Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold is now available for buyers and it appears Google is finally opening up. The company has finally shared new insights into the engineering and design choices behind its latest foldable flagship. While the phone may appear visually similar to its predecessor, the company insists it represents a major upgrade, particularly due to its new gearless hinge mechanism and refined build. Here’s what Google shared.

How Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s Gearless Hinge Was Built?

Google recently shared a detailed blog post titled “How we built the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s new gearless hinge.”

image

According to Claude Zellweger, who leads the Pixel industrial design team, Google’s designers and engineers took a bold approach this time, opting for what he described as a “less safe and more aggressive path.” This was both in terms of the hinge design and the device’s “aggressive dimensions.” Despite its slightly thicker form factor, the new Pixel Fold delivers substantial improvements in usability, durability, and overall feel.

“We felt that if we’re able to really progress and push our engineering capabilities, we should,” Claude [Zellweger, Pixel industrial design lead] says. That’s how we ended up with what Claude describes as the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s “aggressive dimensions,” a better performing camera and more — including an all-new gearless hinge, which made much of the new Fold’s build possible,” the company writes in the blog post.

As the name suggests, the gearless hinge completely eliminates traditional gears. Google chose this design because gears can accumulate dust over time, which may degrade the basic opening and closing experience that is critical on a foldable.” By removing these components, the company aimed to create a more durable and reliable hinge mechanism.

“The biggest change is that this is what we call a gearless hinge — which literally means it doesn’t have any gears,” says Sangsoo Park, an Industrial Designer at Pixel phones. “The team was interested in this new design because gears can cause issues over time for a hinge: They can be damaged and dust can get stuck between them over time, degrading the basic opening and closing experience that is critical on a foldable. A gearless hinge is more reliable — it will continue to work flawlessly over time,Sangsoo explains.

In most foldable devices, a hinge typically includes four gears with interlocking teeth that help the two halves rotate symmetrically during folding and unfolding. In contrast, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold uses CAMs, mechanical components that convert rotational motion into linear motion, to achieve the same symmetry. These spring-loaded CAMs ensure that when one half of the phone is opened or closed, the other half follows in perfect alignment.

Google explains, “Typical hinges have four gears with teeth that allow two halves of the device to rotate symmetrically as it opens and closes. The gearless hinge maintains this symmetrical motion using mechanical components called CAMs, which convert one type of motion to another. In this case, they’re converting rotational to linear motion, which allows the hinge to save some space.”

Benefits of the New Design

image

The new hinge design not only improves reliability but also contributes to several functional advantages. The gearless system allows for larger displays, thinner bezels, and even a bigger battery, while reducing the overall bulk of the hinge area. Because the hinge now protrudes less from the body, the phone also offers a more comfortable in-hand grip.

Additionally, eliminating the small gaps that gears typically require helped Google achieve an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. It is a significant improvement in durability for a foldable device.

To recall, Google officially introduced the Pixel 10 Pro Fold alongside the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL in August 2025. However, the foldable model has only just become available for purchase, marking the company’s latest step in refining its foldable smartphone lineup.

Here’s an introduction video released at the launch –

FAQs

Q1. What makes the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s hinge different from other foldables?

Answer. Unlike traditional hinges that use four interlocking gears, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold features a gearless hinge powered by spring-loaded CAMs, which convert rotational motion into linear motion for symmetrical folding.

Q2. Why did Google choose a gearless hinge design for Pixel 10 Pro Fold?

Answer. Google eliminated gears to reduce dust accumulation and improve long-term reliability. This design also enabled a more compact hinge area, contributing to better grip and IP68 water and dust resistance.

Q3. What are the benefits of the new hinge design for Pixel 10 Pro Fold?

Answer. The gearless hinge allows for larger displays, thinner bezels, and a bigger battery. It also improves durability, enhances comfort in hand, and supports a sleeker overall build.

The company first launched this AI translation tool in August after initially previewing it at the Meta Connect conference last year. At first, it was only offering support for English and Spanish language translations.

The platforms now add support for Hindi and Portuguese while Meta is looking to strengthen its reach in two of its largest creator markets, India and Brazil.

Announcing the expansion, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a video post, “Big news for Reels: we’re launching translations using Meta AI in more languages. It’s available for Hindi, Portuguese, Spanish and English now and we’re working on adding more soon. Check it out!”

A post shared by Mark Zuckerberg (@zuck)

Zuckerberg shared the news through a series of video clips, highlighting how the company’s AI translation tool can help creators and audiences connect across language barriers.

Meanwhile, Instagram Head Adam Mosseri also explained the importance of the feature in a video on Instagram, saying, “Most of the videos on Instagram are in a language you don’t speak, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t interested in them.” Mosseri then went on to dub the rest of his video in Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese using Meta AI, showcasing the technology in action.

According to Meta, the feature uses Meta AI to automatically translate, dub, and lip-sync video content. It allows creators to share their Reels in multiple languages without losing the natural tone and style of their voice. With this update, the AI translation feature now supports four languages, which are English, Spanish, Hindi, and Portuguese. The company is expected to add more languages in future updates.

How Meta AI Translation for Reels Works?

Meta explains that its AI system replicates the creator’s original voice tone and sound to generate translated audio that feels authentic and natural across languages. An optional lip-syncing feature aligns the translated voice with the speaker’s mouth movements, creating a more realistic viewing experience.

The company revealed that this technology has been in development since its initial announcement in 2024 with direct feedback from creators helping refine and enhance the feature.

How to Use Meta AI to Translate Reels?

Creators uploading a new Reel on Facebook or Instagram will now see an option labelled “Translate your voice with Meta AI.” By selecting this, they can choose whether to enable lip-syncing for the translated version.

Before publishing, creators can preview their Reel, receive a notification to review, and approve the translation before posting it live.

Meta AI Translation in Reels – Availability

The translation service is free to use for Facebook creators with at least 1,000 followers and for all public Instagram accounts in regions where Meta AI is currently available.

Once enabled, the feature will automatically translate Reels for international viewers.

Viewers can also customise their experience using built-in settings. All translated videos will display a “Translated with Meta AI” label. Users can choose to turn off translations or switch back to the original audio through the three-dot settings menu under the audio and language options.

Announcing the feature in a blog post, Meta said, “Imagine discovering a reel that makes you laugh, inspires you, or teaches you something new, no matter where it was created or what language it was filmed in. That’s the future we’re building at Meta.” It is clear that Meta is positioning Reels as a truly global content platform and helping creators reach audiences beyond language barriers. Voicing this, the tech giant also added, “Translations with Meta AI is just one way we’re bringing the best content to audiences and finding innovative new ways to connect people around the world.”

FAQs

Realme has officially announced a strategic partnership with RICOH IMAGING COMPANY LTD, set to launch on October 14 in Beijing. The collaboration is reportedly four years in the making and will debut with the upcoming Realme GT 8 Pro smartphone.

Realme and RICOH IMAGING Join Hands

To mark the partnership, the companies released a promotional video titled “4 Years in One Snap”, featuring realme Vice President and CMO Chase Xu and Kazunobu Saiki, General Manager of the Camera Business Division at RICOH IMAGING COMPANY LTD., discussing the foundation of their collaboration.

Realme Vice President and CMO Chase Xu in a discussion with Kazunobu Saiki, General Manager of Camera Business Division at RICOH IMAGING COMPANY LTD., said, “The elements that brought two brands together, which grounded on a shared understanding of user demands. realme saw that young people struggled with two main pain points in mobile photography: increasingly similar hardware and over-processed algorithms that stripped photos of authenticity. People are getting tired of the same ‘perfect style’ photos. More and more, everyone wants to show their own style, instead of copying the same look. The RICOH GR series has been known as a “street photography hero” because of its sharp quality, portability, and quick response. “That’s exactly what we value.”

Kazunobu Saiki said, “RICOH Imaging and realme share a base of young, creative users. Our collaboration is not only about innovation in products, but also about culture to inspire a new generation to enjoy street photography and discover the beauty of everyday life.”

The partnership is rooted in a shared focus on mobile photography, addressing two key challenges identified by Realme, homogenised hardware across smartphones and over-processed algorithms that compromise photo authenticity. The goal is to bring the RICOH GR series’ signature features, widely recognised in street photography, into mobile devices.

The Realme GT 8 Pro will be the first device to showcase this collaboration featuring co-engineered optical enhancements, advanced colour algorithms, and refined imaging tones. The camera system will include a custom user interface designed to replicate the feel of a RICOH GR camera. Leveraging RICOH GR’s 30-year heritage, the phone will integrate a film-like aesthetic and five classic image tones into its photography experience.

Further details on the partnership and the GT 8 Pro’s imaging capabilities will be revealed at the official launch on October 14, ahead of the phone’s China debut later this month.

Limited Rollout for Now

Reports indicate that the Liquid Glass UI is currently available only to select iOS users including some beta testers. It could be a gradual release, as of now. According to the trusted WhatsApp Beta source WABetaInfo, Meta may be conducting a limited test phase before expanding the rollout to all iOS users.

The feature first appeared in WhatsApp’s beta testing last month and is now reaching a wider audience through the public app version.

WhatsApp iOS Update – Design Changes and Enhancements

The update introduces several visual refinements inspired by Apple’s iOS 26 Liquid Glass interface. The most noticeable update is the redesigned tab bar at the bottom of the screen. It now features a semi-translucent, floating appearance, giving it a layered, glass-like effect.

The icons in the tab bar have smooth animations and the design adapts seamlessly to both light and dark themes, as well as to different screen sizes and orientations.

WhatsApp has also updated the app’s native keyboard and system buttons to match the new aesthetic. These elements now use Apple’s translucent and reflective design language, creating a more cohesive look throughout the interface.

Additionally, the context menu within WhatsApp now follows the same Liquid Glass styling, offering consistency across various UI components. However, some areas particularly the chat bar remain unchanged for now.

Alongside the design overhaul, the update also includes a number of bug fixes and performance optimisations to ensure smoother operation and improved stability for iOS users.
