Apple’s next iOS 19 update is just a few months away and it appears Apple is working on a live translation feature for AirPods. According to a recent Bloomberg report, this new capability will allow AirPods to translate real-time conversations between different languages, making communication easier for users.
Here’s everything we know about the feature so far.
Bloomberg’s trusted Apple reporter Mark Gurman, citing sources familiar with the matter, recently reported that AirPods will be able to translate a live “in-person conversation” from one language to another. This feature will roll out later this year as part of the iOS 19 update and will work with current AirPods models.
For example, if an English-speaking user is listening to someone speaking in another language, the AirPods’ microphones will pick up the speech, and the iPhone will automatically translate it.
The iPhone will also translate English speech into the other language in real time, enabling smooth back-and-forth communication.
It’s still unclear whether this feature will be limited to the latest AirPods Pro or if older models will also support it. Last year, Apple introduced new hearing health features for the second-generation AirPods Pro with iOS 18, so there’s a possibility the translation feature could be exclusive to newer models.
Other wearables such as Google’s Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Samsung’s Galaxy Buds3 and Buds3 Pro already support similar features.
Bloomberg also reported that iOS 19 will bring a major design update, aiming to make the interface more consistent across iOS, macOS, and visionOS. Apple also plans to “simplify the way users navigate and control their devices.”
Moreover, Apple has been exploring the idea of integrating cameras into future AirPods. These cameras could enable AI-powered features like Visual Intelligence, potentially allowing users to access smart features without taking their iPhone out of their pocket.
However, this technology is still in the early stages of development.
As of now, live translation in AirPods looks set to be one of the standout features of iOS 19, which will make Apple’s wireless earbuds even more useful for travelers and multilingual conversations.
