Tecno Camon 17 Pro Review: An affordable flagship with impressive features

Shenzhen-based phonemaker Tecno might not be the most popular smartphone brand in the market but that has not deterred it from unveiling handsets for the budget segment. And now it is refreshing its lineup for this year with the likes of Camon 17 Pro.

Today, I am going to review the Tecno Camon 17 Pro, one of Tecno’s most recent additions to their camera flagship line. I have had it for around three weeks now, been using it for that period of time and in this review, I will cover all of the specs, features, pros and cons – everything you should know before you buy or probably if you have bought and didn’t know. The Camon 17 Pro is one of the successors to the Camon 16 Premier line and how were they able to get Wizkid last year and Chris Evans this year? Who do you think Tecno will grab next? Anyway, without further ado, let’s get to the review!

The Tecno Camon 17 Pro has a couple of selling points, most notable being its 48-megapixel clear selfie-camera, the Helio G95 processor, 90Hz refresh rate among other features. If I am correct, this is actually the first device from Tecno sporting a center hole punch selfie camera style and it’s a most welcome improvement. What I hope to see next is a super AMOLED display, fingers crossed for that one.

What’s in the box?

The device comes with complete accessories in the box. You have your 13 months warranty card. There’s a transparent soft gel case and it fits in firmly on to the device. In a smaller package, you will find a sim ejector tool attached and within you have your USB-A to USB-C cable and a pair of earphones (the phone has a headphone jack) which is nice to see. Most devices at this price point currently do not have earphones in the box. The last item in the box is a 33W charging brick. There’s a screen protector already pre-installed on the device.

Design

The Tecno Camon 17 Pro has quite a solid design and build with Gorilla Glass on the display. The rear feels like plastic but Tecno calls it “organic glass” and drop resistant. It has a nice feel, close to a frosted or matt finish and it is going to repel smudges and fingerprints to a good extent. If you look carefully at the design of the Tecno Camon 17 Pro, you will notice a little detail underneath its rear finish. It has a linear pattern. You have the shiny and reflective CAMON branding boldly to the bottom left. I had the Arctic Down colour variant.

Its quad rear cameras are arranged vertically to the left of the rear in a two-level camera bump, with the first level housing its LED flash. There’s also a single front-facing flash atop the display. The frame of the Tecno Camon 17 Pro is plastic and it houses its ports and buttons. During set-up, I got to set-up the finger print reader to the side which also doubles up the power button. It is easy to reach and pretty fast to unlock your device, also mostly accurate. Above it is the volume rocker, which is on the right side. To the left, we have got the SIM and Micro SD card slot, capable of handling 2 nano sims and one micro SD card. Up top is where we get a secondary microphone, and at the bottom, we have the headphone jack, microphone USB C port and the speaker. Keep in mind that this has a stereo speaker set up that gets really really loud and it should meet your expectations. The second speaker is at the earpiece area and this would aid for better phone calls and playback when you are watching a video. The Tecno Camon 17 Pro stands tall at 6.8-inches, it is not one you should consider for one handed use but its curved rear edges makes it a little bit comfortable to hold on one hand.

Display

The display here is a 1080 by 2460 LCD display with 500 nits of brightness, 395 pixels per inch and 84 per cent screen-to-body ratio. While most of us would have preferred an AMOLED display for all the right reasons, this also works.

With the selfie camera centered, you will enjoy watching and streaming content especially with the stereo speakers to compliment. The 90Hz screen refresh rate makes operating this device a fluid and enjoyable experience. There is no stutter when scrolling through the UI and in my experience so far this is not your random 90Hz experience, it is actually pretty good. Of course as standard you get dark mode.

Performance

The software on the Camon 17 Pro is HiOS 7.6 on Android 11. The MediaTek hello G95 is the system on chip or the processor and Tecno ensured that they at least maxed out of the features of the G95. Of course, it’s a processor capable of 10GB of RAM, but Tecno tops it out at 8GB of RAM and a 128GB of internal storage. There’s also a bigger 256GB of storage version but I got the smaller 8GB + 128GB version. With 8GB of RAM, it is able to handle whatever apps or multi-tasking you throw at it. I haven’t had any issues with multi-tasking or resuming any tasks. I found it plenty enough for me. It brings a lot of new and improved features alongside a lot of unwanted apps that you may have to go through uninstalling and disabling.

Though not by much, it has a 5 per cent better GPU performance. Its benchmark scores are very impressive on the likes of AnTuTu and Geekbench and this puts it toe-to-toe with the likes of the Redmi Note 10 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy A52 when it comes to performance.

It has the Mali-G76 for its GPU and smooth gaming performance is expected. I played Battlegrounds Mobile India and was able to do smoothly on high graphics and maximum frame rates without lags.

Camera

The camera of the Tecno Camon 17 Pro is one of its major selling points. It is dubbed “The Clearest Selfie Camera”. It has a 48-megapixel selfie camera placed on the display. On the rear, we have the quad camera combination of a 64-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera, 2-megapixel depth sensor and a 2-megapixel sensor called black or white, not sure what that is going to do.

Its cameras certainly do not disappoint and it has been up to expectations from the few pictures that I have shot. To access high resolution mode from either its selfie or rear camera, you can swipe up from the camera menu and select ultra HD. With this mode, you can shoot high resolution photos from either its selfie or its rear cameras. The Tecno Camon 17 Pro also shines with its regular selfie shots, it looks sharp and actually quite impressive. It does good job of blurring out the background, but it sometimes overexposes it. There’s also other camera modes including film mode which allows you to take a couple of shots and merges them with nice transitions and sound. Super Night mode is also impressive and allows you to take better pictures at night.

Battery

The Tecno Camon 17 Pro has a 5000mAh battery and so far battery life has been solid. It has 33W fast charger in the box which is expected to power it up in a short time, but surprisingly in my experience of charging this device, it took me around 2 hours to power it from 0 to 100 per cent. I am not sure why but I expected it to be significantly faster.

Final verdict

Based on my experience, we have got good things like the processor, night mode, enough RAM and memory, and also good camera performance. The only real complain I can have about the Camon 17 Pro is HiOS. Take that out of the way and you have a solid device. For devices in this price range, you get almost the same quality. It is worth the price tag of Rs 16,999.

“Satellite communications can act as backhaul for cellular networks”

The way satellite communication has been gaining prominence globally, it is seen as the next big thing in the telecom space. To understand what this technology is all about and how it can complement the existing network infrastructure, Ramesh Kumar Raja talked to Sabyasachi Majumdar, Group Head and Senior Vice President at ICRA. It must be noted that ICRA recently came up with a report that says the user base of satellite communication in India is expected to increase to about 1.5-2 million by 2025, clocking revenue of nearly Rs 5,000-6,000 crore annually, if the operating environment eases. Excerpts:

What exactly is satellite communication and what are the technicalities involved in it?

The normal communication as of now is done via a terrestrial network, which involves communication between active mobile instruments located on the ground. In satellite communication, the signal goes to a satellite, or a constellation of satellites and returns back from there, through a specific spectrum band. There are three types of satellites – GEO, MEO and LEO. Off late, a lot of developments are happening in the LEO space where the satellite operators are launching a constellation of satellites which can be used for communication purposes.

 

What are the benefits that it offers? How can satellite communication complement the existing network infrastructure?

Satellites have wide geographical coverage and can act as service providers in areas which are remote, sparsely populated and inaccessible where there is a difficulty in laying terrestrial networks. Thus, satellite communications can act as backhaul for cellular networks. Further, satellite communications act as only source of communications during disasters.

How do you see it rolling out globally and what is its status in India?

Globally while the penetration of satellite users (both retail and enterprise) is low despite being in place for a long time, things are evolving now. With the launch of LEO satellites, latencies have reduced and satcom operators are promising healthy data transmission speeds, the market is expected to grow. While it still remains a pricier option, the pricing should normalise over the medium term which can increase the pace of adoption. India has its own set of challenges in terms of strict skies policy, vague licensing regime and lack of clarity on spectrum allocation and frequencies.

Who are the major players in this space and what is their level of preparedness to take the communication technology to the next level?

This space is largely captured by global players. While there are traditionl operators like Intelsat, Viasat, Hughes, Inmarsat, etc, new players like OneWeb and Starlink have been very active in launching satellites, while Amazon and China Satellite Network Group also have plans to launch a constellation of LEO satellites. These players are working on newest of technologies, claiming low latency rates and high data transmission speeds.

Can you please tell us about the business opportunities that it offers? How do you look at India as a market for this technology?

As mentioned above, these are largely effective in inaccessible and remote areas. While this remains an expensive proposition, the operating environment is also not very conducive. If the same easens, the satcom user base is expected to expand in the medium to longer term.

What are the challenges you see over here that are obstructing its growth?

Satcom is an expensive service vis-a-vis terrestrial network for the consumers. Further, the operating environment in India is difficult with strict policies for foreign and private players to operate in this space, unclear licensing policies and uncertainty around the band of spectrum to be used as well as the mechanism of allocation of the same.

Zoom launches focus mode for online classes

Video collaboration platform Zoom has announced a new ‘Focus Mode’ that will help students stay attentive during online classes. The company said that with this feature, teachers can supervise their class, but students won’t be distracted by their peers’ video feeds or feel self-conscious about turning on their own camera. India PC market sees shipments of over 3 million units for second consecutive quarter: IDC

Thanks to the trend of work from home and online learning in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, the India traditional PC market (inclusive of desktops, notebooks, and workstations) continued to be robust as the shipments grew by 50.5% year-over-year (YoY) in 2Q21 (Apr-Jun), as per a new report by International Data Corporation. A total of 3.2 million PCs were shipped in the quarter, with all product categories reporting strong double-digit growth, it found.

In the absence of any large education and government deal, this was the second consecutive quarter when India’s PC market saw shipments of over 3 million PCs, underlining the growth in the enterprise, SMB, and consumer segments.

Notebook PCs continue to hold more than three-fourth share in the overall category and grew 49.9% YoY in 2Q21, reporting a fourth consecutive quarter with over 2 million units, said the study. Desktops also indicated a recovery as shipments grew 52.3% YoY after recording the lowest shipments of the decade in 2Q20, it added.

According to the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker, the second wave of COVID-19 further delayed the opening of schools and colleges, strengthening the demand for PCs for home learning. In 2Q21, the consumer segment grew 118.4% YoY, and 5.9% sequentially as vendors prepared the channel in anticipation of stronger demand. The commercial segment grew 13.8% YoY in 2Q21 as the enterprises, especially the IT and IT-enabled services companies, continued buying to manage the growing workforce in the ongoing work from home scenario. Moreover, the demand from SMBs also supported the growth of the commercial segment as it grew 61.2% from the same time a year ago.

“Despite the country being severely impacted by the second wave of COVID-19, there was a sense of optimism in the market as vendors utilized the time to procure devices to assure channel availability from their end,” said Bharath Shenoy, Market Analyst, PC Devices, IDC India. He further added, “Channel partners were struggling with low inventories and backlogs for almost a year; this came as a breather for a few vendors as they were able to add a few more weeks’ inventories to their channel. However, as demand continues to outstrip the supply, it doesn’t seem that the channel inventory will return to normal before the year-end.”

Top 5 companies   

HP Inc. reported the second quarter in a row with over a million shipments. It maintained its lead in the India PC market with a 33.6% share as its shipments grew 54.2% annually. HP shipped over half a million notebooks in the consumer segment, registering the highest shipments in the consumer notebook segment in a quarter by any vendor in India. Better allocation to the country and timely supplies helped the vendor to further widen its lead in the PC category.

Dell Technologies continued to hold the second position with a 22.1% share and impressive 86.1% YoY growth in 2Q21. In the commercial segment, with a share of 29.6%, it placed close behind HP in the second position. Also, it retained its third position in the consumer segment as its shipments grew 161.9% YoY in 2Q21.

Lenovo maintained the third position with a share of 17.8% in 2Q21. However, it did witness a marginal decline in its overall shipments due to the delayed supplies in the country. Nevertheless, it retained its second position in the consumer segment as its shipments saw a 28.8% yearly growth in 2Q21.

Acer Group retained the fourth position with an 8.7% market share in 2Q21. The vendor witnessed a YoY growth of 31.6%, primarily driven by strong performance in the consumer notebook segment as its shipments almost tripled from the same time a year ago. Acer also shared the leading position in the commercial desktop category with HP, with a share of 24.6% in 2Q21.

Apple tied with Asus in the fifth position for the second quarter in a row. It continued its strong performance and managed to ship more than 100 thousand units for the fourth quarter in succession.

Asus shipments grew 39.8% YoY in 2Q21 as it observed positive traction in both consumer and commercial segments. The vendor returned to the fourth position in the consumer segment with a share of 8.9% in this quarter and registered 37.5% growth from the same quarter a year ago.

Talking about the recent trends, Jaipal Singh, Research Manager, Client Devices, IDC India, said, “The tremendous growth in India’s consumer notebook segment is attracting many smartphone brands to explore this category. The country offers huge potential for all brands to grow if they timely address the demand, which is slowly shifting to entry-level price points. However, the current supply situation may restrict the growth opportunities in the short term, but this is a great window of opportunity to enter India’s consumer notebook market.” He further added, “New brands also need to be considerate about the challenges that PC vendors faced in the past in terms of affordability, connectivity, and usability, and their devices portfolio should be aligned to these challenges if they are eying a significant share in this market.”

Mi 11X vs Poco F3 GT: Which is a better sibling?

Xiaomi has recently launched another performance-centric smartphone Poco F3 GT in India as the next model in the F series. It is essentially a rebranded version of the Redmi K40 Game Enhanced Edition from China. Xiaomi has already launched the other Redmi K40 models in India as Mi 11X series, rebranded Redmi K40 and Redmi K40 Pro+. The recently launched Poco F3 GT offers super specifications as the brand seeks to establish itself in the premium segment. On paper, the smartphone appears to be a strong contender against the likes of Mi 11X. But it is not all roses here and there are thorns too. Let’s just find out how the Poco F3 GT stacks up against its sibling Mi 11X in the premium segment and which one should you buy.

Design

The Mi 11X is a reasonably attractive handset that features all the trappings of a modern phone, such as a small notch, thin bezels, a glossy glass back, and a sizable camera assembly on the back. It comes in three colors – Cosmic Black, Lunar White, and Celestial Silver. On the other hand, the Poco F3 GT too is a good looking phone that offers a premium feel in the hand. One of the major highlights of the F3 GT is its maglev trigger buttons, positioned on the right side. It comes in two colours – Gunmetal Silver and Predator Black.

Display

Mi 11X as well as Poco F3 GT are fairly large smartphones. Mi 11X sports a big 6.67-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display whereas Poco F3 GT too has a massive 6.67-inch AMOLED display, dominating the phone’s front with the same refresh rate of 120Hz. In terms of screen to body ratio, Poco’s device has better ratio of ~ 86.3 per cent than Mi 11X’s ~ 85.9 per cent.

Cameras

Poco F3 GT’s 64-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide sensor and a 2-megapixel macro camera outclasses Xiaomi’s Mi 11X’s 48-megapixel primary camera, and 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 5-megapixel macro sensor in terms of resolution.
