OnePlus has been sharing exciting details about its upcoming flagship the OnePlus 13 with the global launch set for January 7. The recently disclosed updates include a fresh take on vegan leather and an innovative twist on the flat display design.

In an interview with Android Central, the Head of OnePlus’s Industrial Design Center Ryan Ruan revealed that the OnePlus 13 focuses on delivering the best in-hand feel. The device’s backplate is available in multiple finishes including a “Microfiber Vegan Leather” featured on the “Midnight Blue” variant.

Ruan describes the new material as offering “a natural leather-like grip without compromising on style or sustainability.” Unlike the more rigid feel of other vegan leathers, this microfiber version is softer, durable and wireless charging-friendly.

“A lot of other leather-backed phones normally sacrifice the in-hand comfort just to guarantee daily durability. In the end, the leather may feel sort of plasticky (with a very rough texture). However, on the OnePlus 13, the microfiber vegan leather material is something we worked on for over a year; it guarantees good durability and more importantly, feels soft in your hand,” Ruan revealed during an exclusive chat with Harish Jonnalagadda.

OnePlus 13 features a micro-curve display with four edges.

The OnePlus 13 introduces a flat display that’s not entirely flat. Ruan explained that the screen features a “micro-curve” along all four edges.

This design enhances comfort by eliminating sharp edges and improves durability as curved glass provides better drop resistance.

The display is protected by a custom “Ceramic Guard” glass reinforced with nano-crystalline material. According to OnePlus, this makes the glass twice as drop-resistant as standard Gorilla Glass.

Another interesting design element is the phone’s 50/50 weight distribution. OnePlus claims the device is perfectly balanced, so it won’t tip over when rested on a finger at the centre logo.

“If you place your finger right under the OnePlus logo and support the phone, you’ll find the phone doesn’t lean towards one way or the other. That’s because we introduce an evenly split weight distribution. It requires our engineers to figure out a way to allocate more components in the lower half of the phone to balance the weight,” Ruan said.

Other notable features include:

  • Durability: The OnePlus 13 boasts both IP68 and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance.
  • Battery: A massive 6,000mAh silicon battery powers the device.

With every new detail, the OnePlus 13 seems to be well-prepared to deliver a flagship experience that’s as stylish as it is practical.

Report: Zero-Bezel iPhone Is Delayed, Unlikely To Arrive Before 2027

0

Highlights

  • Apple’s goal of releasing a zero-bezel iPhone has been delayed.
  • The report reveals it is unlikely to be ready before 2027 despite collaboration with Samsung and LG.
  • Apple aims for an iPhone that looks like a “single slab of glass” with no visible bezels.
  • The company is facing challenges such as seamless join, connectivity and protecting screen edges.

Apple has been constantly working to offer technical advancements in almost every department of its product ranges. The zero-bezel iPhone is one such area where the company has been reportedly working for a while. But if the latest reports are of any indication, the dream of a truly bezel-less iPhone is still far

Apple has reportedly been collaborating with Samsung Display and LG Display to create a zero-bezel iPhone screen, but a new report suggests the technology needed is nowhere near ready for mass production.

Apple initially aimed to release a zero-bezel iPhone in 2025 or 2026. However, a recent report from Korea indicates that even 2026 now seems highly unlikely.

An industry insider was quoted in the report saying, “If Apple wants to launch a zero-bezel OLED iPhone in 2026, we should have already finished technical discussions with domestic panel companies, but we are still discussing it.”

The report further states, “At the request of Apple, it is known that Samsung Display and LG Display are developing an iPhone organic light-emitting diode (OLED) without a bezel, but […] the release of the zero-bezel OLED iPhone is currently uncertain in 2026 because there is not enough technology development to eliminate all the bezels.”

Apple’s Plan For A “Single Slab of Glass”

Apple’s design goal has long been to create an iPhone that looks like a “single slab of glass.” The concept was an idea of Former Apple design chief Jony Ive. The idea is for the entire front of the phone to be a seamless display with no visible bezels and the screen flowing smoothly into the edges.

image
The “quad micro curve” approach is similar to what we have seen in the current Apple Watch’s screen. (Image credit – Apple)

The design would likely use a flat screen with a slight curve at the edges, a “quad micro curve” approach. This design has been seen in some Chinese smartphones and is similar to the Apple Watch’s screen, which hides bezels beneath the curved glass.

However, Apple wants the display to remain fully functional in the curved areas without distortion.

While the concept is feasible in theory, a recent 9to5Mac report highlights the several challenges in making it practical for everyday use. These challenges include –

  • Ensuring a seamless join between the curved display and the phone’s body.
  • Avoiding the “magnifying glass effect” seen with curved display edges.
  • Maintaining effective connectivity despite the design.
  • Protecting the vulnerable screen edges from impact damage.

The Elec report also highlights, “ In order for Samsung Display and LG Display to implement zero bezel as requested by Apple, they must develop thin film encapsulation (TFE) technology to protect OLED from moisture and oxygen, and optical clear adhesive (OCA) technology used when bonding with a transparent double-sided adhesive film, tailored to the curved side of the display, and secure space for antennas, etc.

“Among various technologies, it is known that the acquisition of OCA technology is particularly slow. This is because the side view distortion problem has not been completely resolved after the OCA process. Another issue that needs to be resolved is the problem of the display easily breaking due to external impact when designed to flow down the side of the product.”

Moreover, embedding the front-facing camera beneath the display is still not up to Apple’s quality standards. Reports suggest that the 2026 iPhone would likely still feature a punch-hole camera with under-display camera technology being a longer-term goal.

Apple’s journey toward a zero-bezel design started with the iPhone X in 2017, which significantly reduced bezels compared to earlier models. The company since then has shrunk bezel sizes gradually but they remain visible.

image
Samsung have pulled no size bezels in Galaxy Edge 7 but the smartphone does come with a huge forehead and chin. (Image credit – Samsung)

Meanwhile, Samsung’s Galaxy Edge series introduced curved displays with minimal side bezels, but they retained larger forehead and chin areas. Apple, however, aims to extend this edge-to-edge design to all four sides of the phone.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced new pro-consumer regulations under the Telecom Consumers Protection (Twelfth Amendment) Regulations 2024.

These changes include a directive for telecom operators to offer tariff plans that provide only voice call and SMS benefits.

“The (TRAI) is of the view that a separate Special Tariff Voucher (STV) for Voice and SMS in addition to existing Data only STV and bundled offers shall be mandated. It is also observed that mandating Voice and SMS-only STV and bundled offers shall be mandated,” read the Notification.

This initiative is expected to help approximately 150 million 2G users and those who maintain a second SIM exclusively for calls and SMS.

Users can avoid paying for data they don’t need with call-and-SMS-only plans. 2G users currently often have to buy expensive plans with unnecessary data benefits.

The mandate could impact operators that still provide 2G services such as Airtel and Vi. In contrast, Jio operates exclusively on 4G and 5G networks.

Telecom operators have traditionally focused on bundled plans that include data, calls, SMS and even OTT benefits to boost their Average Revenue Per User (ARPU).

However, TRAI’s new regulations prioritise consumer affordability and choice.

TRAI stated that these changes were developed after considering consumer surveys and feedback from stakeholders ensuring that users can maximise the value of their telecom expenses.

In addition to the call-and-SMS-only plans, TRAI has mandated the following –

  • Extended Validity for Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs): Telcos must increase the validity of STVs from 90 days to up to 365 days. These vouchers are often more affordable than regular plans and offer a range of benefits.
  • Affordable Top-Up Vouchers: Operators are required to introduce top-up vouchers in various denominations starting as low as Rs 10 making recharges more accessible to users.

realme 14 Pro Series 5G to feature 42° quad-curved display.

realme, today announced that the upcoming realme 14 Pro Series 5G would feature a quad-curved display.

This new display will set a new benchmark in smartphone design and functionality in the upcoming realme 14 Pro Series 5G, offering an unparalleled user experience that outshines both flat and dual-curved screens while addressing key user needs with innovative features.

The first-in-its segment quad-curved display features a precise 42-degree golden curvature on all four sides creating an aesthetic that’s both visually striking and ergonomically sound.

It is combined with AI anti-mis-touching technology that reduces mis-touch incidents by 25 percent, making it perfect for gaming enthusiasts.

Boasting India’s narrowest bezels in the price segment, measuring just 1.6mm on all four sides, the upcoming realme 14 Pro Series 5G ensures a highly immersive visual experience, ideal for media consumption. Leading the display innovation, the quad-curved display of the upcoming realme 14 Pro Series 5G offers three significant advantages over a flat display.

Firstly, the design enhances the overall feel of the device, making it appear lighter and thinner while providing a smoother touch experience and ensures effortless swiping from the top, bottom, and edges towards the screen’s center.

Secondly, the symmetrical design of the front and back not only elevates the device’s aesthetics but also ensures a comfortable grip, whether held horizontally or vertically.

Lastly, the quad-curved display creates a visually slimmer profile, further adding to the device’s sleek and modern appeal.

Even in comparison to the dual-curved screens, the quad-curved display comes out as a winner, offering narrower bezels for superior visual immersion, precise color accuracy without edge distortions, and a lower rate of accidental touches, ensuring seamless usability.

Currently featured in the mid-to-high-end models, the four equal-width sides are an exclusive hallmark of flagship devices, further elevating their premium appeal. This innovation reflects a commitment to delivering cutting-edge technology that enhances both functionality and user satisfaction.

The realme 14 Pro 5G’s display technology marks a significant step forward in smartphone innovation with the implementation of cutting-edge FIAA technology, which is typically reserved for flagship devices.

It ensures superior color accuracy at the edges and optimizes space by routine wires within the AA area, effectively eliminating the black border as seen in traditional curved displays.

Furthermore, with the realme 14 Pro Series 5G, we have also tackled the increased complexity of module lamination, addressing challenges such as lamination rebound bubbles, reliability wrinkles, and screen delimitation through customized lamination fixtures and optimized processes, supported by large-scale simulation modeling.

Samsung is reportedly cutting down its plans for 2025 foldable devices after the performance of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 didn’t meet expectations. A report from Korea suggests the company is rethinking its approach as sales for its latest foldables failed to meet expectations.

Samsung has been slowly increasing production with every new launch since the first Samsung foldable phone came out.

While this was a perfect strategy for some time, competition from other brands has now made it difficult for the brand to sell as many units as it hoped. The sale numbers of Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 appear to have compelled the company to finally take the call.

A report from ETNews via @Jukanlosreve on X (formerly Twitter) claims Samsung plans to produce just 5 million units of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 combined, 3 million for the Flip and 2 million for the Fold. That’s a sharp drop from the 8.2 million units produced for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6.

Samsung had initially aimed for 10% growth with its latest foldable generation, but the numbers didn’t come close. Pre-orders were lower than expected and overall sales underperformed. While the report doesn’t provide exact figures, it’s clear this shortfall is why Samsung has decided to change the strategy.

As highlighted in earlier reports, Samsung depends heavily on existing foldable users upgrading to newer models. The low pre-order numbers for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 likely set the stage for a challenging year.

Samsung isn’t the only brand changing its production plans for foldable phones. According to analyst Ross Young, several Chinese foldable manufacturers are also cutting down their production forecasts for 2025.

The latest reports also suggest that Samsung is exploring new form factors for foldable devices, which means we might get to see something completely new in the foldable category.

While Samsung trims its foldable production, it’s ramping up efforts for the Galaxy S series. The company plans a production run of 37.4 million units for the Galaxy S25 series, an increase of around 7% compared to the Galaxy S24 series. Additionally, the upcoming Galaxy S25 Slim is expected to add another 3 million units to that total.

Jukanlosreve writes, “In contrast, the Galaxy S25 series is expected to see a 7% increase in shipments compared to its predecessor. The target shipment volume for the Galaxy S25 series, scheduled for release in the first half of next year, is set at 37.4 million units. Including the new addition to the lineup, the Galaxy S25 Slim (3 million units), the total target shipment volume reaches 40.4 million units.”
