Vodafone Idea (Vi) has received a major financial boost after the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) waived bank guarantee (BG) requirements for spectrum auctions held in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2021.
The waiver announced last week frees Vi from providing BGs worth ₹24,800 crore.
This move is part of a broader relief package for the telecom sector and is expected to help operators allocate resources more effectively toward network expansion.
The DoT informed private telecom operators Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vi about waiving BGs totalling ₹33,000 crore on December 27. Vodafone Idea is the most indebted of the three and has received the largest share of relief.
In an official statement, Vi welcomed the decision saying, “This step of BG waiver is a clear indication of the government’s continued support to the telecom industry. It will ensure that the exposure of the banking system is utilized by telecom operators towards further proliferation of 4G and 5G networks in India.”
Before this change, Vodafone Idea had to provide BGs worth ₹24,800 crore to cover spectrum 0instalments. The waiver eliminates this requirement for auctions held in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2021.
However, the company acknowledged a one-time partial shortfall related to the 2015 auction, stating, “We are in discussion with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to determine the final amount of this partial shortfall for the 2015 auction.”
This relief is especially significant for Vodafone Idea, which has yet to roll out its 5G services. With reduced financial pressure, the company can redirect resources to expand its 4G network and expedite its 5G deployment. The waiver also improves its credit outlook making it easier to secure funding from lenders.
Competing with larger players like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel remains a challenge for Vi. However, this change marks a step forward in its efforts to strengthen its position in India’s telecom market.
