In a recent development, Apple has agreed to a $25 million settlement over its Family Sharing feature, and you may be entitled to a share of this amount.
This settlement comes after a lawsuit alleging that Apple misrepresented the capabilities of its Family Sharing feature in the App Store.
This claim is only for people residing in the US.
You qualify as a class member in this lawsuit if you meet the following conditions:
As per reports, eligible individuals would have received an official email detailing these points and providing guidance on the next steps.
If you believe you fall under the eligibility criteria, here’s how you can claim your part of the settlement:
Of the total $25 million settlement fund, $10 million has been allocated for attorneys’ fees.
The remaining $15 million will be distributed among eligible Apple users.
While the exact per-claimant payout is yet to be determined, it’s known that the maximum individual payout is $50.
To be eligible, you must have been part of an Apple Family Sharing group between June 21, 2015, and January 30, 2019, were a U.S. resident during that time, and purchased a third-party app subscription via the App Store.
Claims can be submitted by visiting the Walter Peters vs Apple Inc. settlement website.
You can choose to file your claim online or by mail using the Payment ID and PIN provided in the notification email, or still file a claim if you didn’t receive an email.
The deadline for submitting a claim for the Apple Family Sharing settlement is March 1, 2024.
It’s important to file before this date to be eligible for a payout.
While the exact amount per claimant in the Apple Family Sharing settlement is unknown, the maximum amount an individual can receive is $50.
The settlement results from a lawsuit alleging Apple misrepresented the Family Sharing feature. Eligible claimants are part of a $15 million fund, separate from $10 million allocated for attorneys’ fees.
It’s also worth knowing that when you bring attorney’s fees into the picture, the $25 million sum instantly gets slashed by 40%. This means the total to be split amongst claimants is more like $15 million, with a maximum payout of $50 per person.
You should be eligible for a payout if:
You are a U.S. resident.
You were enrolled in Apple Family Sharing with at least one other person between June 21, 2015 and January 30, 2019.
You purchased a subscription to a third-party app through Apple’s App Store during that time.
Head to the Walter Peters vs Apple Inc. website.
Select if you’d like to submit your claim online or by mail at the top.
If you already received a letter, you can use your PaymentID and PIN, if not, you can still submit a claim.
