Meta is set to lay off 3,600 employees, which is about 5% of its workforce, as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg‘s drive to raise the bar on performance management.

In an internal memo, Zuckerberg explained that the company would be taking a more aggressive approach to addressing underperformance. “We typically manage out people who aren’t meeting expectations over the course of a year, but now we’re going to do more extensive performance-based cuts during this cycle,” he stated.

The layoffs are scheduled to begin on February 10 for U.S.-based employees. Zuckerberg described 2024 as an intense year for Meta highlighting its focus on developing key technologies like AI, augmented reality glasses and the future of social media platforms.

Hillary Champion, Meta’s director of people development growth programs, elaborated in a separate memo that employees who received “Met Some” or “Did Not Meet” performance ratings would be “automatically added to the performance termination list.”

Meta aims to achieve 10% non-regrettable attrition combining 5% from last year’s cuts with another 5% this year.

The announcement has raised concerns among Meta employees particularly about the accuracy of the performance review system. One employee criticised the process on an internal message board saying it was only “marginally better than monkeys throwing darts” in reflecting actual performance and contributions.

Some employees also pointed out the challenges of maintaining team morale during such turbulent times. One worker wrote, “Teams aren’t exactly strong when morale is low and this is already a pretty rough ride over the last week.

The layoffs follow recent internal shifts at Meta including the rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives as well as the disbanding of its third-party fact-checking program.

Double Tap To React To Messages on WhatsApp

WhatsApp users can now double-tap on a message to react instead of tapping and holding. The most-used emojis will now appear in a scrolling pop-out menu replacing the generic selection that was shown before.

This update works similarly to Discord’s reaction feature, where favourite emojis are easy to find saving the hassle of scrolling through hundreds of emojis. If you still want access to the full emoji library, just tap the plus icon on the reaction bar.

Meanwhile, Meta’s Messenger app still only offers the same five emoji reactions for each message. We think it would be great to see this WhatsApp feature carried over to Messenger in the future.

Creative Tools for Photos, Videos and Selfie Stickers

Galaxy S25 and S25+ :

Galaxy S25 and S25+ will come in two storage variants – 256GB and 512GB.
Available colours for these models include Blue Black, Silver Shadow, Pink Gold, Coral Red, Mint and Navy or Icy Blue.

Galaxy S25 Ultra :

Galaxy S25 Ultra will be available in three storage variants – 256GB, 512GB and 1TB.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Series – Promo Images Leak

Meanwhile, tipster Evan Blass on Substack has shared some images that Samsung is expected to use for the launch event. The two images show all three models of the series with Galaxy S25 Ultra getting its own separate marketing image.

One interesting thing the images reveal about the camera module is that the outer part of the camera rings matches the colour of the back panel of the phone in all three models.

The marketing image also reveals that the frame and the screen are flat while the bezels are evidently thinner than last year. We can also confirm from these leaked images that the Ultra model will have rounded corners. There is also a glimpse of the Now Bar in One UI 7.

Moreover, both leaked promotional images mention Galaxy AI, which tells us where the focus of the launch is going to be.
