Samsung Begins Testing One UI 8 Based On Android 16 – Features, Release Date and More

  • Samsung has already started testing One UI 8 based on Android 16.
  • The first build for the Galaxy S25 series was spotted on Samsung’s firmware servers.

  • Google plans to release Android 16 in June 2025 with smartphone manufacturers potentially rolling out updates by August.

While One UI 7 built on Android 15 hasn’t even been released yet despite months of testing, Samsung has already started testing One UI 8 based on Android 16. Google is expected to release Android 16 in June this year.

We’re hoping Samsung moves faster with One UI 8 than it did with the previous update, but there are no guarantees. The fact that internal testing has already begun is promising, but it doesn’t necessarily mean an earlier release.

The first One UI 8 build for the Galaxy S25 series was spotted on Samsung’s firmware servers recently. Samsung has reportedly started development two months earlier than usual.

Android 16 – Features, Release Date and More

Google introduced Android 15 in August last year, but with many devices still waiting for that update, the company is already working on Android 16. Here’s what to expect from the next big Android release.

Like recent Android versions, Android 16 is expected to be more of an incremental upgrade rather than a major UI overhaul. That said, it will bring some much-anticipated features.

Live Updates

One of the biggest additions is Live Updates, a feature that lets you pin important notifications for easy access. Similar to Apple’s Live Activities, it will show notification progress on the status bar, lock screen and Always-On Display.

However, it’s unclear if it will work with all apps or just a few select ones.

Lock Screen Widgets

image
Google expected to bring lock screen widgets with One UI 8. (Image credit – GSMArena)

Google is also bringing back lock screen widgets, something Android had nearly a decade ago but later removed. While this feature is already available on tablets, it is expected to arrive on smartphones with Android 16 QPR1 later in 2025.

Currently, the Pixel Tablet is the only device with lock screen widgets, but Google has promised to expand support to more devices shortly after Android 16 launches.

Lock screen widgets will be available in AOSP for tablets and mobile starting with the release after Android 16 (QPR1). This update is scheduled to be pushed to AOSP in late Summer 2025. Lock screen widgets are already available on Pixel Tablets,” mentions the Android Developers Blog.

Android Authority discovered that while tablets require a swipe-right gesture to access widgets, smartphones will need to enable Android screensaver mode, which only works when the device is charging or docked.

Security and Accessibility Improvements

With phone scams and cyber threats on the rise, Google is tightening security in Android 16. A new feature will automatically disable sideloading of apps and accessibility services during active phone calls, one of the techniques often used by hackers to take control of devices.

Another interesting addition is Motion Cues, designed to reduce motion sickness when using a phone in a moving vehicle. Similar to Apple’s Vehicle Motion Cues in iOS 18, it will display animated black dots along the screen edges that mimic the movement of the vehicle to help reduce sensory conflict between what users see and feel.

Apart from these, Android 16 will also introduce a redesigned settings homepage, a new volume slider, compact heads-up notifications and other under-the-hood optimisations.

Android 16 Release Timeline

Google released the first Android 16 Developer Preview in November last year, followed by two beta versions. According to Google’s President of the Android Ecosystem, the company is on track to meet its June 2025 deadline. If things go as planned, smartphone manufacturers could start rolling out Android 16 updates by August.

With Samsung already testing One UI 8, there’s hope that the company might speed up its update process this time around.

FAQs

Q1. What is Samsung currently testing in relation to One UI and Android?

Answer. Samsung has already started testing One UI 8 based on Android 16. The first One UI 8 build for the Galaxy S25 series was spotted on Samsung’s firmware servers.

Q2. What are some of the anticipated features of Android 16?

Answer. Android 16 will bring Live Updates, lock screen widgets, and security improvements among other features. Live Updates will let you pin important notifications for easy access, and lock screen widgets are expected to return to smartphones with Android 16 QPR1.

Q3. When is Android 16 expected to be released and rolled out?

Answer. Google plans to release Android 16 in June 2025, with smartphone manufacturers potentially rolling out updates by August. Samsung’s early testing suggests a faster update process this time around.

Apple Delays More Advanced Siri Update Amid Rumoured Internal Challenges

Highlights

  • Apple announced a delay in its advanced Siri features rollout.
  • Reports indicate internal struggles and slow progress in developing the new Siri features
  • Some Apple employees reportedly pushing for leadership changes in the AI division.

Apple has confirmed that its highly anticipated Apple Intelligence updates for Siri will take longer than expected. In a statement to Daring Fireball, the company said it now expects to roll out “a more personalised Siri” sometime “in the coming year.”

Apple spokeswoman Jacqueline Roy explained the delay in the statement, saying, “Siri helps our users find what they need and get things done quickly, and in just the past six months, we’ve made Siri more conversational, introduced new features like type to Siri and product knowledge, and added an integration with ChatGPT. We’ve also been working on a more personalized Siri, giving it more awareness of your personal context, as well as the ability to take action for you within and across your apps. It’s going to take us longer than we thought to deliver on these features, and we anticipate rolling them out in the coming year.”

Bloomberg Report Reveals Details of Delay

According to a new Bloomberg report, Apple’s delay is tied to internal struggles with the new Siri features. The report states that Craig Federighi, Apple’s head of software, had “strong concerns that the features didn’t work properly” when he tested them.

Initially, Apple planned to launch the updated Siri with iOS 18.4, but delays pushed the release to iOS 18.5, expected in May. Since then, engineers have been scrambling to fix various issues, but progress has been slow. Sources told Bloomberg that the features may not be ready until “next year at the earliest.” Some within Apple’s AI team are even questioning whether they should be scrapped entirely.

The report reads, “In the lead-up to the latest delay, software chief Craig Federighi and other executives voiced strong concerns internally that the features didn’t work properly — or as advertised — in their personal testing, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing internal matters.”

“Some within Apple’s AI division believe that work on the features could be scrapped altogether, and that Apple may have to rebuild the functions from scratch. The capabilities would then be delayed until a next-generation Siri that Apple hopes to begin rolling out in 2026,” the report further adds.

This isn’t the only Siri-related setback. A separate report earlier this week revealed delays for a more conversational Siri in iOS 19.

With these delays piling up, some Apple employees are reportedly questioning whether CEO Tim Cook or the company’s board should make leadership changes in the AI division. John Giannandrea, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy, has led the company’s AI efforts since joining from Google in 2018. However, some employees believe that without leadership changes, Apple risks falling further behind in AI development.

“[…] Apple employees are questioning whether Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook or the company’s board needs to take action to change the leadership of the AI group. They believe that, short of major changes, Apple will continue to fall behind. Earlier this year, the company tapped veteran software leader Kim Vorrath to help the team, the report adds.

What Apple Promised at WWDC Last Year?

Apple promised an advanced version of Siri when it first showcased all the Apple Intelligence features at WWDC 2025.

At the unveiling of Apple Intelligence, Apple announced, “Awareness of your personal context enables Siri to help you in ways that are unique to you. Can’t remember if a friend shared that recipe with you in a note, a text, or an email? Need your passport number while booking a flight? Siri can use its knowledge of the information on your device to help find what you’re looking for, without compromising your privacy.”

It also added, “Apple Intelligence empowers Siri with onscreen awareness, so it can understand and take action with things on your screen. If a friend texts you their new address, you can say “Add this address to their contact card,” and Siri will take care of it.”

The in-app actions will, “Seamlessly take action in and across apps with Siri. You can make a request like “Send the email I drafted to April and Lilly” and Siri knows which email you’re referencing and which app it’s in. And Siri can take actions across apps, so after you ask Siri to enhance a photo for you by saying “Make this photo pop,” you can ask Siri to drop it in a specific note in the Notes app — without lifting a finger.”

India’s quick commerce giants Swiggy Instamart, Zepto and Zomato-owned Blinkit are facing an antitrust complaint from the All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF). The complaint alleges that these companies’ deep discounting practices are harming smaller brick-and-mortar retailers.

What’s The AICPDF Complaint About?

AICPDF, representing around four lakh FMCG distributors and 13 million retailers, has asked authorities to investigate how quick commerce companies are offering such heavy discounts. According to a recent Reuters report, the complaint specifies that smaller physical retail stores cannot compete with these low prices, putting their businesses at risk.

The complaint was first filed with the Commerce Ministry in October last year, later forwarded to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and eventually escalated to the Competition Commission of India (CCI).

The CCI has now asked AICPDF to file a direct complaint, after which it will decide whether to launch an official investigation or dismiss the case. This process could take several months.

A separate Money Control report reveals that the complaint was first filed with the Commerce Ministry in October last year, later forwarded to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), and eventually escalated to the Competition Commission of India (CCI). The CCI has now asked AICPDF to file a direct complaint, after which it will decide whether to launch an official investigation or dismiss the case. This process could take several months.

This isn’t AICPDF’s first complaint against quick commerce companies. Earlier, it raised concerns with the Commerce Ministry about FMCG companies selling near-expiry and slow-moving products through online platforms. The organisation warned that this practice not only hurts small and medium-sized businesses but also poses a risk to consumer safety, reveals another Money Control report.

This case comes at a time when the CCI is already investigating Swiggy and Zomato for allegedly violating competition laws by favouring select restaurants on their platforms.

Q3. What other investigations is the CCI conducting related to quick commerce companies?

After the grand unveiling of Honor’s Alpha Plan at the recently concluded MWC 2025, we are not getting multiple reports about Honor’s future devices. Here’s a quick roundup of recent leaks and speculations on what Honor seems to be working on.

Honor’s 1-Inch Sensor for Magic8 RSR Porsche Design

According to a recent post of leakster Smart Pikachu on Weibo, Honor’s upcoming Magic8 series is set to include models ranging from 6.3 inches to 6.8 inches. The most exciting part is that Magic8 RSR Porsche Design is rumored to feature a 1-inch camera sensor developed in-house.

The Magic8 RSR will reportedly pair this 1-inch sensor with a variable aperture lens, allowing it to let in more light in low-light conditions while adjusting for bright daylight shots.

What’s still unclear is why Honor decided to develop its own sensor instead of using one from Sony, Samsung or OmniVision. It has something unique in mind that existing sensors couldn’t offer?

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a smartphone brand making its own sensor. Earlier rumours suggested Huawei was developing a custom sensor for the Pura 70 series, but it ultimately used Sony and OmniVision sensors instead. It’ll be interesting to see if Honor succeeds where its former parent company didn’t.

As of now, the custom sensor will only be available on the premium Magic8 RSR model, but if it performs well and production costs go down, it could eventually make its way into future Honor flagships.

Honor – A ‘Mini’ Flagship and an Ultra-Thin Phone

Honor seems to be exploring two major trends in the smartphone industry, which are ultra-thin phones and compact flagships.

According to leaker Digital Chat Station, Honor has started working on an ultra-thin phone, though details are scarce. Given the company’s success with the Magic V3 foldable, we can expect a sleek and well-designed device when it finally arrives.

Meanwhile, Honor is also rumoured to be developing a smaller-sized flagship, possibly under the codename “Yaozi” (loosely translates to “glory,” which is also another term for Honor). The device is expected to feature a 6.3-inch display, which is not exactly mini by traditional standards but noticeably smaller than the 6.8-inch Magic7 Pro.

There’s no word yet on the launch timeline for these devices, but Honor’s lineup is definitely shaping up to be exciting.

Apple recently joined the small group of companies making their own 5G modems. It introduced the Apple C1 Chip inside the iPhone 16e and while Apple highlighted its power efficiency, the modem has some key limitations. This makes Apple’s first in-house 5G modem unsuitable for higher-end iPhones. Here’s what we know.

Apple To Address C1 Chip’s Lack Of mmWave 5G

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Apple is already working on a “refreshed C1” for next year, which will address its biggest drawback of lack of mmWave support.

As of now, the C1 modem only supports sub-6GHz 5G. It features a baseband built on a 4nm or 5nm process, 7nm transceivers for low and intermediate frequencies and a 55nm Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC). While some expected Apple to move to a 3nm baseband in the next version, according to Kuo that’s unlikely since it wouldn’t significantly improve power efficiency.

Apple instead plans to add mmWave transceivers and front-end components using a 28nm node, allowing for much faster 5G speeds, at least in regions where mmWave is available. Kuo notes that making mmWave work isn’t difficult, but creating a modem that is both stable and power-efficient is a bigger challenge.

Kuo writes, “(improved chip) aims to improve power consumption and transmission speed and support for mmWave (including TRx and front-end components, built on a 28nm process). While supporting mmWave isn’t particularly challenging, achieving stable performance with low power consumption remains a key hurdle.”

Kuo previously reported that the iPhone 17 Air would use the C1 modem along with Apple’s in-house Wi-Fi chip. However, the rest of the iPhone 17 lineup will continue using Qualcomm’s 5G modem while switching to Apple’s Wi-Fi chip (Apple previously relied on Broadcom for this).

It’s unclear whether Apple’s existing agreements with Qualcomm or the lack of mmWave support will keep the C1 out of most iPhone 17 models. However, more iPhone 18 models could adopt the upgraded C1 modem next year. As for a next-generation Apple C2 modem, there’s no information on that yet.
