In the quest for 5G supremacy in India, two titans—Airtel and Jio—have been going head-to-head.
A recent report from Opensignal, which gathered data between June and August 2023, has given us some intriguing insights into this fierce rivalry.
Airtel has set a high bar in terms of quality, especially for video streaming and mobile gaming experiences.
Scoring an impressive 74.2 points in the 5G Video Experience, Airtel is closely followed by Jio with 72.4 points.
When it comes to Voice App Experience, Airtel continues to edge out Jio, albeit slightly, scoring 82.8 points to Jio’s 81.9.
However, in terms of 5G availability and download speed, Jio takes the crown.
With a 49.1% 5G Availability score, Jio shows significant growth compared to earlier this year.
Additionally, Jio’s download speeds in the 5G category are an astounding 306.3 Mbps, overshadowing Airtel’s 272.7 Mbps.
In an era where video streaming via platforms like Netflix and YouTube has become the norm, both companies are keen to offer unparalleled experiences.
Airtel excels in on-demand and live video experiences, scoring 66.8 points and 66.1 points, respectively.
When it comes to voice app experiences on platforms such as WhatsApp, Skype, and Facebook Messenger, both Airtel and Jio fall in the ‘Good’ category, implying a majority of their users are satisfied with the services.
While Airtel might be pleasing its customer base with superior video and gaming experiences, Jio has been making strides in 5G availability.
The company’s 5G Availability score has seen a significant rise from 32.5% earlier this year to 49.1%.
In contrast, Airtel’s 5G availability has made modest gains, increasing from 11.4% to 16.1%.
In conclusion, the Opensignal report paints a picture of two equally compelling but different narratives.
Airtel excels in offering quality experiences in video and voice applications, while Jio triumphs in terms of speed and 5G network availability.
Airtel has the edge in 5G Video and Voice App Experience, scoring 74.2 in the 5G Video Experience and 82.8 in the 5G Voice App Experience on a 100-point scale.
Jio boasts the fastest average overall download speeds at 52.9 Mbps and has a remarkable 5G Availability score of 49.1%, indicating its users spend nearly half their time on active 5G.
Jio’s 5G Availability increased from 32.5% to 49.1% between December 2022 and August 2023. Airtel’s 5G Availability went up from 11.4% to 16.1% in the same period.
Jio claims the title for the fastest average download speed, clocking in at a swift 52.9 Mbps. It’s nearly double the download speed experienced by Airtel users, which stands at 26.6 Mbps.
