We have been getting a lot of reports on the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro series for a long time now and some of them have hinted at a possible design change. Certain earlier reports suggest that there is a chance Apple may be planning to change the current square-shaped camera module to a rectangular one. A chassis image leaked previously from the supply chain even revealed the likely design looking quite similar to the Pixel-like camera.
However, it appears we have to manage expectations and don’t expect significant changes to its camera setup. New reports suggest that while the back will feature a new rectangular camera bump, the internal hardware will most likely stay the same as the iPhone 16 Pro series.
Here’s what we know from the recent tip.
According to a leak by reliable tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS) on Weibo, the iPhone 17 Pro will retain its predecessor’s triple-lens rear camera system. It will include –
The leak also revealed that the lenses will continue using GP lens technology, a combination of glass and plastic elements.
There may be an upgrade to the selfie camera, which is expected to jump from 12MP to 24MP and offer better quality for front-facing photos and videos.
If the latest word of DCS is true, Apple seems to be sticking to its tradition of keeping major camera upgrades for long periods. The iPhone 16 Pro lineup introduced several hardware enhancements including a new 48MP fusion camera, an updated ultrawide lens and a dedicated camera control button.
And these improvements are likely being carried forward into the iPhone 17 Pro.
While hardware changes might be minimal, there’s speculation that Apple could focus on refining software-based photography features in its next release.
