Nothing’s First AI Device Will Have No Screen, Launching in December

Highlights

  • Nothing will launch its first AI-native device in December 2026 as CEO Carl Pei positions it as a productivity focused product aimed at professionals and knowledge workers rather than mainstream consumers.
  • It will feature a screenless design but Nothing has not yet revealed how users will interact with it.
  • Most details including AI features, hardware specifications, pricing, availability and launch date remain undisclosed.

Nothing CEO Carl Pei has confirmed that the company will launch its first AI-native device in December 2026. The upcoming device will be different from conventional AI hardware and come with a screenless design and a focus on productivity rather than everyday use. In an essay published on X and titled “Toolmakers”, Pei explained why he believes the current race to build consumer focused AI hardware is premature.

Nothing’s First AI Device to Launch in December

Nothing CEO Carl Pei has announced that the company’s first AI-native device will arrive next month i.e. December 2026. However, Nothing has not revealed an exact launch date yet.

Nothing has also shared a teaser image carrying the brand mark ‘NOTHING (R)’ and the words ‘COMING SOON’. It shows a matte dark exterior with rounded corners and offers an early look at the design of the upcoming product. However, the image does not reveal the device’s complete form factor or its specifications.

Pei discussed the current state of AI hardware and the company’s approach to developing its first AI device.

Pei believes the industry is moving too quickly towards mass market AI hardware including wearable pins, pendants and smart glasses. According to Pei, the technology needs to establish a clear purpose and product market fit before it can become a mainstream consumer product.

While Nothing has confirmed the December launch timeline, the company has yet to announce the exact date or share a complete list of product specifications.

Nothing’s First AI Device Will Have No Screen

One of the most interesting details about Nothing’s upcoming AI device is that it will not feature a new display screen. This suggests that the company is exploring a different way for users to interact with AI instead of relying on a conventional smartphone-like interface.

However, Nothing has not confirmed how users will interact with the device. Details about possible voice controls, physical buttons or other interaction methods remain unknown.

Pei also highlighted what he calls the “context gap” in modern AI systems. According to him, the biggest limitation of current AI models is not necessarily their intelligence but their lack of awareness of a user’s real-world situation.

Nothing’s device could aim to address this limitation by making it easier for AI to access relevant context. However, the company has not confirmed exactly how this functionality will work.

Pei also discussed the importance of industrial design in his essay on X. He criticised the conventional appearance of office hardware and argued that productivity focused tools should also have thoughtful designs. He referenced the 1969 Olivetti Valentine typewriter designed by Ettore Sottsass as an example of how functional products can also have distinctive aesthetics.

Nothing’s AI Device: What to Expect

Carl Pei believes that AI hardware should first solve practical problems for professionals and knowledge workers particularly in areas such as coding, IT infrastructure, legal work and customer support.

Nothing’s first AI-native device will not focus on a screen-based experience and appears to a dedicated hardware to make AI more useful for productivity tasks. The screenless design and integration with Nothing’s existing ecosystem are among the few confirmed details so far. However, AI capabilities, interaction methods, hardware specifications and pricing remain unknown.

More details about the device’s pricing, availability and compatibility with existing Nothing products are expected to emerge closer to the launch.
