The Story Behind Google’s “I’m Feeling Lucky” Button

image

Highlights

  • The “I’m Feeling Lucky” button has been a constant feature since Google’s inception in 1998.
  • Clicking the button takes users directly to the first search result.
  • It bypasses the search results page.

If you use Google (as if there is any chance that you don’t), you have probably seen Google’s fun “I’m Feeling Lucky” button. But how much attention have you actually paid to it. Did you know there’s more to it than just a quirky feature?

The “I’m Feeling Lucky” button has a unique history. It plays an interesting role in how we search for information online.

Let’s explore what makes this unique button special and why it has been around for so long.

A Look Back at Google’s Evolution

We need to go back to Google’s beginnings to be able to understand the significance of the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button.

Founded in 1998, Google completely transformed how we search the internet.

Before Google, finding information online required searching through multiple websites to find what exactly you are looking for.

Google Search mainly worked as a tool that simplified things. It delivered fast and relevant results. In the process, it changed how we access information forever.

Since that beginning, Google has been through many changes, starting from search algorithm updates to interface redesigns.

But there is one feature that has remained constant throughout all these years is – the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button.

What Does Google’s “I’m Feeling Lucky” Button Do?

First and foremost, the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button is there to save time above all.

Clicking on this button takes the user directly to the first search result for the query. It is basically a feature to bypass the search results page entirely.

It’s a faster way to find a relevant answer to your question without scrolling through multiple links.

However, there is a catch. Since it directly takes you to a result, what you get as a response to your query can be hit or miss.

Sometimes, the first link is exactly what you need. However, on other occasions, there are chances that the search result is not relevant.

This feature may not be so helpful when you are looking for some specific information. Since the feature completely relies on the top search result, there is a chance the result you get might not always be the most accurate.

Moreover, if you click the button without any search questions, you will be taken to a page filled with Google Doodles. This showcases Google’s fun side.

The Impact of the “I’m Feeling Lucky” Button

The “I’m Feeling Lucky” button today has become a cultural icon.

Many users on Google click this button just to see where it takes them.

The button also highlights how accuracy in search engines is as important as how fast you get the results of your queries.

Google users not only expect to get quick results but also relevant and reliable information.

A Nostalgic Feature

In the end, Google’s “I’m Feeling Lucky” button represents nostalgia in the world of online search.

While it may not seem like a serious feature that many people use, it reflects how far we’ve come as internet users. Whether clicking on this unique button leads to a helpful discovery or not, the button represents the spirit of search.

The “I’m Feeling Lucky” button is a playful reminder that sometimes unexpected search results can be useful, even in the age of quick and precise answers.

FAQs

What is the purpose of Google’s “I’m Feeling Lucky” button?

The “I’m Feeling Lucky” button takes users directly to the first search result for their query, bypassing the search results page. This can save time but may yield mixed relevance, as the first result might not always be the most accurate.

Why has the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button become a cultural icon?

The “I’m Feeling Lucky” button represents nostalgia and the playful spirit of search. It highlights the importance of both speed and accuracy in search results and reflects how far we’ve come as internet users since Google’s inception in 1998.

How to Use “I’m Feeling Lucky” on Android or iOS?

The “I’m Feeling Lucky” button is not available on the mobile version of Google Search. However, you can request the website’s desktop version from your favorite browser when you open Google’s home page.

Here’s how you can do it on the Chrome browser:

• Launch Chrome and go to google.com.

• Tap the vertical three-dot menu in the top right corner.

• Scroll down and tap Desktop site.

• This will reload Google’s website in its full-fledged desktop mode, with the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button present.

What Is “I’m Feeling Doodley,” and What Does It Do?

“I’m Feeling Doodley” is one of the variations of the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button on Google’s home page. When you hover over the button without entering a search query, you can see different options that start with “I’m Feeling.” If you click “I’m Feeling Doodley,” you will be taken to a random Google doodle, which is a spontaneous, fun, and interactive change to the Google logo that celebrates local heroes, events, and culture.

You can explore more than 5,000 doodles from the past 23 years by visiting the Google Doodles Archive or clicking the “I’m Feeling Doodly” button.

What Are the Variations of “I Am Feeling Google”?

  • I’m Feeling Playful: Whisks you away to a random interactive Google Doodle tool, game, or toy.
  • I’m Feeling Artistic: Pulls up a surprise piece from the Google Arts and Culture archives.
  • I’m Feeling Funny: Shows a random meme or joke from Google Images.
  • I’m Feeling Curious: Brings up a random word or topic from Wikipedia to explore.

Now, the music streaming platform has officially announced expanding the AI-powered playlist generation feature to more countries.

The feature was previously only available in limited testing. It would now be available in beta to Premium users on Android and iOS devices in the US, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand.

With so much content out there, one of the big challenges is finding the right new music. Spotify’s AI playlist creation aims to address this issue.

AI Playlist brings together Spotify’s personalisation technology with generative AI. This helps users turn their creative inputs into playlists.

This feature promises a fun and easy way to curate the perfect musical mix that suits your music taste.

Spotify made the announcement about the new feature in its official Newsroom.

“Creating a playlist with AI Playlist is as easy as entering a unique prompt into the chat, like “upbeat pop music for my European summer vacation” or “a romantic playlist for date night at home.” Spotify will then offer a personalized selection of songs that match the vibe you’re going for, which you can revise and refine by typing in additional prompts.

(Credit: Spotify)

The more specific you can be, the better. The most successful playlists are generated with prompts that contain a mix of genres, moods, artists, or decades, so get creative! You can also reference places, animals, activities, movie characters, colours, and even emojis,” Spotify informed.

For now, AI playlist generation is available exclusively to Premium subscribers using iOS and Android devices.

It is currently unclear whether free users will eventually have access to the feature.

Since the feature is currently launching in beta, we can expect changes in the way it works later based on the initial results and feedback.

iPhone 16 Battery and Charging – How To Fast Charge Your iPhone 16? Check First iPhone 16 Pro Max Battery Test Results

Highlights

  • iPhone 16 supports up to 27-watt charging via USB-C.
  • MagSafe chargers support up to 25-watt wireless charging.
  • iOS 18 notifies you of slow chargers.
  • PhoneArean’s iPhone 16 Pro Max battery test results are out.

Fast Charge Your iPhone 16

Fast charging our iPhone is a pre-requisite. No one wants to sit for hours to get a fully charged battery. However, you will be surprised to know how many iPhone users are not really utilising the fastest charging methods available.

The easiest way to know if your charging method is the fastest possible or not is to observe when your iPhone is charging.

If you notice that your iPhone is taking many hours to charge from 0 to 100 per cent, know that you might not be using fast-charging accessories.

While slow charging might not be an issue to many users who prefer charging their iPhone overnight or are not in a hurry, it can be chaotic when you have to rush to work and your iPhone still shows a 48 per cent battery.  Also, it wouldn’t hurt anyone to use the fastest charging available now, would it?

iOS 18 actually address this issue. It informs the iPhone users in the UI in case they are using a slow charger.

Here’s how you can check that if you are using iOS 18.

image

Go to Settings > Battery to see a graph of your charging activity.

If you are using a slow charger, you will be able to see an orange warning text on top.

How to Fast Charge Your iPhone Using USB-C?

image

Apple USB-C cable and a compatible USB-C power brick. (Image credit – Apple)

The iPhone 16 supports up to 27-watt charging through its USB-C port. Using a 30-watt charging brick, you can fully charge your iPhone 16 in about 2 hours.

To fast charge, you’ll need a USB-C cable and a compatible USB-C power brick (30-watt Mophie charger or the Apple 35-watt dual charger.)

With these accessories, you can charge from 0% to 50% in about 30 minutes and reach 100% in around 2 hours.

A 20-watt charger works nearly as fast. In just about 15 minutes slower for a full charge.

It is important to note that using a charger rated higher than 30 watts like the MacBook charger won’t increase the charging speed beyond the iPhone’s 27-watt limit.

How to Fast Charge iPhone 16 Pros Wirelessly using MagSafe?

image

A fast-charging MagSafe puck. (Image credit – Apple)

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro support wireless fast charging with the new generation MagSafe chargers.

For this, you’ll need a fast-charging MagSafe puck.

Apple recommends pairing it with a 30-watt charger. However, a 30-watt charger of any reputed brand should work fine.

These new MagSafe chargers can charge your iPhone at up to 25 watts. Compared to this, older MagSafe and Qi chargers were limited to 15 watts.

Wireless fast charging can match wired charging for the first half (0% to 50%) but is slightly less efficient overall, especially as the phone heats up.

You can charge from 0% to 50% in about 30 minutes but expect about 2 more hours to reach 100%.

Telegram to Share User Data with Law Enforcement, CEO Durov Confirms

Telegram will now provide users’ IP addresses and phone numbers to law enforcement in response, according to CEO Pavel Durov. This is a major shift from the popular messaging app’s earlier position on user privacy.

The policy change is to curb criminal activity on the platform and in response to valid legal requests.

Durov took to Telegram to announce this update this week. The CEO explained that the platform’s terms of service were updated to prevent increasing abusive activities on the platform.

“If Telegram receives a valid order from the relevant judicial authorities that confirms you’re a suspect in a case involving criminal activities that violate the Telegram Terms of Service, we will perform a legal analysis of the request and may disclose your IP address and phone number to the relevant authorities,” the updated privacy policy states.

Announcing the policy change, Durov said, “While 99.999% of Telegram users have nothing to do with crime, the 0.001% involved in illicit activities create a bad image for the entire platform, putting the interests of our almost billion users at risk.”

It is significant to note that the recent policy changes in Telegram came just weeks after Durov was arrested in France. Durov, the Russian business executive and entrepreneur, faces charges related to the spread of child abuse content on the app.

Durov has denied these charges.

“Telegram’s abrupt increase in user count to 950M caused growing pains that made it easier for criminals to abuse our platform. That’s why I’ve made it my personal goal to ensure we significantly improve in this regard,” Durov wrote on his Telegram channel.

Telegram has been notorious for resisting regulations and denying government requests for user data in the past. The platform has been often under the lens for its lax moderation policies.

It has often ignored requests from authorities, particularly around criminal investigations.

However, Durov has now confirmed that the company will be working with renewed efforts to prevent the misuse of the platform. He further announced that Telegram will be using Artificial Intelligence (AI) along with human moderators to hide problematic content from search results.

Since his arrest in France, Telegram has implemented several new measures.

Earlier this month, the platform disabled new media uploads. This was done to prevent bots and scammers from exploiting the platform.

Telegram has previously faced criticism from governments around the world, including in the European Union, Russia, and Iran. The platform has been under the radar of law enforcement agencies in many countries for its role in enabling unlawful activities.

As of now, Durov remains under investigation in France.
