Apple has announced huge price cuts for top iPhone 15 Pro models in China during its current 618 shopping holiday.
The move drives top-end iPhone pricing below 8,000 CNY for the first time—around £940 or $1,106.
But why is China doing that?
Perhaps due to decreased sales in the country.
The cuts in Apple are rather deep, with the iPhone 15 Pro going for only 6,099 CNY through official channels after the cut.
The larger iPhone 15 Pro Max has been cut by 2,050 CNY (£240/$283) to bring its price down to 7,949 CNY (£935/$1,099).
That represents a significant milestone, given that top-of-the-line iPhones have previously started above the 8,000 CNY threshold in China.
The most expensive iPhone sold in the same period last year was the 8,098 CNY (£950/$1,119) model.
The deep price cut is a very direct response to the sales pressure the company has been facing in the Chinese market.
According to market research firm Counterpoint, Apple’s mobile phone sales in China fell by 19% in the first quarter of this year, causing its market share to drop from first to third position.
Positive results of these price reduction promos have already been noticed, as Apple’s shipments in the Chinese market have increased by a significant 52% in April.
Looks like this big surge in sales indicates that the price reduction strategy may have been successful in rejuvenating consumer demand.
The price cuts have worked to lure customers and enhance sales in the short term, but how this will play out as a marketing strategy in the long term remains to be seen, or if this is merely a desperate attempt by Apple to make up for the dwindling sales in China.
Some industry analysts say that the official pricing of iPhones could drop to the lowest point this year in June, making it the best time to buy an iPhone.
Still, the long-term implications of Apple’s price plan remain unknown.
