WhatsApp Tips: How to backup, restore chats to Google Drive

0

WhatsApp is unarguably one of the most convenient instant messaging apps in the world. People across time zones and age groups use the platform to share special moments with their family and friends in the form of messages, images, videos, and statuses. But sometimes while switching to a new smartphone or formatting your phone, it so happens those moments stand a chance of getting lost. Good news is that there’s no need to worry about losing chats as you can backup and restore them to a new device just as easily as you have those conversations.

The Facebook-owned messaging app allows users to easily backup all your chats to Google Drive. You will need a Google account activated as well as Google Play services installed on your smartphone in order to use Google Drive backup. Here’s a quick guide on how to backup WhatsApp chats and restore them.

How to back up chats to Google Drive

Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your Android smartphone and go to the ‘Settings’ section

Step 2: Now click on Chats > Chat backup > Backup to Google Drive

Step 3: Pick up a backup frequency other than Never

Step 4: Once you choose a backup frequency, select the Google account you would want to back up your chat history to. If you don’t have a Google account connected, you can tap on Add account when prompted and enter your login credentials

Step 5: Now, under ‘Backup Over’ option, you can pick if you want backup to take place only when you are connected to Wi-Fi or not

Step 6: Lastly hit the ‘Backup Chats’ options to save all your chats to Google Drive

How to restore chat history

In order to restore the chats, users need to use the same smartphone number and Google account used to create the backup. Here’s how to do:

Step 1: Re-install WhatsApp on your Android smartphone, so that you can restore chats through Google Drive

Step 2: Open the app and verify your number

Step 3: After the completion of restoration process, tap Next. Then, your chats will be displayed once initialization is complete

Note: In case you are unaware, as per WhatsApp, your mobile phone only stores up to the last seven days worth of local back up files. So, backing up files in Google Drive would be a better option.

WhatsApp testing a feature to let you report specific messages

Facebook-owned instant messaging app is testing a new feature to allow users to report a single message instead of full chat on the platform. At present, WhatsApp only allows users to report individuals and businesses on the basis of complete chats. The new feature is being tested with beta testers on Android and iOS devices. This comes as an attempt to curb spam and abusive messages on the instant messaging app – something that has posed a big problem for the platform.

In a post, the feature was discovered by WhatsApp beta tracker WABetaInfo in WhatsApp for iOS beta versions 2.21.190.12 and 2.21.190.11. It is said that user reports will allow the app to forward only the reported messages to WhatsApp and notify the sender about it. The report suggests that this reporting process will be different from the current one, where the recent five messages are forwarded to WhatsApp when a user reports a business on the basis of entire chat.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp’s beta version users can see a new “Report” option when they press and hold a particular message. WABetaInfo has also detected the individual message reporting feature on recent WhatsApp for Android beta releases.

On Android, the feature was found in WhatsApp beta version 2.21.20.1 for many beta testers. Users will be able to report a single message by long pressing on the message and clicking on the three-dot menu in the upper right corner of the screen, and then selecting “Report”.

It is unknown as to when this feature will be rolled out to the general public. As per the WABetaInfo report, the feature is “rolling out” for both Android and iPhone users. The report shows that WhatsApp is currently rolling out the feature, but if it is not visible to the users, they have to wait for the next update.

Aisle, India’s second most downloaded dating app, has launched its vernacular dating app ‘Neetho’, for Telugu singles residing in and out of India. Neetho which means ‘With You’ in Telugu, will offer personalised dating experience for Telugu singles.

Telugu pop culture and films have always encouraged love marriages and finding life partners independently but the singles of the region did not have a platform to explore their options. This gap that existed led to the launch of ‘Neetho’.

Neetho does not have any geographical limitations and connects Telugus from all parts of the world. All features on ‘Neetho’ are tailored to the likes of Telugu singles including fun icebreakers which have Telugu pop culture references. On Neetho, users can also send audio Invites in addition to the text Invites to express their interest in other members.

The launch of Neetho is in line with Aisle’s vision of building customised regional dating and creating a native dating experience. Aisle’s portfolio of apps currently include high intent dating app Aisle and vernacular apps ‘Arike’, ‘Anbe’ and ‘Neetho’. Over the last two years, Aisle’s revenue has grown by 70%, while the revenue from newly launched vernacular apps is growing 30% month on month. With the launch of these apps, Aisle has taken the first steps towards building a vernacular dating landscape by offering users a customised app suited to a region’s culture and habit. The company aims to launch one more vernacular app besides the three existing ones, by the end of 2021.

Able Joseph, Founder and CEO, Aisle said, “Arike & Anbe, the dating apps we launched for Malayalis and Tamilians respectively, exceeded our growth expectations. We are now certain about the need for region specific dating apps. With the launch of Neetho, we have taken the first step in customising the dating experience for Telugu singles who are looking for long-term relationships. As a market leader in high-intent dating, we want to continue to create new experiences that help users meet someone special.”

Aisle has been expanding its portfolio from region-to-region, in order to tap the segments where the proposition to build a high intent dating app exists. Recently, the company announced that it has crossed a 6.5 million user base on its portfolio of apps. During the pandemic, Aisle introduced an interact before matching feature called ‘Rooms’ and priority-based matchmaking feature ‘Concierge’. Early this year, Aisle closed its pre-Series A funding round, led by Anas Rahman, Founder & MD of Hurun India, and Vinod Jose, Founder of Konglo Ventures and other angel/existing investors.

Semiconductor market to grow by 17.3% in 2021 and reach potential overcapacity by 2023: IDC

0

The semiconductor market is expected to grow by 17.3% in 2021 in comparison to 10.8% in 2020. According to IDC, the industry will see normalization and balance by the middle of 2022, with a potential for overcapacity in 2023 as larger scale capacity expansions begin to come online towards the end of 2022.

Growth is driven by mobile phones, notebooks, servers, automotive, smart home, gaming, wearables, and Wi-Fi access points, with increased memory pricing. IC shortages are also expected to continue easing through 4Q21 as capacity additions accelerate.

“The semiconductor content story is intact and not only does it benefit the semiconductor companies, but the unit volume growth in many of the markets that they serve will also continue to drive very good growth for the semiconductor market,” said Mario Morales, Group Vice President, Enabling Technologies and Semiconductors at IDC.

Semiconductor-Market-Overview-2021-IDC

Despite the current COVID-19 wave, consumption remains healthy. IDC reports that dedicated foundries have been allocated for the rest of the year, with capacity utilization at nearly 100%. Front-end capacity remains tight but fabless suppliers are getting the production they need from their foundry partner. Front-end manufacturing is starting to meet demand in 3Q, however, larger issues and shortages will remain in back-end manufacturing and materials.

According to IDC, 5G semiconductor revenues will increase by 128%, with total mobile phone semiconductors expected to grow by 28.5%. Game consoles, smart home, and wearables will grow +34%, 20%, 21% respectively. Automotive semiconductor revenues will also increase by 22.8% as shortages are mitigated by year end. Notebook semiconductor revenues will grow by 11.8%, while X86 Server semi revenues will increase by 24.6%.

Semiconductor wafer prices increased in 1H21 and IDC expects increases to continue for the rest of 2021 due to material costs and opportunity cost in mature process technologies.

Overall, IDC predicts the semiconductor market to reach $600 billion by 2025 – representing a CAGR of 5.3% through the forecast period. This is higher than the typical 3-4% mature growth seen historically.
