Jio has been the disruptor in the telecom space in India
Reliance Jio, India’s largest mobile operator, has continued its growth trajectory by adding 32.4 lakh users in August 2023.
This increase in subscribers further solidifies Jio’s position in the Indian telecom market, as detailed in the latest data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).
As per a report by PTI, In August, Jio’s wireless subscriber count rose impressively to over 44.57 crore, marking a significant milestone in its operational history.
Despite a slight decrease from July’s 39 lakh additions, this growth underscores Jio’s continued dominance in the sector.
While Jio made significant gains, Bharti Airtel also saw an increase in its wireless subscriber base, adding 12.17 lakh users in August.
This growth brought Airtel’s total subscriber count to 37.64 crore.
Conversely, Vodafone Idea (Vi) experienced a decline, losing 49,782 users, and its subscriber base dipped to 22.82 crore.
August also witnessed a notable number of subscribers (12.67 million) opting for Mobile Number Portability (MNP).
This increase brought the cumulative MNP requests to 87.7 crore at August’s end, up from 86.4 crore at the end of July, indicating a dynamic shift in user preferences.
The broadband sector also saw growth, with total subscribers reaching 87.6 crore, a 0.96% increase from the previous month.
Dominating this segment were service providers like Reliance Jio Infocomm, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), constituting 98.35% of the market share.
In the wireline segment, Jio and Bharti Airtel continued to add subscribers.
Jio added 1.78 lakh wireline subscribers, and Airtel’s net addition stood at 1.16 lakh in August, contributing to the overall increase in wireline subscribers to over 3 crore.
In August 2023, Jio added 32.4 lakh subscribers, cementing its status as India’s largest mobile operator. This growth is a part of Jio’s continued expansion in the Indian telecom market.
Bharti Airtel also experienced growth, adding 12.17 lakh subscribers in August 2023. In contrast, Vodafone Idea saw a decline, losing 49,782 users, reflecting the competitive nature of the telecom sector.
Mobile Number Portability (MNP) requests significantly increased to 87.7 crore by the end of August 2023, up from 86.4 crore in July. This rise indicates a notable shift in consumer preferences within the telecom sector.
