WhatsApp is reportedly getting ready to roll out a new usernames feature aimed at improving user privacy. As per a report from trusted WhatsApp Beta source WABetaInfo, the latest WhatsApp beta version 2.25.22.9 for Android includes early tests of a username key option designed to add an additional layer of security.

With this update, WhatsApp might move away from its existing phone number–based system to initiate chats, allowing users to keep their phone numbers private and minimise unwanted messages or spam. Here’s everything we know about this so far.

WhatsApp Username – What to Expect?

According to the WABetaInfo report, the upcoming WhatsApp username system is expected to offer users more privacy and control. Instead of depending solely on phone numbers, every user will be able to create a unique username.

WhatsApp may introduce a username key, a security feature that restricts messaging even if someone knows your username. Essentially, users will have to share their username and matching key (if enabled) before they can receive messages. This extra protection helps safeguard phone numbers and reduces unsolicited contact.

To ensure fair access, WhatsApp is also developing a username reservation feature that will let users secure their preferred usernames before the full rollout. WABetaInfo reveals that this reservation phase is separate from the complete username system, which will eventually enable communication without revealing phone numbers. The reservation step is designed to prevent popular usernames from being claimed too early by a limited number of beta testers.

By introducing username reservations, WhatsApp aims to give everyone an equal chance to claim their desired usernames. The report adds that this reservation system might be made available earlier than the full username functionality, helping WhatsApp manage demand and prevent early testers from monopolising the best usernames.

WhatsApp Username Rollout Timeline

The username reservation phase is crucial because the full usernames rollout will happen gradually. As highlighted in the report, WhatsApp plans to test the feature thoroughly, fix bugs, and ensure it performs reliably under large-scale use.

While an official release date hasn’t been confirmed yet, the reservation option is expected to arrive first and allow users to claim their preferred usernames ahead of time.

This phased approach ensures that more users get a fair opportunity to secure their chosen usernames even before the complete system becomes available.
