COVID-19 Vaccination: Tower body calls for giving priority to field staff

0

The Tower and Infrastructure Providers Association (TAIPA) has requested the National Health Authority (NHA) to include telecom infrastructure personnel under ‘frontline worker’ status for administering the COVID-19 vaccine on priority.

The development comes at a time when the entire nation is battling the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic, which is relatively severe than the first wave of infection and has prompted states to impose strict curbs, including partial and full lockdowns to control the spread.

In a letter to R.S. Sharma, CEO, National Health Authority, T.R. Dua, Director-General, TAIPA, said, “The frontline workers in the telecom infrastructure industry, consisting of direct and indirect employees have ensured continuity of routine activities – power, diesel filling and attended to routine maintenance/ emergency faults – risking their own lives. They have been working in the toughest of times across all types of zones including the COVID-19 hotspots and therefore need to be considered for vaccination on priority.”

The apex telecom tower body, which represents companies like Indus Towers, ATC, Sterlite Technologies, among others, highlighted telecom infrastructure providers are maintaining services on a regular basis despite the serious risks posed to them and their families. “It is essential that they are given priority irrespective of their age group, for administering the COVID-19 prevention vaccine in all the states.”

Highlighting the role of telecom infrastructure workers, Dua said, “The telecom infrastructure provider industry has huge manpower consisting of frontline workers (technicians and field engineers) who have been working tirelessly during lockdowns to maintain the 24×7 telecom services to enable uninterrupted Work-From-Home, online education, e-health, and various Governmental services to the citizens across the country.”

Airtel comes up with new corporate structure to sharpen focus on digital

0

Telecom major Airtel has introduced a new corporate structure, which is expected to sharpen the focus of the company in driving the rapidly unfolding digital opportunity in India while enabling it to unlock value.

The new structure envisages Airtel Digital Limited folding into the listed entity, Bharti Airtel. This will now house all of the digital assets spanning Wynk Music, Airtel X stream, Airtel Thanks, Mitra Payments platform used by a million retailers, Airtel Ads, Airtel IQ, Airtel Secure, Airtel Cloud and all future digital products and services.

The digital ambition of Bharti Airtel is closely intertwined with the spine that connectivity provides across the country. It is therefore intended to house all the telecom businesses in a newly-created entity, Airtel Limited – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bharti Airtel.

Bharti Telemedia, the 100% arm operating DTH services will sit alongside Airtel Limited for now. It is intended to eventually fold the DTH business into Airtel Limited to move towards the NDCP vision of converged services to customers. The company has moved the government to seek clarity on licensing policy given that carriage i.e. telecom and DTH is currently being regulated and managed under two separate ministries of Communications and I&B respectively.

Airtel Payments Bank will remain a separate entity under Bharti Airtel and work closely with the growing customer base to play a pivotal role in realising the digital opportunity that payments and financial services provide.

All of the company’s infrastructure businesses such as Nxtra and Indus Towers will continue to remain in separate entities as they are currently. So will international subsidiaries and affiliates.

The Board in its meeting held yesterday approved the scheme enabling the company to file for all statutory approvals to give effect to the proposed rearrangement.

Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman, Bharti Airtel, said, “The new structure sets the exciting future course for Bharti Airtel and provides focus on the four distinct businesses – Digital, India, International and Infrastructure, each, in a razor sharp way. We believe this will provide agility, expertise and operational rigour to serve our customers brilliantly while providing flexibility to unlock value for our shareholders. This structure will serve us well over the coming years and is a win-win for all stakeholders.”

Samsung announces Galaxy Unpacked event, all set to launch “most powerful Galaxy” device

0

The South Korean tech giant, Samsung, has announced its next “Galaxy Unpacked” event for 28th April. Teasing the device, the company reveals that it is the “most powerful Galaxy” but the actual device remains unknown.

As per the official announcement, the event will be live-streamed on the official Samsung website at 7:00 pm IST. This will be the company’s third ‘Unpacked’ event this year after it hosted one in January for the Galaxy S21 lineup and another in March for the launch of Galaxy A-series smartphones.

The company has already launched the Galaxy S-series flagship lineup and the Galaxy Note series usually launches in the month of August. Thus, the device getting launched at this event could be a laptop.

According to previous reports, the company had plans of launching a new Galaxy laptop, including Chromebooks. So, the upcoming event could be related to that. Going by the tagline of the event, the launch of mid-range smartphones seems unlikely.

Samsung is also expected to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 3 phone, but the teased video shows a box too wide for a smartphone. So, there is a good chance that the rumored new laptops — possibly the Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360 — could come with 5G connectivity, OLED screens, S-Pen support, and other high-end specifications.

Vivo surpasses Oppo to lead China smartphone market

0

The battle for supremacy in China’s smartphone market is heating up, with the top spot changing hands in quick succession. Vivo has risen to the top spot in the world’s largest handset market for the first time, surpassing its nearest competitor Oppo due to a consumer-friendly product line-up, according Counterpoint’s China Smartphone Weekly Tracker.

Riding on the continued strong performance of its newly-launched budget model Y3 and S9, Vivo was able to jump ahead of Oppo during week 11 (March 8-14) and again in week 13.

Vivo was one of the first brands in the market to launch 5G devices, with the Nex 3 5G and iQOO Pro 5G in August 2019 and September 2019, respectively. Vivo has grown its 5G portfolio quickly to account for more than 76% of its sales in February 2021, from a mere 0.5% in August 2019, said the Counterpoint report.

According to the report, Vivo’s clear product positioning has paid off. Currently, Vivo’s portfolio includes the NEX, X, S, Y series, and sub-brand iQOO. The NEX and X series are Vivo’s flagship series focused on camera capabilities while the S and U series are focused on good value for money. Y is focused on budget customers while the iQOO is focused on online channels. In addition, Vivo has been putting more efforts into enhancing its camera capabilities through a strategic partnership with German optical expert Carl Zeiss.

Oppo had been aggressive in January and February this year and became the No.1 smartphone brand in China with the successful rebranding of Reno series and the strong momentum of A series in the mid-segment.

Ever since Huawei started to struggle due to US restrictions on the company, other Chinese smartphone manufacturers have been eager to take advantage. Commenting on the market dynamics, Senior Analyst Yang Wang, said, “Vivo and Oppo are adopting aggressive market and product strategies, and we expect to see the two brands continue to jostle for the top spot in 2021.”

PhonePe mulling entry into stockbroking business

Homegrown digital payments company PhonePe is reportedly planning to enter the stockbroking business. This move of PhonePe is said to intensify the battle for market share in the super competitive industry.

According to reports quoting sources with direct knowledge of the matter, the company is awaiting a stockbroking licence from Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

The Bengaluru-headquartered fintech startup aims to tap its existing customer base to leapfrog established rivals in the broking business, said reports. It will encourage customers to put a fraction of the unutilised funds in wallets into markets, sources were quoted as saying.

PhonePe processed 1.19 billion Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions worth Rs 2.31 lakh crore in March, cornering 44% of the UPI market, even as its closest rival Google Pay with 957 million transactions had a share of 35%, as per reports.

The development comes at a time when PhonePe has been asked to moderate its volume on UPI to comply with National Payments Corporation of India’s (NPCI’s) new rules for third-party applications that requires a single entity to cap market share at 30%.

upGrad & AR pioneer EyeWay Vision partner to create one-of-a-kind AR learning experience

0

upGrad, South Asia’s largest online higher education company, and EyeWay Vision today announced their partnership, enabling upGrad to become the first Indian edtech company with an enhanced AR-driven learning experience.

EyeWay Vision Ltd, an Israeli company developing an innovative wearable augmented reality platform, will bring one-of-a-kind immersive augmented reality (AR) to upGrad learners.

The global e-learning market was estimated at US $144 billion in 2019 and is forecast to reach US $374.3 billion by 2026, according to market research firm Facts and Factors. The market for virtual and augmented reality is forecast to reach more than $67 billion globally by 2024, according to AR/VR analyst firm Digi-Capital. upGrad has more than one million learners in more than 50 countries and has recorded an annual revenue run-rate of 165 Million USD for fiscal year 2021.

Nikhil Balram, CEO of subsidiary company EyeWay Vision Inc said, “Partnering with upGrad is the perfect opportunity to apply EyeWay’s advanced AR technology to enhance the whole learning experience by making it unprecedentedly immersive and distraction-free, gamifying online learning for high course completion rates. EyeWay’s exceptional AR uses eye tracking, direct retinal projection and foveated projection to produce a tenfold improvement in visual enhancement. This can disrupt multi-billion-dollar markets like educational technology where an impeccable visual experience is a key to user value.”

The Israeli AR pioneer is developing products based on advanced immersive AR technology, enabling new forms of immersive entertainment, digital learning, e-commerce, and other enterprise applications. Both EyeWay Vision & upGrad share a common vision of creating greatly enhanced immersive learning experiences that customers can access anytime and anywhere.

Ronnie Screwvala & Phalgun Kompalli, Co-founders upGrad, said in a joint statement, “At upGrad, we believe in bringing the best and the latest technology to enhance the learning experience for our learners. The partnership with EyeWay Vision is a path-breaking step wherein we look at developing an augmented three-dimensional interactive learning environment to keep our learners engaged. Not only would this move disrupt the edtech market at large but it would also contribute towards our vision of making world-class education mainstream.”

The EyeWay Vision prototype offers a very high dynamic range, with brightness ranging from ultra-bright 20 thousand nits down to a very low black level of 0.1 nits, allowing it to be used indoors and outdoors in all kinds of lighting. It offers an extremely wide color gamut (Rec 2020), retinal resolution, naturally wide field of view and dynamic focusing, presenting rich and natural digital content that looks completely realistic. The prototype is expected to be available towards the fourth quarter of 2021.

Jeremy Bailenson, VR professor at Stanford University, founding director of Stanford’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab, and EyeWay Vision advisory board member said, “If there is one thing the pandemic has taught us, it is that digital learning works and is here to stay. The next phase of this virtual revolution will be to leverage more immersive technology. While AR has shown promise to be a tremendous tool for learning, it hasn’t yet taken off due to limitations around field of view, the brightness and color range of images, and resolution. Eyeway Vision has created an incredible system to overcome these challenges, and there is nothing else like it on the market today. I am excited for digital learning to become more immersive, and to help Eyeway Vision become a leader in this space.”

Through this partnership, upGrad will leverage EyeWay’s customized system to explore the development of AR-enhanced learning experiences and online programs. At an advanced stage, EyeWay and upGrad may include university partners to join in a pilot program. This move can make upGrad the first Indian edtech company and one of the very few globally to incorporate mixed reality to enhance the learning experiences of its online learners. EyeWay is currently developing an immersive AR head-worn prototype. This prototype will be used to enable an immersive AR learning experience that will further be developed by upGrad and its content partners.
