Apple fans, get ready for something a little out of the ordinary next week.

The company has been drumming up hype for its upcoming May 7th launch with a twist – promoting it as a “different kind of Apple event.”

As per 9to5Mac, in the build-up to next Monday’s pre-recorded keynote, likely focused on new iPad hardware, Apple’s social media accounts have been running cryptic ads teasing that the company is “drafting up something special for you.”

The ads go on to promise a “different kind of Apple Event” is in store when the virtual festivities kick off at 7am PT.

A Different Apple Event?

Just what could make this particular launch event so unique is anyone’s guess at this point.

The start time of 7am PT is definitely unorthodox for Apple, which typically prefers kicking things off later in the morning around 10am.

And holding a product event in May at all is a rarity for the notoriously tight-lipped company.

Perhaps the biggest hint is the “drafting” reference, which could nod to the heavy presence of iPad software and accessories like the Apple Pencil expected to be showcased.

Maybe Apple has some reimagined input methods or productivity tools cooked up that warrant the “different” label.

Then again, it could be that Apple is simply overplaying its hand a bit with the mysterious marketing.

After all, last year’s October event launched new Macs and iPads in a stripped-down, 30-minute virtual presentation.

Still, the company’s best product launches are the ones that manage to surprise and delight.

So while tempered expectations are wise, there’s an intriguing possibility that Apple has something genuinely fresh and unexpected in store for its first launch event in over half a year.

A redesigned iPad Pro with OLED display and desktop-caliber M4 silicon is practically a given, but maybe there’s more…

The truth will be unveiled when Apple’s “different kind of event” streams live on May 7th at 7am PT.
