India announces USB Type-C Compulsory for all smartphones from March 2025: These Devices Might be Ruled Out

India has made it official that USB Type-C Charging will become mandatory for all smartphones and other devices from March 2025, which was officially announced a couple of days back by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

BIS has also set quality benchmarks for the charging port, while the Consumer Affairs department has asked all device manufacturers to put in their products for USB Type-C chargers, while the government brings in two types of common charging ports.

Highlights

  • The European Union Commission (EUC) had proposed a legislation in 2021 to establish a common charging port for all electronic devices.
  • EUC had announced the legislation to curb consumer inconvenience and e-waste that had become rampant over the past few years.
  • Central Consumer Protection Authority also formed a subgroup comprising of educational institutions and industry representatives so that the role could be enacted very soon.

India to Make USB Type-C Charging Compulsory for All Devices from March 2025

Following a major legislative proposal from the European Union Commission (EUC) to have a single charging port for all electronic devices back in 2021, India recently announced that all USB Type-C port will be made compulsory for all smartphones from March 2025.

It was the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) that took the decision as it mandated the use of a single charging port for all devices as it feels that the new rule will prove to be a quality benchmark for the charging port, for which the Consumer Affairs department has instructed all device manufacturers to implement.

Following BIS’s decision, the central government will soon be coming up with two types of charging ports for smartphones and other wearable devices as the BIS has already notified all standards for Type-C ports.

March 2025 will be the deadline that the government has chosen after massive consultations with industry stakeholders, educational institutions, and representatives as the Central Consumer Protection Authority set up a sub-group for studying the feasibility of a uniform charging port.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has claimed that a uniform charging port will be a fruitful steps towards ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ (LiFE) mission, which was launched by him at the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland.
