Meta has rolled out a new update for its Messenger app introducing several new features to enhance the overall calling experience.
In a press note announcement on the company’s official blog, Meta revealed that more than 7 billion minutes are collectively spent on calls through Facebook and Messenger apps every day.
The new Messenger Calling features include AI Backgrounds, HD Video Calls, Recordings and Hands-Free Calling.
Here’s everything you need to know about the new features.
“We’re announcing new Messenger Calling features, many of which are some of our most requested. Now, calling is easier, more reliable and more fun,” Meta wrote in blog post.
You can now add AI-generated backgrounds during video calls.
By tapping the effects icon in the sidebar and selecting “Backgrounds,” you can swap out your real backdrop for something like a sunflower field or an alien sunset.
It’s a handy way to hide a messy room or a cluttered car and a feature many other video platforms already offer.
Messenger calls now support high-definition video by default on Wi-Fi connections. You can also enable HD calls over cellular by turning on “Mobile data for HD video” in settings.
Other audio improvements include background noise suppression and voice isolation, which Meta says will “help you make clearer, higher-quality calls directly from Messenger.” Both features can be toggled on or off in the app’s call settings.
You can now leave a voice or video message instead of relying on text or emojis every time you miss a call. Just tap the “record message” button in the lower-right corner of the call screen to send a personalized message.
For iPhone users, Messenger now integrates with Siri. You can say, “Hey Siri, send a message to [contact name] on Messenger,” to send a hands-free text or dictate a message.
