Google’s ambitious plans for its Tensor G5 chip have taken a significant leap forward.
Recent reports suggest that the tech giant has completed the design process for the SoC that is likely set to power the Pixel 10 series in 2025.
According to Taiwan’s Commercial Times, the Tensor G5 has completed its design phase and is now ready for production.
This stage, known as “tape out,” is a significant milestone in chip development.
It means Google can now send the design to a foundry for fabrication, allowing ample time for testing and potential refinements before the Pixel 10’s expected 2025 launch.
The completion of this phase gives Google nearly a year to thoroughly test the chip for performance and efficiency.
Unlike previous Tensor chips, which were based on Samsung’s Exynos designs, the G5 is reportedly Google’s first fully custom silicon for Pixel phones.
By developing its own chip from the ground up, Google can tailor the Tensor G5’s performance characteristics to better suit the specific needs of Pixel devices.
This could lead to significant improvements in areas where previous Tensor chips have faced criticism, such as battery life optimization and thermal management.
Google has reportedly partnered with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for the Tensor G5’s production.
This collaboration will utilize TSMC’s second-generation 3nm node (N3E), which offers several potential advantages over previous manufacturing processes.
The move to a more advanced manufacturing node could result in a smaller chip size with improved power efficiency.
Additionally, the ability to pack more transistors into a smaller area could lead to significant performance gains, especially for AI and machine learning tasks that are central to Google’s smartphone strategy.
While the Tensor G5 is still a year away from its debut, Google’s nearer-term plans are also taking shape.
The Pixel 9 series, expected to launch on August 13, 2024, will likely feature the Tensor G4 chip.
This intermediate step will still be based on Samsung’s designs, making the Tensor G5 the true beginning of Google’s fully custom chip era.

This extended development period could result in a more polished and capable Pixel 10 series when it launches in 2025, potentially setting a new standard for Android smartphones.
