WhatsApp is experimenting with a new feature designed to bring more clarity to crowded group chats. The platform is currently testing personalised group-member tags on Android, giving users the ability to display short labels next to their names. The feature is only available to a limited number of beta testers for now. However, the addition could soon become a practical tool for communities, teams, and large social groups. Here’s what we know so far.

The feature was first spotted by WABetaInfo in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.17.42. As per the report, users can assign tags of up to 30 characters to themselves within a specific group. These labels can indicate roles, responsibilities, or even fun identifiers. For example, “Coach”, “Moderator”, or “Project Manager”.

Unlike usernames or admin-assigned titles, these tags are fully optional and managed individually by each member. The intention is to add useful context without introducing any hierarchy. Whether someone is part of a workplace chat, a sports team, or a local neighbourhood group, they can choose exactly how they want to be represented.

WABetaInfo notes that users can create, modify, or delete their tags at any time. Tags cannot include checkmarks, links, or special symbols. This limitation appears to be in place to reduce the chances of impersonation or clutter. Each tag is also restricted to the group where it was created, meaning your label in one chat will not automatically appear in another.

However, tags will sync across devices as long as you sign in with the same WhatsApp account, even after switching phones or reinstalling the app.

At this stage, the feature remains exclusive to beta testers. A wider rollout is expected once WhatsApp completes its testing and ensures reliable syncing across devices.

How to Create Your Member Tag?

Setting a tag is simple and doesn’t require admin permissions.

Open WhatsApp on your Android device, head to the group where you want to add the tag, and go to the Group Info page. Tap your name in the member list, and you’ll find an option to add or edit your tag. Enter a label like “Designer”, “Captain”, or “Foodie”, save it, and it will instantly appear beside your name for everyone in that group.

WhatsApp has been steadily working on improving group interactions through features like Communities, new admin controls, and better organisation tools. It is clear that the platform aims to make large chats less chaotic and more personalised with the addition of member tags in group chats.
