WhatsApp is reportedly working on a major visual refresh for its Android app. Fresh Android Beta reports suggest the app is working on introducing custom app icons, themes, and accent colour options. According to a trusted WhatsApp feature tracker, these personalisation tools were spotted in a recent beta build and are expected to be tied to the long-rumoured WhatsApp premium subscription plan. Here’s what we know so far.

As per WABetaInfo, the new visual customisation options were identified in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.6.1. The update was recently rolled out to developers and beta testers. While the feature is still in development and not available to the wider public, it could be introduced in a future version of the app.

The beta version reportedly includes 14 new WhatsApp app icons. Seven of these are single-colour variants including blue, brown, green, monochrome, orange, pink, and purple.

In addition, WhatsApp has added seven special icon styles, which are said to include Aurora, Fluffy, Galaxy, Clay, Sparkle, and Neon.

These new icons are expected to allow users to customise how WhatsApp appears on their home screen and inside the app drawer, offering a more personalised Android experience.

New Accent Colours and Classic Theme May Return

Beyond icons, WhatsApp is also said to be developing a feature that lets users modify the app’s branding colour. Reports suggest users will be able to choose from 19 different colour options. These include the default green, along with royal blue, violet, coral, teal, brown, beige, yellow, pink, red, orange, and dark olive green, among others.

In addition to these modern colour choices, WhatsApp is reportedly planning to reintroduce the app’s classic look. This move could appeal to long-time users who prefer the older visual style.

According to WABetaInfo, these changes would affect multiple elements within the app including filters, tabs, floating action buttons, and other interface components. The goal is to provide users with greater control over the overall appearance of WhatsApp, enabling deeper personalisation.

Premium Subscription May Unlock Visual Features

The feature tracker suggests that these customisation tools could be exclusive to WhatsApp’s upcoming premium subscription. The Meta-owned messaging platform is reportedly developing a new subscription model that may be available via a monthly plan.

As with most beta features, the rollout is expected to happen in phases. This means even after launch, the new themes and icons may not be immediately accessible to all users.
