Google has just revealed Material 3 Expressive, a major design upgrade for Android and Wear OS. Announced a week ahead of the I/O 2025 event, Google says this is one of the platform’s biggest design updates in years.

The new look is all about smoother animations, deeper personalisation, better glanceability and a more consistent feel across Android phones, tablets and smartwatches. Here’s what we know.

Material 3 Expressive – What’s New?

The update brings in fluid and springy animations that aim to make everyday interactions feel more delightful. For example:

  • Notification Dismissal – When you swipe away a notification, nearby notifications gently react, and there’s a satisfying haptic feedback to go with it. The notification shade now has a blurred background, helping you stay focused while still seeing what’s going on behind.
  • System-wide Feedback – You’ll notice similar visual and tactile feedback across the OS, whether you’re dismissing recent apps, adjusting volume, or pulling down the shade.
  • You can now pin more quick actions like Flashlight or Do Not Disturb in a compact format for faster access.

One of the coolest new features is Live Updates. Apps like Uber Eats will now show real-time progress updates right on your lock screen and notification shade, so you can keep track of deliveries, rides, or maps without opening the app.

Google is also updating core apps like Google Photos and Gmail to match the new Material 3 Expressive style. These will now follow your system’s colour and style preferences, offering a more unified look.

Material 3 Expressive Coming to Wear OS Too

Material 3 Expressive is also coming to smartwatches with Wear OS 6.

Google has tweaked the design for round screens, bringing animations that follow the curve of the display. You’ll notice:

  • A new look for things like the pin pad and media controls, now with responsive motion.
  • The watch face theme you pick now applies across the entire interface for a more seamless feel.
  • New glanceable buttons that stretch to fit the screen and are easier to tap.
  • Refreshed tiles give you quick access to things like messaging or starting a workout.

Thanks to system optimisations, Wear OS 6 should also bring up to 10% better battery life.

Material 3 Expressive – Rollout Timeline

Material 3 Expressive will roll out with Android 16 and Wear OS 6 later this year, starting with Pixel devices. Google is also working with partners to bring these design upgrades to more Android and Wear OS devices soon.
