There is new buzz surrounding the Samsung 200MP camera sensor, which was introduced last year and has since been adopted in various smartphones, including the flagship Galaxy S23 Ultra.
It would appear that Samsung has claimed the potential use of these 200MP sensors beyond just primary camera roles.
Originally, smartphones incorporated the 200MP sensors predominantly as their primary camera.
However, Samsung’s recent announcements suggest a paradigm shift. They’ve introduced the prospect of their esteemed 200MP sensors, specifically the ISOCELL HP2 and ISOCELL HP3, being utilised as telephoto cameras.
This move is projected to redefine zoom capabilities, promising more depth and clarity in shots.
Samsung has devised two innovative ways for integrating the 200MP sensor into the telephoto camera: through an in-sensor crop and coupling it with a dedicated optical zoom lens.
This is particularly transformative for slender smartphones or those in a moderate price range, such as the HONOR 90.
By equipping these devices with a 200MP primary camera, they can also harness the in-sensor crop mechanism, delivering an impeccable 4x optical zoom-like image quality straight from the primary lens.
Samsung’s vision for their 200MP sensor is clear, especially when considering the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
Even with its limited telephoto camera zoom range in comparison to the robust 10x periscope zoom, the integration of the 200MP sensor ensures lossless zoom ranges from 3x to 6x to 12x, thereby capturing diverse scenarios without compromising on resolution.
While Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max offers a commendable 5x folded optics zoom, and companies like Oppo have matched with 50MP cameras for main, ultrawide, and zoom perspectives, Samsung’s proposition of a 200MP telephoto camera promises to overshadow competitors.
Speculations are rife about the deployment timeframe of Samsung’s ultra-high-resolution telephoto zoom camera sensor, especially after the company’s historical trend of introducing novel camera tech or sensors in devices shortly after their announcement.
It’s highly anticipated that phones by brands such as Xiaomi or BBK (Vivo, Oppo, OnePlus) might act as test platforms.
With the possibility of a Galaxy S24 Ultra equipped with both a 200MP primary and 200MP telephoto camera, Samsung stands to set unprecedented standards in smartphone photography.

Samsung’s 200MP sensor has largely been adopted as a primary camera in various smartphones, including the flagship Galaxy S23 Ultra.
Samsung has highlighted two methods: the in-sensor crop mechanism and in combination with a dedicated optical zoom lens.
Devices such as the HONOR 90 can utilise the 200MP sensor as a primary camera and leverage the in-sensor crop mechanism to provide up to 4x optical zoom-like image quality directly from the primary camera.
While unconfirmed, there’s anticipation around the potential of a Galaxy S24 Ultra that might be equipped with both a 200MP primary and 200MP telephoto camera, setting new standards in smartphone photography.
