device with a hefty price tag.

Kuo recently shared a detailed post titled “Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Predictions: Market Positioning, Hardware Specs, Development Schedule, and Shipment Estimates.” Here’s a quick roundup of Kuo’s latest prediction.

Apple’s Foldable iPhone – What to Expect?

According to Kuo, the future foldable iPhone is expected to cost well over $2000, making it one of the most expensive iPhones ever. However, Apple is packing in some top-tier hardware to justify the price.

One of the biggest highlights will be the display, which is said to be completely crease-free when folded, a feature that sets it apart from most existing foldables. The device will also be ultra-thin, measuring just 4.5mm when unfolded and 9.5mm when folded.

While not the thinnest foldable ever, it’s significantly slimmer than many of today’s popular models. Apple is reportedly using a stainless steel and titanium alloy hinge, ensuring durability and a sleek design.

Kuo further predicts that Apple will bring back Touch ID, integrating it into a capacitive side button, similar to the iPad Air. This would make it the first foldable iPhone without a home button to feature fingerprint recognition instead of Face ID.

The foldable iPhone is expected to follow a book-style design, featuring a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer screen. When unfolded, the screen size would be similar to that of an iPad mini. In terms of cameras, the device is rumoured to have a front-facing camera that works in both folded and unfolded modes and a dual-lens rear camera setup.

Apple is expected to finalise the design soon, with mass production beginning in late 2025. Due to the complexity of manufacturing, only 3 to 5 million units are likely to be available in 2026. Sales could reach 20 million by 2027, factoring in a second-generation model that is expected to arrive in the latter half of that year.

In addition to the foldable iPhone, Apple is also believed to be working on a foldable MacBook or iPad with an 18-inch display using the same invisible crease technology.

Q1. How much is Apple’s first foldable iPhone expected to cost?

Answer. Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to cost well over $2000, making it one of the most expensive iPhones ever.

Q2. What are the expected design features of the foldable iPhone?

Q3. When is Apple’s foldable iPhone expected to be launched?

Answer. Apple’s foldable iPhone is expected to launch in 2026 with mass production starting in late 2025.

[…] Don’t forget to keep your Shazam History safe and in sync between your devices. To do this, turn on iCloud sync in Shazam Settings,” Apple adds.

To update your synced songs, simply toggle “Sync your songs” off and on in Shazam settings. If you’re using Spotify, you may need to reopen the app for the playlist to refresh.
