Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 With Improved Drop Resistance on Rough Surfaces Launched

Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, claimed to be an improved version of its predecessor, has been officially announced. This more powerful and durable next generation glass is said to have an even better drop resistance with the ability to protect devices from getting scratched on rougher surfaces such as concrete. Corning, one of the world’s leading specialists in glass, ceramics and related material technologies, announce the launch of the new Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 through an official press statement on its official website.

According to Corning, the new Victus 2 during the lab testing phase manage to survive some of the most extensive drop tests. The new improved version of Gorilla Glass is said to have survived a two metre drop on an asphalt like surface, apart from showing solid resistance against concrete material. Moreover, the glass was able to manage almost four times better scratch resistance as compared to other competitive aluminosilicate glasses.

The official brand statement also quoted the Vice President and General Manager of Gorilla Glass, David Velasquez emphasising the significance of smartphones in our digital lives and how their durability is crucial. Velasquez said, “Smartphones are the centre of our digital lives, and the requirement for exceptional scratch and drop resistance has only increased with our growing reliance on clear, damage-free displays. Surfaces matter and rough surfaces like concrete are everywhere.”

Explaining the process of extensive research behind its technical innovation, Velasquez further said, “We challenged our scientists not only to create a glass composition that was durable enough to better survive drops from waist height onto rougher surfaces than asphalt but to improve cover-glass performance for larger and heavier devices.”

Velasquez further noted in his statement that smartphones today are a lot heavier and more sophisticated than they were a few years ago. This he explains has put extra stress on the smartphone body and the need for the screen glass to have better technology has been constantly felt by the industry.

Velasquez said, “With more sophisticated and varied designs, today’s smartphones are nearly 15% heavier, and screen sizes are up to 10 per cent larger than they were four years ago – increasing both the stress on the cover glass and the probability of damage. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 redefines tough for consumers and OEMs.”

In the announcement statement, Corning also published some key findings of research conducted by its team. According to the research, almost 84 per cent of smartphone users across China, India and the US markets, all three constitute the major smartphone markets in the world, consider the durability of the smartphone as one of the major factors influencing purchase decisions. The brand also highlighted in the statement that Gorilla Glass has already been used by 45 major brands in their eight billion handsets.

Although the brand refrained from providing any official arrival date for Gorilla Glass Victus 2, the technology is currently going through evaluation phases. Multiple customers and stakeholders are evaluating the new improved version of Gorilla Glass that the brand sounded hopeful to have in the market in months’ time.
