Qualcomm is a well-known name in the smartphone industry with its chips powering the lineups of most reliable smartphone manufacturers.
The chipmaker is now slowly and steadily working towards finding its footing in the automotive sector as well.
At the Snapdragon Summit recently Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon Cockpit Elite and Snapdragon Ride Elite platforms as its entry into the auto business. Certain reports now confirm that the company is in talks with India’s biggest carmaker Maruti for a partnership.
According to reliable tech source Yogesh Brar in association with Smartprix, Qualcomm will work with Maruti Suzuki to incorporate Snapdragon automotive chips into Maruti’s upcoming vehicles.
Indian consumers are increasingly interested in smart cars featuring advanced infotainment, parking assistance and driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Qualcomm surely sees this as a prime opportunity to expand its automotive presence in India.
A partnership with Maruti wouldn’t be the first Qualcomm outing with Indian automakers.
This will join the list of existing collaborations with other leading Indian automakers including Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors.
Specific details of the Maruti-Qualcomm partnership remain undisclosed as of now. However, certain reports suggest that Qualcomm will offer ADAS and infotainment solutions, similar to those in its partnerships with other brands.
Qualcomm’s recently introduced Snapdragon Digital Chassis system includes the Cockpit Elite and Ride Elite platforms, both of which run on the powerful Oryon CPU, Adreno GPU and Hexagon NPU.
These high-performance processors enable the system to handle up to 40 multimodal sensors such as radars, LiDARs, cameras and fingerprint sensors, enhancing safety features and autonomous driving capabilities in vehicles.
The Snapdragon Digital Chassis offers flexible features that can be scaled from safety-focused Level 3 autonomous driving to multi-display infotainment for both ICE and electric vehicles.
This technology is already seen in vehicles like the Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Curvv, and it’s set to power upcoming EV models like the XEV 9e and BE 6e.
Given Qualcomm’s experience in providing infotainment solutions to Tata Motors for the Curvv EV, it is likely Maruti will adopt a similar approach for its anticipated e Vitara EV, set to launch next year. More details are expected as the partnership unfolds.
