At Made by Google 2025, Google unveiled its next-generation AI assistant designed to change how users interact with their smart homes. Gemini for Home is built on Google’s most advanced Gemini models and offers more natural, intelligent, and personalised help across everyday tasks. You can use for media playback and device control to cooking and troubleshooting.
“Now, we’re introducing an all-new voice assistant for the next generation of help at home: Gemini for Home. Gemini for Home is built on the same powerful AI models, with unique capabilities designed for the home. It offers reliable, hands-free help and can manage complex tasks across all of your home devices, assisting every member of your household, as well as visitors and guests,” the company said.
Google confirmed that Gemini for Home will gradually replace Google Assistant on Nest speakers and displays. While users can still say “Hey Google” to activate it, Gemini offers deeper reasoning, advanced search, and smoother, more intuitive conversations.
The new platform also introduces Gemini Livei, which enables continuous back-and-forth dialogue without repeating the wake word.
“Kick off a Gemini Live conversation with ‘Hey Google, let’s chat’ and from that point on, have a natural back-and-forth discussion (no more ‘Hey Google’ required). Explore new concepts, learn a skill, brainstorm ideas or get personalised advice. You can also interrupt responses to refine or redirect the discussion, so you get the specific information you’re looking for quickly,” Google explained.
Alongside Gemini for Home, Google teased a new smart speaker. The device has a compact, squished-sphere design reminiscent of the Nest Wifi, with a glowing blue-purple-white ring at its base, likely signaling Gemini’s presence. While specifications and release details are yet to be announced, the design points toward a fresh hardware direction to complement Gemini’s advanced capabilities.
Google confirmed that early access to Gemini for Home will begin in October, with both free and paid versions rolling out.
Beyond Gemini, Google also announced a major upgrade for Google Photos during the event. The app will soon support conversational editing, allowing users to improve photos simply by describing the changes they want.
“We’re making it unbelievably easy to quickly edit your images in Google Photos ― just ask Photos to edit your pictures for you. Coming first to Pixel 10 in the U.S., you can simply describe the edits you want to make by text or voice in Photos’ editor, and watch the changes appear,” said Google.
Powered by Gemini AI, users can issue prompts like “remove the cars in the background” or “restore this old photo,” and the app will apply the edits automatically. Multiple edits can be done in one go with commands like “remove reflections and fix the washed-out colours.” A simple “make it better” prompt triggers intelligent auto-enhancements.
Beyond corrections such as lighting fixes and distraction removal, Google Photos can also handle creative edits like changing backgrounds, adding items such as sunglasses or party hats, and more.
Google Photos will also support C2PA Content Credentials, which indicate whether an image was captured or AI-modified.
