Apple has officially launched its Apple TV app including Apple TV+ and MLS Season Pass on Android devices. Previously available on Google TV, the new app now supports a wider range of Android devices including phones, tablets and foldables. Moreover, Android users can subscribe to Apple TV+ and MLS Season Pass through Google Play billing.
Here’s everything you need to know about Apple TV App on Android.
Apple’s streaming service can now reach more users with the recent update, especially in markets where Android is more popular.
To mark the occasion, Apple released a short ad showcasing clips from popular Apple TV+ shows like Ted Lasso, Silo, Severance and The Morning Show. The ad highlights that Apple TV+ offers “thrilling dramas, epic sci-fi, heartwarming comedies, and award-winning originals” and now, it’s all available on Android.
On Apple TV’s official Instagram account, the company also posted multiple frames from Apple TV+ shows with the caption “Now streaming on Android.”
The response from users has been overwhelmingly positive showing there was a strong demand for an Apple TV+ app on Android.
Before this announcement, Apple Music was the only Apple service with a dedicated Android app. While Apple TV+ could be accessed via a web browser, the experience wasn’t ideal. Now, Android users can stream in high resolution and download content for offline viewing with the native app.
Apple TV+ is available on Google Play with a subscription costing $9.99 per month in the U.S. with a 7-day free trial option. New Apple device buyers can get three months free.
Some of the most popular Apple TV+ shows and movies available include –
The Android version of the Apple TV app includes key features like Offline downloads, Saved watchlists, Continue Watching synced with watch history across devices (even if you mix Android and Apple products) and Notifications for new episodes and seasons (though no native push notifications yet).
Friday Night Baseball is also available, giving Android users access to live sports broadcasts.
For soccer fans, MLS Season Pass is available as an optional add-on for $12.99/month or $79 per season. It includes all 30 MLS clubs starting February 22, along with personalised recommendations and a dedicated supporters section for fans to follow their favourite teams.
One key difference between the Android and Apple versions of the app is that Android users don’t have access to the in-app Store, which lets Apple users rent or buy movies and shows.
