Google might be adding a sleep timer to the YouTube app for Android.
This feature has been spotted in a recent APK teardown of the app.
The sleep timer would let users set a time limit for video playback.
After the set time, playback would stop automatically.
Users might be able to set the timer in hours or minutes.
YouTube Music already has a sleep timer.
It was added in February 2023, allowing users to set timers for 5, 15, 30 minutes, or an hour.
The YouTube app version might offer more flexibility in setting custom times.
When the timer is close to ending, users might be able to reset it or choose to keep watching.
A notification showing the countdown could appear in the notification shade.
Netflix tested a similar feature in 2021 but later removed it.
Other popular video streaming services don’t currently offer sleep timers.
The sleep timer for YouTube is still in development.
There’s no set date for when it might be released.
Based on past experience with YouTube Music, it could take several months before the feature is available to users.
When released, the feature is likely to be available on both Android and iOS versions of the YouTube app.
However, it probably won’t be added to the web version or other devices.
This addition would bring YouTube in line with many music apps that already offer sleep timers.
It could be particularly useful for people who like to fall asleep while watching videos.
The feature was discovered in version 19.25.33 of the YouTube Android app.
However, being in development doesn’t guarantee its release.
Google may still decide to change or cancel the feature before it reaches users.
The sleep timer feature will allow users to set a time limit for video playback, automatically stopping the video once the timer ends.
While the feature is still in development, users might be able to set the timer in hours or minutes directly within the app.
The sleep timer is expected to be available on both Android and iOS versions of the YouTube app, but likely not on the web version or other devices.
There is no confirmed release date for the sleep timer feature. It is still in development and may take several months to become available.
