OpenAI’s rumoured smartphone project has surfaced online once again with fresh leaks now revealing key details about its launch timeline, chipset, memory, storage and more. According to industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, OpenAI is speeding up its plans to enter the smartphone market with a device centred around “AI agents” instead of the traditional app based smartphone experience.
The report suggests that the OpenAI smartphone could launch in the first half of 2027 around the same period as Samsung’s Galaxy S27 series. However, the company is reportedly positioning the device as a direct competitor to Apple’s future iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
Earlier reports hinted that OpenAI was working with both Qualcomm and MediaTek for chipset development. However, the latest update claims MediaTek has emerged as the leading partner for exclusive chip development.
The smartphone is tipped to feature a customised version of the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 processor built on TSMC’s advanced N2P 2-nanometer process technology. The chip is also expected to use a dual-NPU architecture allowing the device to handle different AI workloads separately. This setup could enable specialised processing for tasks such as vision-based sensing and language reasoning simultaneously.
The handset is also said to include an upgraded HDR Image Signal Processor pipeline designed to improve the phone’s “visual perception.” This would allow the AI agent to continuously analyse and better understand the user’s surroundings in real time.
According to the leak, the OpenAI phone may support LPDDR6 RAM, which is expected to deliver the high bandwidth needed for continuous AI-driven tasks and persistent background processing.
For storage, the device is rumoured to use UFS 5.0 technology to ensure faster read and write speeds. This is expected to help maintain smooth performance during intensive AI operations and multitasking scenarios.
The smartphone is also said to include pKVM (protected Kernel-based Virtual Machine) support to isolate and secure sensitive user information as well as AI-related processes.
Despite the growing number of leaks, the OpenAI smartphone project is still reportedly in the development stage. Final specifications, hardware details, and supply chain information are expected to become clearer closer to launch.
Ming-Chi Kuo’s analysis further claims that OpenAI is targeting production of nearly 30 million AI smartphones between 2027 and 2028. T
The report adds that OpenAI plans to leverage ChatGPT’s massive popularity and existing user base to attract consumers toward its hardware ecosystem.
With ChatGPT already being used by hundreds of millions of weekly active users globally, OpenAI could potentially transition from being primarily a software company into a major hardware platform player.
The strategy reportedly includes bundling the smartphone with subscription-based services to create a more tightly integrated ecosystem.
