Android XR is just getting started with Samsung’s “Project Moohan” set to launch the platform. Now, we’re getting a first look at the second Android XR headset in the works, XREAL’s “Project Aura.”
Announced during Google I/O 2025, alongside Google’s new partnership with Warby Parker, XREAL revealed it’s developing an Android XR headset that’s designed to be “optical see-through.” This means it blends real-world views with digital overlays, using the company’s experience in making lightweight XR hardware.
There’s still a lot we don’t know about what Aura can do, but it looks relatively compact in early images. It’ll be powered by a Snapdragon XR chipset, which is designed for smooth, lag-free AR performance, including features like spatial tracking and real-time visuals.
XREAL said, “This collaboration also includes Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., bringing together leading innovation across hardware, silicon, and software to build the next wave of XR experiences. Project Aura uses XREAL’s proven track record in lightweight XR hardware, the Android XR software stack, and Qualcomm Technologies’ Snapdragon® XR chipsets optimized for spatial computing.”
“By combining our platform with XREAL’s leadership in portable XR hardware, we’re expanding spatial experiences to OST form-factors that are truly intuitive and accessible, representing a pivotal moment in our ecosystem,” said Hugo Swart, Google’s Senior Director of XR Ecosystem, in a press release.
We’ll get a closer look at Project Aura during the Augmented World Expo, happening June 10–12 in Long Beach, California. As of now, there’s no official release date yet. However, XREAL says more updates will be shared sometime “later this year.”
