This is not the first time we are hearing this but it appears Apple is all set for a big display tech upgrade in future iPhones. The Cupertino giant might finally be ready to move Face ID under the screen, starting with the iPhone 18 in 2026. And if everything goes according to the plan, iPhone 19 in 2027 would be when all front-facing sensors including the selfie camera would be completely hidden under the display.

Apple Working on Perfecting Under-Display Face ID

Apple has long been rumoured to be working on reducing or removing the current pill-shaped cutout on the iPhone’s screen. If a trusted leaker is right, we could see these changes roll out gradually over the next few iPhone releases.

Well-known tipster Digital Chat Station posted on Weibo about Apple’s possible camera upgrades. Citing supply chain sources, they claim Face ID will go through some major changes in just three years.

image

For the 2025 iPhone 17 lineup, the leaker says the main camera changes will be on the back with a new “Horizontal large matrix lens DECO.”

Then the iPhone 18 is expected to switch to a punch-hole screen in 2026. The small hole will house the regular front-facing camera, while Face ID will reportedly be moved under the display. This means Face ID could still work without needing a visible cutout.

By 2027, Apple might take things even further with the iPhone 19. The company is rumoured to use a true full-screen display with no visible interruptions at all, hiding both the front camera and Face ID completely under the screen.

Previous Reports On Under-Display Face ID in iPhones

Digital Chat Station has a solid track record when it comes to Apple leaks and the timeline seems believable especially since similar rumours have surfaced before.

Earlier this year, an Apple patent revealed a possible fix for the biggest challenge with under-display Face ID, which was the infrared light doesn’t pass easily through display panels. Apple’s solution was reportedly to remove certain subpixels in a way that users won’t notice.

Recently, a report from The Information also mentioned that Apple plans to introduce this tech in the iPhone 18 Pro models. Meanwhile, a company rumoured to be working with Apple on this tech recently said it expects its solution to appear in a phone launching in 2026.

The Information’s Wayne Ma wrote, “The design of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will include only a small hole cutout in the top-left corner to accommodate the front-facing camera, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter. This design is a precursor to at least one 2027 iPhone model that will place the front-facing camera underneath the screen to enable a truly edge-to-edge display, two of the people said. Such a move would coincide with the 20-year anniversary of the first iPhone”

Digital Chat Station too has also previously hinted that this tech might even tie into Apple’s rumoured foldable iPhone. “Here is a heavyweight exclusive information, Apple folding screen. Inner screen [has] under-screen camera technology. inner screen – 7.76″± 27131920p-under-screen camera technology

image

outer screen – 5.49″±20881422p-screen hole solution,” DCS posted.

Now, based on what they’re hearing from the supply chain, it looks like Apple is aiming for a full rollout in 2027.

Back in late 2023, there were even reports that under-display Face ID could show up as early as the iPhone 18.

It is important to note that this kind of upgrade isn’t easy. Apple’s suppliers face real challenges when it comes to fitting Face ID’s infrared dot projectors and sensors under a backlit screen. If the technology doesn’t work perfectly, Apple might have to explore other ways to handle biometric security. Still, a 2026 launch window for under-display Face ID seems realistic.

FAQs

Q1. When will Apple introduce under-display Face ID?

Answer. Apple is expected to move Face ID under the screen starting with the iPhone 18 in 2026. By 2027, the iPhone 19 could completely hide all front-facing sensors under the display.

Q2. What design changes are planned for the iPhone 18 and iPhone 19?

Answer. The iPhone 18 is expected to adopt a punch-hole screen, housing the front camera while moving Face ID beneath the display. By the time the iPhone 19 launches, Apple may introduce a seamless full-screen design with no visible interruptions.

Q3. What challenges does Apple face in implementing under-display Face ID?

Answer. A key challenge is placing Face ID’s infrared dot projectors and sensors under a backlit screen. Apple has been working on solutions, including removing certain subpixels, to ensure reliable functionality.

Apple is reportedly testing a powerful 200-megapixel camera sensor, which could completely change how future iPhones handle photography. If this pans out, it might be one of the biggest upgrades in years. A recent leak suggests that this high-resolution sensor could show up in a future iPhone with talk of major design changes coming over the next few years. Here’s what we know.

Apple Testing 200MP Camera

According to popular Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station, Apple is currently testing this 200MP sensor, which is likely meant for the main camera of a future iPhone. We know that the iPhone 17 lineup is set to launch in 2025 and has already locked in design-wise. This means the next-gen 200MP sensor could debut in the iPhone 19, which would arrive in 2027 marking the iPhone’s 20th anniversary.

There aren’t any more details at the moment. No information was shared on the exact sensor or which model it’ll go into, but it’s a big deal nonetheless.

Among Apple’s rivals, Samsung has been using 200MP sensors in its Ultra phones and now the S25 Edge, while most other brands have only experimented with them occasionally.

Expected iPhone Design Changes

In a separate leak, the same tipster also hinted at some bold design changes over the next three iPhone generations.

For the iPhone 18, Apple may go with a hole-punch screen and put Face ID under the display. By the time the iPhone 19 rolls around, we could see a true full-screen design with both the front camera and Face ID hidden beneath the screen. If that’s true, iPhones could be heading for a much cleaner, more immersive look.

Meanwhile, details about the upcoming iPhone 17 series are starting to surface. The iPhone 17 Air is rumored to be just 5.5mm to 5.6mm thick and will come with a “horizontal runway” camera layout, making it super slim and sleek. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will stick with a design similar to the iPhone 16 Pro but will add a new “camera bar” on the back for a fresh twist.

With Apple testing a 200MP sensor and exploring futuristic display tech, it looks like the company is preparing for a big leap in both camera performance and overall design.

FAQs

Q1. Is Apple working on a 200MP camera for future iPhones?

Q2. What design changes are coming to the iPhone?

Answer. Apple is rumoured to introduce a hole-punch display with under-display Face ID in the iPhone 18. By the iPhone 19, it could feature a full-screen design with both the front camera and Face ID hidden beneath the display for a cleaner and more immersive look.

Q3. What are the expected changes in the iPhone 17 lineup?

Motorola might be getting ready to launch its new Moto G86 soon. Recent leaks have given us a pretty good idea of what to expect. According to reports, the phone recently appeared on China’s TENAA certification database under the name S60 Neo, which is believed to be a rebranded version of the G86.  If true, it seems Motorola is repeating something similar to how the S50 Neo was rebranded as the Moto G85. In any case, here’s everything we know.

S60 Neo/Moto G86 – TENAA Certification and Key Specs

The phone with model number XT2527-3 has been certified by TENAA (certificate number 02-B478-251545).

Popular tipster Anvin recently confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) about the certification and shared key details of the upcoming phone. According to Anvin’s post based on TENNA certification, the phpne will feature a 6.67-inch OLED display, likely a pOLED panel with 1.5K resolution and probably a 120Hz refresh rate.

The post also revealed that we will have a 2.5GHz chipset powering the device. It could be the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 with likely RAM options such as 8GB, 10GB, 12GB and 16GB. Meanwhile, the storage could go as high as 1TB, starting from 128GB.

Camera-wise, expect a 50MP main sensor with OIS (Sony LYT-600), an 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 32MP front-facing camera for selfies. The phone also comes with a 6520mAh rated battery (6720mAh typical), although in some markets it may have a 5200mAh unit.

Additional features include an under-display fingerprint scanner, microSD card support and reportedly IP68/IP69 water and dust resistance, along with MIL-STD-810H military-grade durability. You’ll also get stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos and 33W wired fast charging.

The phone measures 161.21 x 74.74 x 8.65 mm and weighs around 192 grams.

Moto G86 – Design and Colours

In a separate leak, the renders of Moto G86 in four colour variants appeared on X. Tipster Sudhanshu Ambhore posted multiple renders on Moto G86 revealing the complete design of the device in different colours.

According to Ambhor’s post, the phone will launch in four colours including the following

  • Spellbound (Dark Blue)
  • Golden Cypress (Greenish)
  • Chrysanthemum (Red)
  • Cosmic Sky (Light Purple)

The design sticks to Motorola’s recent styling with flat rear and side panels, a flat display with slim bezels and a centred punch-hole selfie camera. On the back, the camera module blends into the body and houses three camera sensors and an LED flash.

You’ll find volume and power buttons on the right, a card tray on the left, and speaker grilles, USB-C port, and microphone at the bottom.

Interestingly, the back panel uses three different materials of what look like vegan leather, textured plastic and velvet-like fabric.

Moto G86 – Launch Timeline

Apart from TENAA, the Moto G86 has also reportedly been spotted on the FCC and EEC certification sites. This, along with the growing number of leaks, suggests the official launch might happen soon.

Meanwhile, Motorola is yet to reveal anything officially.
