No OnePlus 16 for India Next Year? OnePlus 16R Could Take Over the Flagship Spot

Highlights

  • Rumours suggest OnePlus may skip launching the standard OnePlus 16 in India, positioning the 16R as its flagship instead.
  • Nord series will continue covering mid-range, while N series remains focused on budget devices
  • OnePlus 16 could stay exclusive to China.

OnePlus could be planning a major change to its smartphone lineup in India next year. If the recent rumours hold, there is a chance OnePlus 16R will become the brand’s flagship model in the Indian market. This would mark a significant change from OnePlus’ approach in the country where OnePlus’ number series has been the flagship offering until now. Here’s what we know so far.

OnePlus 16R To Replace OnePlus 16 In India

In a recent post on X, well-known tipster Yogesh Brar has claimed that the brand may not bring the standard OnePlus 16 to the Indian market. Instead, the brand could position the OnePlus 16R as its top-end smartphone in the country.

Meanwhile, the Nord range would continue to cover the mid-range segment, while the N series would remain focused on more affordable phones.

It is important to note that none of this has been confirmed by OnePlus as of yet. However, it lines up with an earlier tip that suggested the standard OnePlus 16 could remain exclusive to China.

Just to recall, OnePlus 15 was launched in China in October 2025 and arrived in India just a month later. Keeping its successor out of India would therefore represent a major departure from that pattern.

OnePlus’ Expected Launch Roadmap

The latest speculation about the possible change in OnePlus launch strategy comes after the brand confirmed in July that it would stop launching new smartphones in North America and Europe. The parent company OPPO, on the other hand, would continue its business in Europe as usual.

OnePlus India, meanwhile, has repeatedly maintained that its operations in the country are continuing as usual. So, the latest rumour does not suggest that OnePlus is leaving India. It could only indicate a change in which models the company chooses to sell in the country.

OnePlus 16 has already appeared in several leaks and the reported specifications suggest that it could be a significant upgrade.

According to Digital Chat Station, the phone could feature a 200-megapixel primary camera using a larger 1/1.4-inch sensor. It is also tipped to have a 50-megapixel 3x periscope telephoto camera with a 1/1.95-inch Sony sensor, along with a new 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera. A 50-megapixel autofocus selfie camera is also expected. The model could be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chipset and may pack a 9,000mAh battery. Other tipped features include a system-wide 165Hz display and tri-chip gaming hardware.

Anyhow, the upcoming launches could be worth watching for people planning to buy a premium OnePlus phone next year. We will have to wait for an official confirmation from the brand if the OnePlus 16 indeed remains China-exclusive.
