Huawei brought out their newest mobile phones lately, the Pura 70 series.
Lots got updated, enhanced, and talked about as compared to the previous generation, like a zoom lens that pulls in, but the biggest thing by far is a new way to send pictures when your mobile signal is no good – Satellite+.
It’s the first regular phone that can beam pictures through satellites if you’ve no phone service.
Last autumn, Huawei unveiled the Mate 60 Pro as the first to allow actual phone calls via satellite too.
This fresh talent is also in the top Pura 70 Ultra model.
Sending pics by satellite squashes the file size down really small, on account of the limited data speeds.
So the pictures might look blurred or distorted.
That’s why it’s just meant for emergencies when you’re stuck somewhere with no mobile coverage.
To use it properly, both phones need a special app named Changlian.
If the receiving phone hasn’t got it, Bruce Lee from Huawei says they’ll just see a plain text note instead.
Still, it’s a mighty big step forward if it can show your location clearly to get help coming your way sharpish in a pickle.
Apple made satellites usable first, with smart software guiding you to point your iPhone at an overhead satellite you can’t even see.
Plenty of stories out there about lives saved that way.
Other Pura 70 treats include a 6.8-inch OLED screen that auto-adjusts refresh rates from 1-120Hz, an under-screen fingerprint sensor, tough Kunlun glass, and a 5,200mAh battery with 20W reverse wireless charging along with 100W wired/80W wireless charging.
The phone packs in the upgraded Kirin 9010 chip and for optics you get a 50MP main camera with a zoom lens, 40MP wide-angle, and 50MP telephoto macro.
For connectivity options, you get 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, IR blaster and those satellite call/message talents – all running Harmony OS 4.2.
