Google will reportedly introduce a major hardware and design change with the upcoming Pixel Watch 4. When early renders of the watch surfaced, many noticed the absence of charging contacts near the health sensors. This led to speculation and hope that wireless charging might be making a return, similar to the original Pixel Watch.
However, as reported by Android Headlines, the Pixel Watch 4 will debut an entirely new charger design for the series. Here’s what we know.
According to the latest report, the most notable shift in the Pixel Watch 4 would be shifting the charging connectors from the back of the watch to its left side, along with a new, non-wireless charger.
The Pixel Watch 4 will be charged by placing it sideways into its charging dock. Previous leaks revealed the presence of a speaker and a docking mechanism on the side opposite the crown. With this, it’s now assumed that the charger connects to the two slots next to the speaker to deliver power to the watch.
On earlier Pixel Watch models, the charging connectors were located on the back.
The leaked image of the Pixel Watch 4, however, shows no such contact points on the rear. This initially sparked speculation about a possible wireless charging. But it turns out Google has opted for a more straightforward solution by moving the connectors to the side.
One added benefit of this design change is that it allows users to view the watch face while it’s charging on a bedside table. Additionally, the Pixel Watch 4 is reportedly capable of charging 25% faster than its predecessor.
This redesigned charging system is the latest among several leaks about Google’s next smartwatch. It’s already confirmed that the Pixel Watch 4 will come in 41mm and 45mm sizes, feature displays with brightness up to 3000 nits, and be powered by the same chipset as the Pixel Watch 3. As for pricing, the 41mm variant is expected to start at €399, while the 45mm version may cost €449.
The Pixel Watch 4 is scheduled to launch alongside the Pixel 10 series.
